About this project
The rubbish chair is a one-of-a-kind refurbished antique chair, coated with a thick layer of rubber. These chairs function beautifully in a natural setting and serve as a sculptural piece of history, brought to life by vibrant colors and a new purpose. Each piece is unique in style and color, and made to withstand even the most extreme weather conditions.
I wanted to create an attractive piece of indoor/outdoor furniture, while eliminating waste and preserving the designs and craftsmanship of past furniture makers. After experimenting with different coatings and outdoor upholstery, I decided to coat a chair in rubber and was very pleased with my results.
With your help, I can put these chairs into production. I have developed an efficient and cost-effective process of coating chairs, making it possible for me to offer them at a reasonable price. I am raising funds to set up a zero-waste wood shop and to broaden my search area for the best quality furniture available. I would also like to introduce more colors and switch to a recycled rubber product.
The chairs are meticulously cleaned and covered in a soft rubber coating that resists moisture, fading, acids, abrasion, slipping/skidding and provides a comfortable, controlled grip. The protective coating remains flexible and will not become brittle or crack in extreme weather conditions; -30°F to 200°F. The chairs will be available in many variations of red, blue, yellow, white, green, orange, purple, and pink.
Your Support and Rewards
Please chip in to help me get this project off the ground. As a reward for your support I am offering the rubbish chair for a special price during the kickstarter campaign. I've worked up a few packages, which are listed in the rewards section. Each unique piece will be signed and numbered. *Depending on the initial condition of the chair, some of the upholstered chairs may be available at the lower price point.
Also available are the rubbish camera. The rubbish camera is a vintage film or video camera dipped in rubber. I will use a variety of quality vintage cameras with interesting and unique details. The cameras used are in slight disrepair and would likely never be restored. These one-of-a-kind pieces will be available only during the kickstarter campaign.
Shipping is included within the United States. Please contribute an additional $100 per chair for international shipping.
If my project is successfully funded, I will set up shop and start gathering materials. As the chairs are completed, backers will be able to select the one they want. Since I will be experimenting with new colors as I go, you should expect to see some pretty amazing variations, from soft greens to vibrant fluorescent purple. I will do my best to accommodate your color and style preferences. Immediately after the kickstarter campaign, the chairs will be available on etsy and at the Portland Saturday Market.
Below is a chart that will give you an idea of what kinds of chairs will be available. Some of the styles I collect are Jacobean, Queen Anne, Georgian, Chippendale, Louis XV, Hepplewhite, R & J Adam, L'Art Nouveau and Scotch New Art.
In the future, I would like to offer custom pieces and custom color options. I will experiment with coating tables, sofas, and light fixtures as well. I am currently developing a website. Until then, the chairs will be available at etsy.com
