Reasons to Smile: Special Stories is a series of books that contain short stories and photos from around the globe, which aims to bring awareness and acceptance to people living with special needs.
Our first book is titled Reasons to Smile: Celebrating People Living with Down Syndrome, and it will be available January 2016.
About the first book
Each story in Reasons to Smile: Celebrating People Living with Down Syndrome is around 500 words and is about a person living with Down syndrome. The stories are real, submitted by people from around the world, including the U.S, England, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, and Australia, and they are intended to uplift the reader and leave them feeling empowered. By including stories from around the world, we become connected and stronger through our shared experiences.
Details about the book
A photograph accompanies each story. The hardback book is 7" x 7", and it will be published by Schiffer Publishing in 2016.
Elizabeth Martins & Andrea Knauss, co-editors of the book, live in Philadelphia, PA. Andrea works in the counseling field, Elizabeth works in publishing, and Anna (who inspired the book) is a fashionista who enjoys performance arts. The foreword of the book was written by Keith Harris, father of Tim Harris—owner of Tim's Place, the first restaurant in the US owned by a person with Down syndrome.
Our goal is to create more books in this series, which focus on celebrating people living with other special needs. At this time, we only have the one book, but we would like to create more that address other needs such as autism, living with disabilities, and living with other special needs.
How you can help
We are looking for funds in order to create a website, so we can continue sharing stories beyond the printed word and to have a home where we can house these books and feature stories.
Where the money will go
It will take about $4,000 to create a website and maintain it for the first few years. And $1,000 will be used to purchase books and distribute them as gifts to our donors.
We think Reasons to Smile: Special Stories could be a great project for these reasons:
• Community Reasons to Smile: Special Stories is intended to create community, bringing forth stories that will make readers smile and leave them feeling encouraged.
• Awareness Reasons to Smile: Special Stories brings up issues that need to be addressed. Together, through the power of the written word, we can make this world a better place for individuals living with special needs.
• Encouragement Reasons to Smile: Special Stories delivers inspiring and encouraging messages, letting other know they are not alone.
We truly appreciate your support of this project!
Risks and challenges
Some of the risks and challenges involved with this project may include delays at the printer, technical issues as we build a website, and funds in order to keep us on track. But we are encouraged to remain positive. We feel it is a necessary project and we hope it helps others.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
