Maestros of the Anthymn is an episodic fantasy adventure game. You play as Tiarnen Strathtone, a maestro who journeys across the continent of Chora while using his music in hopes of ending a brutal, centuries-long civil war. With tone, chord, melody and song at Tiarnen’s command, players travel throughout Chora’s seven provinces whilst fighting ruthless enemy maestros. Each province has their own individual musical genre and culture. Against insurmountable odds, Tiarnen must compel his adversaries to compose Chora’s first National Anthymn and unite the provinces forever.
A MAESTRO YOU WILL BECOME
Let us be clear, you do not need to be a musician in any way to play Maestros of the Anthymn. The game is a heightened musical and sound based experience. It is not a test of one’s musical abilities.
We are all gamers first at String Theory but with an obsession for all things music. We have designed Maestros of the Anthymn to be an approachable, understandable and exciting game for anyone interested in playing an episodic RPG. However, after spending so much time in Chora we certainly have a much deeper understanding of music. We’re hoping the same will happen for you!
A REALM OF SONG, SWORD AND SORCERY
When music becomes the heart of your game, many of the classic mechanics and features we’ve come to love in our favorite RPGs are enhanced and refreshed. Rhythm suddenly empowers combat, environments amplify your abilities and the storyline resonates with characters and relationships you care about.
You have never seen or heard a world like this before.
Like the continent of Chora itself, the music in Maestros of the Anthymn is based on a wide range of musical styles – from classical, rock, orchestral, tribal, dance, folk, metal and celtic styles. Gamers of any age will discover and appreciate the many musical secrets of each province and use music-based gameplay to battle NPC creatures, monsters and maestros. As the powerful Maestro Tiarnen, players will craft their own unique war songs, much like combos, to unleash lethal sonic maelstroms in combat against them.
DISCOVERING A HIDDEN POWER
While defending his home province of Venefica against Maestro Lydia, Tiarnen discovers a deeper connection to music called harmony. This realization completely transforms him as he now understands that the maestros can unite the provinces together in song, an Anthymn, and end the war peacefully.
As Maestro Tiarnen, you will:
• Wield music’s hidden power. Maestros have the unique ability to illuminate music into shards of stained glass. Though these elegant arrangements are a woven artistry unto themselves, they are foremost a weapon against other maestros in battle.
• Create Custom Combos. You will craft attack, healing and defense combos to use in battle. Combos can be created in game or, if we reach our stretch goal, on our tablet companion app!
• Explore the provinces of Chora. Across the vast continent of Chora are seven unique provinces, each with their own musical genre and style. No matter if you’re a fan of rock, classical, tribal or electronic music; you’ll be able to explore a deep and rich culture inspired by each of them.
• Amplify the Audioscape. By wielding your powerful combos in specific locations throughout the provinces, hidden layers in the soundtrack and audioscape will come to life creating a richer emotional experience while amplifying your abilities.
• Compose the Anthymn. While you journey across the far reaches of Chora you will gain insight and rare musical knowledge from each province allowing you to help compose your part in the Anthymn and end the war.
• Engage in a Deep Storyline. The characters and relationships in our story have been a long time in the making. Every part of the narrative has been carefully crafted so you not only care about the challenges Tiarnen has to face but the difficult choices you alone must make to ensure the Anthymn is completed.
Much like an episode of television, Maestros of the Anthymn uses episodic story structure to shape an engaging gameplay experience. If our launch episode is successful, we will continue with three more episodes completing season one. We currently have five seasons written.
Once the launch episode is complete we will be submitting to Steam immediately for green light, if the community supports Maestros of the Anthymn we’re hoping for a long road ahead with many more episodes to come!
WHAT WILL THE LAUNCH EPISODE BE LIKE?
Our Kickstarter campaign is for our launch episode specifically. The story will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete with an additional 2-3 hours of replay for exploration, side quests and puzzles.
An episode is made up of approximately 7 chapters, most are sandbox gameplay while others are narrative cinematics. The gameplay chapters have enormous replay value with a deep loot and item system to better customize Tiarnen’s stats, wardrobe, instrument and combos based on your own personal preferences.

In 2014 we were extremely fortunate to be accepted by the Canada Media Fund's Experimental Stream. This program supports innovation in the Canadian video game development allowing us to begin work on a prototype for Maestros of the Anthymn. Though we are extremely grateful to receive this level of support it is nowhere near enough funding to launch production and achieve our full vision for the game.

As the campaign moves forward we’ll be listening to any and all requests for additional add-ons and update the list with those we feel are achievable.
Our stretch goals have been designed to not only allow us to create the mobile companion app but also continue producing each episode in series and complete our first season!
Risks and challenges
Maestros of the Anthymn is currently in the middle of it’s development cycle and we’re now on Kickstarter looking to crowdsource production financing for our first episode.
Though we have already taken substantial risk this past year to innovate our gameplay and audioscape design it has proven to be incredibly worth while. We will always continue to push the envelope, it’s who we are, but not without proven strategies in place to help ensure we remain successful throughout production.
Building with Unity 3D. The Unity engine is an absolute work horse and is not only well supported but also has thousands of developers and millions of players using it every day. Chances are you’ve already played many games at home or via a mobile device which were built on Unity. This allows us to stand on a proven and affordable platform while integrating MotA’s unique features while mitigating risk.
Minimize Studio footprint. The core String Theory team is small and we intend to keep it that way. Though we are hiring for production our intent is to remain as lean as possible. In terms of recruiting, the challenge is finding new team members who have a strong duality in music and game knowledge.
Strong Production Management. The 200k ask for our campaign is what it will cost this team to produce the launch episode we truly want you to experience. If the campaign is successful, we have a proven production team who knows how to financially ensure we launch under almost any circumstance.
Stretch Goals. As you can see from the outline above we’re matching each episode in terms of budget. Though MotA is an episodic, many of our assets will be used throughout the season allowing us to amortize not only the development funding already spent but increase the value in the episodes ahead!
This team is incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to produce in such a short time and limited budget. If our campaign is successful we can not wait show you what we’re capable of in 2015.
