ANTHYMN is a fantasy adventure MMORPG which provides players the stage to create, share and wield music together.
- Anthymn's story unfolds across the continent of Chora
- Chora is divided into 8 unique provinces with their own musical race and culture
- The provinces are engulfed in civil war, their maestros and champions are leading campaigns against each other in order to prove whose musical style is the most powerful
- One maestro, Tiarnen, believes there is a way to end the war peacefully by uniting the provinces under a national anthymn
- You will choose a province and character class based on your own music preferences in order to help complete the anthymn and unite the provinces or shatter them forever
- The game will be developed with the Unity engine for PC, Mac and Linux

As MMO developers and players we're in a very fortunate time.Epic combat, deep character customization and rich game world are now expected features but because of Anthymn's heightened musical qualities, we had an opportunity to renew and rebuild them into a unique core trinity.
Rhythmic Gameplay – We've worked very hard to strike a balance between song and sword by integrating rhythm and tempo mechanics throughout every level of game play. Try to imagine clicking your mouse to the cadence of your mount as it runs in order to give it a speed boost, or pressing keys in combination just like you would on a piano to unleash powerful tones, and you’ll see where this theme is headed.
Apprenticeship Experience – Lessons are a natural part of growth, which is why we built a music apprenticeship system around leveling your character.Within each province is a music conservatory where you can take theory lessons in order to gain enhanced skills and talents. We want every experience in Anthymn to help broaden your understanding of music theory and unlock your own personal abilities!
Community Collaboration – Song naturally brings people together and when you’re building a game driven by the player community it only makes sense to empower their artistic collaboration. Anthymn provides players a platform to compose and publish warsongs together for attack, healing, or defense against Chora’s greatest enemies.
Tiarnen’s story is one of hope as he stands surrounded by civil war.Long ago, 8 Imperators were elected by the provincials to govern Chora and help guide their newly discovered musical powers.Each of the Imperators was given command over a single tone but as music became more and more powerful, the Imperatorship fell to jealousy and spite over what the other possessed.Tensions rose and the Imperators eventually betrayed each other, fracturing Chora into 8 provinces.
After 300 years of civil war, the provinces are a ruined memory of their former glory as maestros and champions campaign against each other along the borders. Relentless in their pursuit, these masters of song and sword will not stop until absolute victory is at hand. Yet amongst the shattered drums, broken strings and bent horns, a shadow slips through unseen.
Traveling in secret, Tiarnen searches for the most powerful maestros and champions (players) in hopes of convincing them to help complete the anthymn and unite the provinces ending the Imperators rule forever.
As players progress through the game, learn more about music and gain greater control over it’s power they’ll be left with an important decision... Help complete the anthymn and use it to unite the provinces or shatter them forever. As a Maestro or Champion it is your actions and musical collaboration that will determine if the anthymn will be all Tiarnen hopes for, or turn against the provinces and shatter them forever.
String Theory is a veteran creative team from the gaming, visual effects and music industries who have helped develop projects such as Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, Firefly, Assassin’s Creed and Guild Wars 2. We all share a love for MMO's and have personal backgrounds in music.

When the opportunity came to present Anthymn on Kickstarter it was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down. It meant reaching our community during the development process, which to us is a dream come true.We’ve been crafting Anthymn’s design and story for over ten years now so you can imagine we were a little excited to showcase what’s been keeping all of us dedicated for so long already.
With your support we can reach our initial 600K funding goal and build three of Chora’s legendary provinces!
VENEFICA - The western island of Venefica is surrounded by treacherous rhythmic tides which have protected it’s tranquil shores for countless generations.This ebbing barrier has left the province free of outside influence allowing Tiarnen to shape Venefican music into the eclectic and colorful rock style it is today. From the crashing Caedence Cliffs to the mossy Whistlebrook Hills, Venefica’s acoustic environments help imbue powerful defensive warsongs which Tiarnen has used time and time again to guard it’s small shore line towns and villages from ruthless Lydian raids.
LYDVENKO – After countless generations of mining the Ore Plains of eastern Lydvenko, the Lydians have run out of malacite ore to forge their bloodthirsty songblades and haunting sickstrings.Like a plague, Lady Lydia infects her war tempered champions with military metal and dark hearted warsongs forcing them to march across Chora without rest until every province falls to her rhythm.
STEYRGRIM – Deep within Steyrgrim’s vaulted Echo Canyons the indulgent and profiteering Grims weave their manipulative economic skills into a tapestry of financial control over the provinces.With many of Chora’s inhabitants relying on trade to survive the war, Maestro Locrius has been leveraging desperation into devotion to help ensure his classic technique and rigid orchestral style becomes the most celebrated in all of Chora.Only one thing stands in his way, Tiarnen’s rumored anthymn.
If we’re fortunate enough to reach the initial funding goal we’ll continue Anthymn’s campaign in hopes of achieving our additional 300K stretch goals allowing us to build Chora’s remaining 5 provinces. Completing these additional provinces allows us to tell Tiarnen’s full story and lets players explore every part of Chora’s acoustic landscape and musical cultures.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Anthymn is an ambitious MMORPG but we wouldn’t be here unless all of us at String Theory believed it was achievable. There’s certainly a challenging road ahead but with over 75 years of artist and management experience in gaming, visual effects, animation and music production we feel confident in our ability to make Anthymn a reality.
Anthymn’s story and game design has been over ten years in the making, we’re not joking. With so much of our pre production already complete, our financial resources from a successful campaign can focus specifically on mechanics, databasing, server architecture and testing. This means expanding the core team with additional modelers, animators, programmers and engineers throughout 2013.
Our June 2016 release date commits us to a 36 month schedule with very demanding production milestones (which we’ll be sharing with you as Anthymn moves forward). Many of these milestones are dedicated to forging a workflow and infrastructure where real songs become playable game assets. Collaborating, creating and wielding music in game is a challenge the String Theory team has been looking forward to for a very long time now.
The risks which lie ahead of Anthymn’s development are very real but with your support and our team’s passion we can deliver a groundbreaking game to an incredible community.
For the Anthymn!
After the initial purchase of Anthymn it is free to play. We have implementing micro transactions but based purely on aesthetics and in game trinkets. If a player chooses to complete the game without the use of micro transactions he/she is completely able to do so unhindered.
English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin. If there is enough demand for other languages we will certainly try and support them.
As soon as possible! Some of the rewards won’t be ready until the game ships (hard cover art book and in game items etc.) but we’ll be producing items like T-shirts and many of the digital rewards immediately after the campaign wraps.
Vancouver has a world leading game development community and it’s labour tax credit lets us increase the value of every backer dollar by up to 17.5%!
UNITY UNITY three cheers for UNITY! We're so happy to be using this engine because it is very adaptable. It is a proven engine and allows us to utilize the API we develop in a mobile world as well, so we're planning on releasing small mobile apps for IOS and Android as we develop the game, which of course we're going to make available to you. Unity also makes it almost seamless to release the game on both MAC and PC.
Every song created within the Anthymn game is 100% credited to the player who developed it. Each player has the option of using the song for their own use or share it within the community. Once a song is published in the Anthymn catalogue the composer can share it just within his/her friend group or make it public. If made public any other player can use this song in their own gameplay and/or in a collaboration. No matter how many layers are added onto a song every player that has contributed will be credited, and will gain reputation status based on the song's popularity.
Though the instruments in Anthymn are highly stylized, they still represent ones you would find in an full orchestra or local guitar shop.
Though nothing can replace physically picking up a new clarinet, tarnished trumpet or legendary axe, we hope the music theory portion of Anthymn's education system will not only help enhance your character but also real world experiences with learning, writing and performing music.
Of course you can! We have a Champion character class for those of you who want to enjoy the music driven gameplay, but don't aren't interested in music creation and sharing. You still have all the benefits of being in a community that thrives on music. We have tailored the game so you will still be able to create music but this class thrives on rhythmic based hand to hand combat.
