Home movies rarely tell the whole story of someone's life. Instead, they show fragments of a story that the person behind the camera hopes and imagines his life to be. Years later, when one's current reality has faded or has become too difficult to bear, one returns to these memories, to this abridged story, to one version of the past. SCATTERED takes an unflinching look at my late father--a man who was fixated on documenting his life on film and who became estranged from me as a child--and unravels the story that he tried to create with his camera, to reveal the story that actually was.
WHY I'M MAKING THIS FILM:
I started this film in the fall of 2011, soon after my father passed away. After being estranged from him for most of my life, I was left with many questions that I thought would forever be unanswered. As I started putting the pieces of his life together and delved through over 100 hours of his home movies, I began to see his world and understand his story through his own eyes. While the decision to make SCATTERED stemmed from my own curiosity to uncover the truth about my father, I soon realized what was being revealed through his footage went far beyond my father's story.
Making this film has not only made me question my father’s motivation behind his incessant documenting, but it has also made me wonder about the universal need people have to immortalize certain parts of their pasts on film. How truthful are the stories that we uncover in home movies? Are these accurate reflections of our pasts? Or do they merely represent an idealized version of a certain story, one which we return to when dealing with the present becomes too much?
I hope this film inspires people to think about the role home movies play in shaping their memories and motivates them to ask questions about their own pasts that they might not have had the courage to do otherwise.
WHAT YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED FOR:
I currently have a fine cut of the film, but I'm hoping to raise money so that I can get the film festival-ready and work on building an audience. Your generous contributions will help cover the finishing costs of the film (color-correction, music, and sound mixing), and go towards creating a website, posters, postcards, and other promotional materials, as well as festival submission fees and delivery expenses.
Risks and challenges
I am happy to say that the biggest hurdles in making this film are behind me, but I still have one last challenge—to make sure that the film gets out into the world for other people to see. This film is very close to my heart and I am determined to reach this goal. However, I can’t do it alone.
This Kickstarter campaign and your donations will help make this final challenge possible, so if you are interested in the story, please consider becoming a part of this project! Any and every amount is appreciated, and even if you can’t contribute, please consider spreading the word about the project and passing this along to other people who you think might be interested.
Thank you so much for your time and for helping me finish this film!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
