This is the Specter Motor Works prototype. A fully street-legal, light-weight sports car with a focus on the driver. An elegantly streamlined design that embodies the pure definition of driving enjoyment.
This is a true thoroughbred track car for the road. At 4.5 inches off the ground and weighing in at 1,300 pounds, it provides a raw driving experience reminiscent of indy and formula cars. Designed with a fully mechanical and unassisted steering system, the driver is always connected directly to the road. Every turn, every curve, and every movement of the steering wheel gives direct feedback to the driver, making even the most mundane outing an exhilarating experience.
The streamlined aerospace inspired size does not compromise driver or passenger comfort. Ingress is still effortless, and the seats are independently adjustable, accommodating a wide range of driver heights. The interior features a carbon-fiber dashboard, ambient lighting, and a Bluetooth stereo system.
Modern cars have made many advances in power, handling, speed and efficiency. However, these features have also desensitized and disconnected the driver from the car. Traction control, ABS, smart suspension, and power steering, have all distanced the driver’s senses from the road feedback. Our new product aims to change all that.
Each vehicle is hand-crafted to order, with additional customizations available within reason. The car is made in California and is street legal and smog ready in all 50 states.
The car is equipped with Formula 1 inspired dual-wishbone push-rod suspension in the front and multi-link push-rod suspension in the rear. The coil-over shocks have 324 adjustable dampening settings, catering to a wide variety of driving preferences.
The rear-mid-engine configuration and low center of gravity, coupled with the track tuned suspension, give the vehicle a comfortable ride over rough street conditions, while being able to attack corners with ease and minimal body roll. The chassis’ unique door-less design allows for high rigidity, while giving the occupants maximum legroom and interior comfort.
A 2.0L turbocharged inline 4 - producing 252hp - is standard. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission, and offers high torque at low RPMs, giving the driver breathtaking acceleration off the line. The drivetrain in its base configuration gives the car a better power to weight ratio than exotics such as the Corvette Z06 and Ferrari 458. The engine also maintains full compliance to California smog standards, and can be registered as a standard passenger car.
The engine is sourced from Ford’s awarded Ecoboost engine lineup, and is the same drivetrain used in the Ford Focus ST. The wide variety of aftermarket drivetrain modifications available for the Focus ST are all compatible with this car, making the power possibilities even higher.
Drawing on our past experience of designing driver focused racers, we figured out a way to combine the reliability and quality of a modern vehicle with the performance required for the track. Mechanical components such as bushings, bearings, and linkages are all sourced from production car applications to ensure every part will last the life of the car.
Chassis and suspension components are designed and tested to withstand stresses far beyond those seen from the worst road conditions. 200+ hours of computer simulations on the chassis were conducted to achieve a highly rigid frame, that had a low member count and a low, balanced weight.
The body of the car will accentuate the boldness of the concept, while maintaining exceptional aerodynamics. Manufactured with all carbon fiber, the body will keep the weight of the vehicle low and allow visibility of key suspension and chassis structural elements, preserving the simplistic, open feel of the car.
The photos and video footage are of our prototype vehicle, which was built around a versatile Honda inline 4 engine. It was created as a test bed for our design and to prove its viability and appeal in the market. Several elements from this car will change going into production, including the wheel size, engine, interior, and body.
With over 10,000 test miles under the belt, we are ready to move on to the next step, and build the first production car and show the market what it can really do. The production car will incorporate the more powerful 252hp engine, our revised suspension, along with a complete interior and exterior bodywork.
The price for the production car is expected to be around $40,000. On the market today, there are very few options available for a car of this category; the Ariel Atom and KTM Cross Bow, two of the closest competitors, cost in excess of $80,000 for a street worthy version. Most importantly, these options are not smog legal, and are a massive headache to register for street use. The Specter Motor Works vehicle will be smog legal out of the box, and can be easily registered by anyone in all 50 states, in a similar manner to registering any other car.
We are asking the Kickstarter community to support our project, and help us fund our first production car. We will then be able to present our final product to the market, put it up against its competitors, and offer it for sale .

The Signature Series – The first 10 production vehicles will feature unique high quality appointments, including a custom plaque with the vehicle sequence number, along with unique carbon fiber body and interior accents. Other features will also include high performance shocks and competition tires. These vehicles will retail for the same price as the standard vehicle. However, they can only be reserved though Kickstarter.

Why are we using rectangular tubes in the chassis?
We use both round and rectangular tubes in varying thicknesses throughout the chassis. This is primarily for cost and ease of manufacturing. We have done a great deal of testing with this chassis to achieve a very high torsional rigidity and bending resistance. It is also very light weight for its size, as the cabin is large enough to fit 2 adults up to 6'4".
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk item in a car is the engine and drivetrain. For Specter Motor Works, this is not an issue, as this critical component is being sourced from Ford in its entirety, including the complete block, transmission, wiring harness, and ECU. This engine and transmission are tried and tested members of Ford's Ecoboost engine family, which has sold in the millions globally since its inception.
Safety is our top priority, and the chassis and suspension are designed with a high level of safety factor. Each component is designed and tested to withstand the roughest road conditions throughout the life of the car.
New challenges can and do always arise in an endeavor of this scale. Some of these challenges include supplier part availability and integration issues arising from misrepresented specifications.
