iPad Book App: We Are Looking for BETA Testers!

Development of the interactive iPad edition of Steampunk Holmes: Legacy of the Nautilus is coming along well. The ability to jump from section to section and to pop-up animated illustrations of gadgets and character portraits, among many other features, is in the works.

For example, when viewing the mechanical drawings of the Widowmakr, Sherlock Holmes motorcycle, the reader can animate various components of the vehical with the touch of a finger. See video at bottom (this is a composite video showing all the animations in one loop: in the application only the component you touch will animate and it will do so until you tap again or several seconds have elapsed.)

The portraits are also animated. If you forget who a character is you can touch their name and a profile with a portrait pops up on the screen. The portraits are all lightly animated - each in its own way.

The BETA, which launches in mid-August, will be limited to a few select individuals so that we can keep the BETA manageable. As soon as the BETA period is complete (when we've flushed out all the issues ) the full version of the Book App will be released to the App Store (no later than November of 2012).

If you are interested in being included in the BETA program, please send a message directly to us via Kickstarter's "send message" system or comment on this update. Tell us what kind of iPad you own and, in one sentence, why you think you would be a great BETA tester.

I'd like to be a beta tester but most projects regret choosing me due to my innate ability to crash pretty much any piece of software without raising a sweat. I have one of each gen of iPad and am a developer so I can test in the latest environments.

We've had a lot of folks volunteer to be BETA testers. It's really great to see this kind of community support!

We will make our selections about a week before we launch the BETA which should be in mid-August. Until then have no fear we have your request to be included and will contact you in August to let you know if you have been chosen as a BETA tester.

Looking forward to more applicants between now and then!

Why should I be a BETA tester?....because I am the legendary CAPTAIN ALEX of the HG Steamship! Also, I have an Ipad 3 and am a published author and artist who can probably give you constructive feedback on things like graphic design, flow, debugging GIFs and grammatical errors.

I have the "New iPad," and I should be in the beta because I love fish. Oh, you mean BETA. Then I should be in it because I am very, shall I say anal, about how apps on the iPad SHOULD work.

I have an iPad, I teach social and new media, I am a long time journalist and a Sherlock Holmes I am assiduous and might be able to provide decent and usable feedback...and it would be a hoot.

I have an iPad 2 in a BookBook cover. I teach iPhone and iPad classes with over 2,000 apps in my iTunes library as well as being a true Sherlockian and collector of Steampunk Apps (see Steampunk Weather).

I love fantastical stories and relish the idea of working parts books (can we say pop up books for adults?) that utilize the latest technology. Additionally, I'm a fellow designer and my background is print and web design and will always find the part that doesn't act accordingly. I own iPads 1 & 2. Please include me as a BETA tester!!

I would like to be a BETA tester. I have an iPad 2. I am a writer of steampunk, as well as a self-professed tech geek. Being a writer, I am meticulous in looking for errors. I use my iPad for everything, from writing, to research, games, and other similar things. My iOS is updated to the current version. I think I could be helpful in evaluating the current Steampunk Holmes: Legacy of the Nautilus at this time.

I would like to be a beta tester also. I have Ipad 2 and 3. I am on my Ipad all the time and though I may not be a software developer, I am a techie and can still be helpful.

I would love to be a beta tester. I have several iPads which I use for testing including iPad 1s, iPad 2s, iPad 3s (New iPad) with different versions of iOS on them. I test software and web sites I develop on various iDevices regularly.

I believe I would be a great beta tester more because I love this project than any of my technical abilities. The perfect combination of several of my favourite things: Sherlock Holmes, Steampunk and Storytelling.

    13. Andy Bates on July 8, 2012

I own an iPad 2 and would love to be a beta tester. I have 20+ years of experience in software development and testing and an eye for detail (especially grammar and spelling)

    14. Paul Selby on July 8, 2012

I would like to be a beta tester.

I have both an iPad 2 and new iPad and have prior experience testing software (and other products). I also have a son who's super-excited to see this and I could enlist him!

I have the new iPad (3rd Gen). I would love to be included in the beta test because I think this is a great idea and I spend lots of my time sorting through apps and only keeping those that live up to scratch (e.g. Bottom of the Ninth).

I want to be a BETA tester with my ipad1.
I'd be a great tester for I spend almost all my waking hours exploring its new apps.

I currently have the very first iPad, because I'm an early-adopter type, but I have a brand-spankiin'-new fancy one on order that should be part of my world next week. I would be an awesome beta because, not only am I a devoted Sherlockian, I fervently believe in the doors and windows and portals and who-knows-what else digital media can bring to the page--I love it, I want it to happen, and I want it to be awesome.

    19. ranti on July 8, 2012

Looks great! Love the details. I hope you would eventually create one that can be run on Android, since I'm not an iPad user.
