Are you guys going to update for iOS soon? Since the new system came out and on my new iPad and iphone8+ it wont download. Keeps saying that the app needs updating???

    2. denise on May 30, 2014

even though I downloaded the app quite some time ago I finally managed to find time to read.
      And I Like It!!!

It's quite refreshing and also intriguing to see the well known characters reinterpreted in Steampunk. Would love to read more adventure of Holmes.... ^ ^

I apologize. I really do understand how you feel. We had never intended to make the app free to everyone. In fact, it is going to cost us a lot of revenue. Sadly, we didn't know that our Gifting strategy would not work across international boundaries. It is a strategy that other kickstarter campaigns have planned to use - we we must warn them of the problems with it.

We have an obligation to ensure that you and other contributors can get the app for free and this was the only solution that works. Delivering our awards must be our first priority and this is the way we can do that.

We are extremely grateful to you and everyone else who contributed to our campaign. The truth is that without the good will of the 1,290 people who contributed we could not have built "Steampunk Holmes" which we hope is the first of many new enhanced books. Over 2 years from inception to kickstarter to final delivery was dedicated to this effort. All of us working in our spare time without pay. Every penny went to development of the product and hopefully people will think it well worth the effort.

      All the best,

    4. Jack on September 26, 2013

i feel a bit cheated now because the app is completely free to everyone. i could have paid less on a lower tier and gotten the physical copy along with all the ebooks and ipad app... sorry to complain, but it kind of sucks to lose the exclusivity of it. but such is the world i guess.

      Hi Emily,

You can go into your project settings and choose not to be notified any longer - I can't exclude you specifically. We are still delivering on our kickstarter awards so it makes sense for us to continue using the kickstarter update process.

Could you please start a mailing list for people who want constant information about your project. I stopped being interested in receiving updates over a year ago.

      Hi Jorn,

Thanks for asking. I'm going to post an update for all contributors tonight.

Any news on the iPad release date?

    9. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on June 24, 2013

      Hi Matt,

I wish I had a good answer for that questions. I've been waiting for the author to finish the 2nd book but she has not done that yet - we are all very anxious to see what happens next! I'll let you know (along with the rest of the kickstarter supporters) when I have an update.

    10. Matt on June 23, 2013

Enjoyed the first story and I know you've been focused on the iPad app. Any timeline for the next six stories? Are we looking at 2013 or is this a much longer project?

According to update #32, the app was supposed to get released today. What's up?

    12. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on January 6, 2013

      Thanks, Penni!

    13. Penni Walker on January 5, 2013

Well that sucks on the no signature, but it's all good. I have my signature CD and that's even better. That's a shame they didn't make it but do whatever is easier. I'd like to know about the iPad app also. Thought I missed it.

What about that lifetime subscription thingy and what about Frankenstein?

Please give us an update, preferably a non-backer-only one since a friend of mine is really waiting for the iPad release.

    16. Guns_n_Droids on November 22, 2012

Any news on Ipad app? A lot of time passed since the last update on status.

    17. Glint on August 13, 2012

Oh please don't get me wrong, the story itself is great :) I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did my wife so from my point of view you have the latitude.
I'm happy to just sit here waiting patiently for the rest of them now.

    18. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on August 13, 2012

      Hi Londo2001,

Thanks for the support and the feedback. As we work toward the highest possible quality its this kind of feedback which really helps us achieve that!

    19. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on August 13, 2012

      Hi James,

I see that I never really responded to your longer message.

Thank you for the feedback and I am sorry you were a bit disappointed. We are hardly veterans at the printing side of things but we are working hard to make improvements. Hopefully, people will enjoy the story itself enough to allow us some latitude on our first printing.

    20. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on August 13, 2012

Great! Btw - I love the profile picture!

    21. Musictwig on August 10, 2012

Received my physical copy today, thanks!

    22. Glint on August 10, 2012

Received my first book and the CD today, which I think is pretty good for a shipment out to Australia! I must say the CD is excellent and very much enjoyed listening too it.

Like the others I was somewhat under the (admittedly, in hindsight, wrong) impression that there was going to be a bit more colour and life to the printed version. Now the lack of colour (whilst disappointing) I can understand to a point, colour printing is expensive and there is a limited budget here, but a few more B&W illustrations throughout would have been nice. The steampunk world that you are pushing for this version of Holmes is very visual and colourful (steampunk by its nature is a very visual style) and a lot of that 'feel' is lost in this book because of its current presentation.

The size and feel of the book is spot on, the quality of the book is fine too and of course we all know that the story is excellent, but I do feel that it is let down a little by the lack of illustrations. The original Strand Magazine stories had some wonderful B&W sketches throughout them and the same approach here could have immensely helped this book. Things such as little sketches at the start of the chapters and/or little snippets of drawings in various places throughout the book to visually reinforce the steampunk motif would have elevated this book to a whole new level.

Still it must be remembered that this is the first of a number of these books and it is going to perhaps take at least one printing to get the correct feel and balance between text and picture.

Heres hoping that the right balance can be achieved. The game is afoot.

    23. Londo2001 on August 7, 2012

      Hi Richard
Thanks for the update, I’m not looking to jump on the bandwagon for a free copy of the illustrated book I just thought some feedback would help improve the next book. If and when the illustrated book materialises I’d be happy to pay extra for a copy. Anyway when all is said and done you guys and gals have done a great job brining my two favourite genres together and I’m really looking forward to the other books.

    24. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on August 6, 2012

      Hi Londo2001,

I understand your disappointment. The illustrations could be much better quality I agree and I'm working with the publisher so that we can provide crisper sketches.

What I cannot do is provide everyone with a four color book full of all the art - or at least my budget doesn't allow for that yet. Actually, that was never our intention with this award, but we should have been more explicit about that - I see that now.

I'm hopeful that most people will understand that we really are doing our best and want to improve and will do everything we can to make our contributors happy.

    25. Londo2001 on August 6, 2012

      Hi Richard

I received my book on Saturday and have to agree with most of the points raised by David.
This is not the Illustrated book I was expecting. I’ve downloaded the PDF version an soon realised it was not going to be a long read but I was expecting much better artwork and more of it. As David pointed out the artwork looks horrible and doesn’t do any justice to the artist.
I’ve still not actually read the book yet and really looking forward to that but the overall presentation and quality could be better.

    26. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on July 30, 2012

      Hi David,

I'm truly sorry that you are feeling disappointed with the paper book - looking back at the materials you referenced I can see how anyone would be expecting much more.

Here is what I can do for you: I can refund your money if you provide me with your paypal account address or, if you prefer, I can send you a poster of your choice. If neither of these options make you happy I can put you on a list to receive a fully color illustrated edition of the book which we have planned, but have not announced, for next year.

Let me know which of these three options you prefer and I'll be happy to make good on it. I really don't want anyone feeling ripped off.

      Thanks for your comments,

    27. David A. Watanabe on July 30, 2012

Honestly, I feel a bit ripped off. On the main page it talks about the beautiful artwork that had been created for this book - and you showed off some amazing looking stuff. But none of it appears anywhere in the hard copy of the book, besides eight "portraits", which honestly look horrible in b&w. Why doesn't my book look anything like the one illustrated under the 'What is Steampunk Holmes?' section on the main page? In the 'What is Multi-Channel Publishing' section, you even go as far as to say "we'll have an illustrated printed edition as well". Is this a different copy of the book? Did I have to check a different box somewhere? I understand that a lot of the artwork was meant for interactive features, but why couldn't the static artwork be used in the book? Or even some color? I really feel like I missed the memo that the book was going to be published as a thin, soft-cover, large type, unillustrated 'book'.

      Hi G. Moran,

Sorry you are having problems. I just check the code posted in Update #18 and it looks fine. Did you try that code? Note: If you already downloaded the book using that code you won't be able to download it again.

Ok. My domain register was the culprit. I extended the time I owned the domain by five years and was rewarded with a disassociation of the domain with our web site. It will take up to 24 hours to fix.

      Darn. Working on it!!

    38. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on May 20, 2012

Tim, if you have downloaded the book before than you have to download it in the same format the next time. If this isn't the issue or if you just can't get it to download, send me a private message and I'll send you a new coupon code.

Hi guys, anyone else having problems downloading from Smashwords? I've input the code (after irritatingly having to go through the whole sign up process to smash books) but it tells me page is invalid and won't download? Can someone help with this please? Many thanks

    43. Richard Monson-Haefel 3-time creator on May 6, 2012

      Hi Penni,

Not sure why you had a problem. Over 900 people have downloaded and used the coupon to get the book for free. Perhaps you can ask for help from the folks at It's probably just something you missed.

Let me know if you want some help with this.

    44. Penni Walker on May 5, 2012

Well, just got the email about being able to use the coupon code to get the eBook and there was no where for me to put in the coupon code :( 99cents is no biggie, but I hope that doesn't happen with the rest of the extras and books we get.

I'm going to write a longer missive about this as an official update but I just wanted to say briefly how grateful I am to everyone of the contributors for their pledges. There are so many positive outcomes from this campaign. Having the funds we need to complete development of the first book AND development of the second is a dream come true. Meeting and talking with many, if not all, the contributors was fantastic. So many wonderful people! YOU ROCK!
