About this project
What's it all about?
I wrote a novel, Communion of Dreams. It's speculative fiction, set in 2052. After many long delays and a couple very frustrating narrow misses in getting it published conventionally, I decided to self-publish the book.
This proved to be a good thing. Almost 60,000 people either downloaded Communion of Dreams or purchased a paperback copy of the book. The reviews are very positive, as has been the feedback I have gotten directly from people all around the world.
Something which frequently shows up in those reviews and feedback are questions about what else I've written - what other works of fiction are available, or would be available? Am I planning on a sequel to Communion of Dreams? Or maybe a prequel, set in the same 'universe' as that book?
As it happens, for a long while now I have been thinking about several such books. Partly this is an outgrowth of having to think through the backstory for Communion of Dreams - how that world came to be what it is, how those characters came to be who they are, how that projected future relates to our own reality.
One such book is St. Cybi's Well. It is primarily concerned with a pivotal moment in the story of Darnell Sidwell (one of the main characters of Communion of Dreams), and set in Wales. Why Wales? Because of that country's rich history of Celtic mystical sites - the so-called 'holy wells' which are associated with healing energies and miracles of different sorts. One such place is the 'well' of St. Cybi ("Ffynnon Gybi" in Welsh), where something happens which fundamentally changes Darnell Sidwell, and sets the stage for Communion of Dreams. Hence the title of the book.
Why do I want your money?
Well, in addition to being a book & document conservator, I supplement my income (and keep my writing skills honed) by doing a lot of freelance writing for various publications (see my bio for more info) as well as working on writing fiction. But there's only so much I can accomplish writing and reworking a manuscript on my own. There are some skills necessary for a good finished product I just don't have. This was true of both of my previous books (each of which have been praised for their finished quality). I need the services of a good editor. Someone to do the interior layout of the finished book in getting it ready for printing. Someone to do the necessary digital file preparation for electronic publication.
So I'm looking for funding which will allow me to get this work done so that I can concentrate on what I'm good at: writing and revising. Basically, I'm looking for advance sales in order to get this project done. In addition, funding will allow me to purchase the necessary materials for the hand bound books, as well as getting the special print run done for those books.
What will you get for your money?
Well, that depends.
There's a $1.00 reward there for all those who have downloaded Communion of Dreams for free. This is your chance to just say "thanks for that great book." And if even half of the people who downloaded the book during one of my promotions kicked in a buck, we'd meet the funding goal instantly. So fund for $1.00 and get a nice warm fuzzy feeling along with my thanks.
At $5.00 you'll get a download copy of St. Cybi's Well when it is released to the public. Kick in $10.00 and you'll get the electronic version approximately a month earlier than the public release of the book.
From $20.00 to $75.00 you can get signed & inscribed paperback copies of the books, as well as the electronic versions. See the "rewards" there in the right column for details.
Now, from $100.00 on up, things start to get more interesting. Because here you start to get very limited edition copies of the books which will be bound by hand by me. Furthermore, they will be on a better quality paper stock, with actual folded & gathered signatures rather than the so-called 'perfect' bindings of single sheets in the paperback edition.
All the hand bound books will be individually numbered, signed, and inscribed. The edition number of each type will not exceed the total possible "backers" plus two artist's proof copies. In addition, backers at this level (unless they wish for anonymity) will be listed on the St. Cybi's Well website.
Here are some images of the sort of bindings I will be doing. Note that I have yet to design the books, and with the leather bindings the backer will have a choice of the leather color, so these are just representative of other work I have done:
And those who choose one of the Archives Packages will get a handmade clamshell box similar to these:
Can I actually do this?
Which is to say, finishing the manuscript won't be a challenge. And I already have an established relationship for the necessary editing, book design & layout, as well as the digital publishing prep. Just take a look at Communion of Dreams in either print or electronic versions to see how professional that book is. All of this can be done in the time-frame proposed.
The hand-bookbinding is something I have been doing professionally for more than 20 years. I am very good at this, and my clients love my work.
I am very confident that I can self-publish St. Cybi's Well as well as create the artistic bindings. And I have both the experience and proven track record to back up that confidence.
