The Avian Project
is my first full-length solo recording project. I am a versatile professional soprano in the Washington, D.C. area. With a composition background I have a special interest in NEW music. Please join me on this exciting adventure to create an album of world premieres.
I am thrilled to share my journey with you!

I have the pleasure of working with many talented composers in the Washington D.C. area, and have asked a few (who have written for me in the past, and of whom I am immensely fond) to write additional new works for me to present as complements to the inspiration piece on this recording. These new works will be presented for the first time on my Avian CD, and will be premiered in a live recital in the D.C. area. I will update you as each composer shares their process, and of course when each step of the album is completely recorded and released, both digitally and on CD.
The inspiration piece, a song cycle for Soprano and piano by Maryland composer Eric Kitchen, came to me through my voice teacher and dear friend, Bonnie Kunkel. The Olney Avian Verse, was written 13 years ago for his young daughter. I was enchanted by this lovely group of songs from the first time I sang it through- the poetry by William Cowper, the music- it resonates with me!

Several other composers will begin their composition process shortly. Expect regular progress updates!
Deborah Sternberg, soprano. (Click on my picture for my official bio.) My projects are varied, creative, and I am dedicated to creating the best musical experiences possible!
I have worked with the incomparable pianist Mark Vogel several times in the past. Recently we presented several songs of Lili Boulanger's Clairières dans le ciel as part of a Washington Master Chorale concert.
Deborah and Mark present Lili Boulanger's Un poète disait, recorded live at the 2012 Washington Master Chorale concert.
The wonderful Ed and Amy Kelly are, respectively, our engineer and producer/editor.
Our recordings will be held in a number of church spaces to provide the best acoustics possible for the music.
When the recording is complete, I plan to present a recital here in the Washington, DC area, as a thank you to our backers.
Three recording sessions, one recital, and producing the CDs will include the following expenses:
- Pianist, venue, and tuning fees (rehearsals, 3 recording sessions + recital)
- Session engineer (3 recording sessions)
- Session producer and sound editor (3 recording sessions plus all post-concert editing work)
- The manufacture and distribution of 500 CDs
- Promotion, photography, fees, materials
- Record AVIAN: August 2013
- Edit/Master tracks: October-December 2013
- Record new works: April-June 2014
- Production: August-September 2014
- CD release and recital: November 2014
Risks and challenges
My plan is detailed, and every collaboration must have contingencies.
Should a composer's work not be completed in time, I have several pieces to hand that will complement Eric's cycle beautifully.
Mark and I love working together and our schedules are both flexible enough to make this project happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
