THE PROJECT
SantElm66 is the outcome of our passions and preoccupations over a period of many years. City-dwellers for most of our existence, we have become increasingly conscious of reducing our carbon footprint. Our Spanish roots led us to choose the increasingly eco-sensitive Costa Brava region where we are launching an innovative project. SantElm66 will be a place to pursue slow living - relying on local products and services, respecting nature, heritage and authenticity - which we can share with others.

The vision of SantElm66 is rooted in the belief that each of us has the power to shape the future by making responsible choices on a daily basis. We will develop ideas together, connect and learn from each other, and discuss issues of sustainable development and respect for our environment. These multi-disciplinary sessions - group discussions, conferences, site visits and hands-on activities - will mix professionals and non-professionals, and are open to all.  Be one of the first to participate in a workshop by becoming a backer of SantElm66

The project is well underway and we are almost there, but need additional funds to complete creation of the site to host SantElm66

The construction of the building, now 70% complete, is itself a model of environmental reflection. The design concept takes  into account the climate, the natural site, orientation to light and shade and is respectful of local traditions. An ingenious 3-shed roof concept permits light to enter from above and the open-floor plan lets this light filter through both the upper and lower levels. The structure will be energy efficient to heat and be cooled by natural ventilation. Traditional openwork ceramic tiles employed on opposite sides of the façade allow air to circulate liberally. The building will be self-sufficient as we will use solar panels to produce all the energy needed.

The implementation of SantElm66 in northern Spain allows us to support a community of local builders, artisans and suppliers. All materials are locally sourced and the craftsmen are from the immediate vicinity. We have an amazing team working with us.

To complete the construction and landscaping in accordance with a high level of sustainability the money will be used to:

  •  purchase and install thermal windows, glazing and joinery to ensure the building is energy-efficient
  • purchase and install solar panels to cover electrical production for heating and running the building
          - passive solar panels for preheating water
           - solar photovoltaic power generation panels in compliance with the new energy self-sufficiency law
  • purchase and install a central control for regulating energy expenditure
  • finish the interiors
           - purchase and install cork flooring
           - purchase and build furniture made of wood and recycled products
  • purchase and install equipment for recovery of rainwater for watering and maintenance of plants
  • landscape and plant the grounds - all vegetation will consist of hardy native species that do not need much watering such as cork trees, green oak trees, olive trees, aloes, prickly pear, cistus labdanum, eucalyptus, etc

Once the site is completed we can launch the first workshops. Goal: summer 2020.

THE LOCATION

SantElm66 is based in an exceptional location overlooking the bay of Sant Feliu de Guixols on the Costa Brava, between sea and forest, and less than 5 minutes walking distance from the town center. It is also a 10-minute climb to the Sant Elm hermitage, 100m above sea level, which offers one of the most breathtaking views of the Mediterranean coastline.

Sant Feliu de Guixols is a historic town which grew from the settlement around a Benedictine monastery built in the  10th century. By the 18th century it had developed into an important trading center thanks to its fishing port, boat-building expertise and cork production.

Today Sant Feliu is a captivating town that functions all year round, and has preserved its authenticity - there are no fast-food chains or brand-name boutiques. Small shops and local commerce thrive.

Sant Feliu de Guixols has important marine resources and is active in protecting and preserving marine biodiversity in the area. It has a long-standing architectural heritage which is being carefully restored.

Workshop participants will enjoy a genuine experience of Sant Feliu as locals rather than tourists, benefiting themselves and the town.

The site is an hour from Barcelona and 30 minutes from Girona, and easily accessible by public transport. The region, known as “Emporda”, produces some of Spain’s finest olive oils and wines. It boasts many forests and natural reserves with great hiking trails as well as organic farms and vineyards which workshop participants will be invited to visit.

WORKSHOPS FOR A BETTER FUTURE
The future is not what will happen, but what we are going to doHenri Bergson

The concept for SantElm66 is the crystallization of our reflection over many years - exploring how good and thoughtful design, architecture and urban planning combined with respect and care can contribute to better living and a healthier planet.
Workshops held at SantElm66 will focus on preserving the environment through human actions: architecture, urban planning, landscape, agriculture, natural resource and energy management, as well as cultural activities.
These workshops and activities are intended for anyone who is passionate about the environmental issues facing our world today, regardless of technical knowledge or qualifications. Participants will engage in hands-on activities, as well as having time to relax and enjoy nature and good, healthy living.
All of our workshops are based around the following questions: How can we live intelligently in the present in order to preserve the future of the planet? What choices and actions should we take to improve our living environment now and for the future?

6-day workshops will take the form of encounters and discussions during 4 hours each morning, led by a specialist in each selected field. The themes will be:

  •  1. Sustainable architecture and urban planning: This workshop deals with the theme of environmental architecture and urban planning, or how to intervene in a responsible way in a given place. It will lay the foundations for a thought process committed to sustainable development and its implication in our daily lives.
  •  2. Landscape and landscaping: This workshop deals with landscape, or what we see and experience as we move around in urban or rural settings.  It will seek to define the tools for a critical observation of our environment.
  •  3. Agriculture and rural development: This workshop deals with rural environment, which participates in a primordial way in the ecosystem of any given place.
  •  4. Design: This workshop examines the new modes of production and how we consume objects and everyday products.
  •  5. New perspectives on artistic practices: This workshop will explore how artists' work can influence our perception of the world and help us gain new perspectives.
  •  6. Slow living: This workshop is inspired by the experience and philosophy of Henry David Thoreau. It will deal with finding new ways of living and different orientations for our life.

During the 6-day sessions SantElm66 can accommodate up to four people (two bedrooms). The workshop leader will reside onsite during the same period. A wide range of lodgings is available in town.

3-day mini-workshops will center around local resources and include at least one visit to a related site nearby. The themes will be:

  •  1. Organic farming
  • 2. Organic wine production
  • 3. Organic olive oil production
  • 4. Tradition local ceramic production
  • 5. Tradition of cork in local artisanal production
  • 6. Recycled materials and new design - low cost / easy tech
  •  7. “Slow” market and regional cooking

Dinner-conferences with a specialist or personality will be organized for small groups.
Activities and workshops at SantElm66 will be held during the months of June and July.
Further details of the workshop programs can be found on the website santelm66. Names of workshop leaders will be provided later.
Once funding is completed, backers will be asked to state their theme preference and we will do our best to organize the workshops according to demand. Activities will be trilingual: English / Spanish / French as needed.

Risks and challenges

As architect and designer, both seasoned freelancers, we are aware of the challenges set by a venture that needs a high level of organization and relies on multiple collaborators. We have many years of combined experience in directing and managing complicated projects, both public and private.

Charles has a long and impressive record of delivering architectural projects to a high standard, within budget and on time. He also has many years of experience as professor of architecture and director of workshops. Louise has designed and directed numerous publications involving diverse contributors and managed a home gallery for a number of years.

We have carefully selected our team of collaborators and suppliers for SantElm66, and are confident in their capacity to finish the construction. We will be supervising progress at every stage. With the launch projected for summer 2020, we have given ourselves a sufficient margin to deal with unexpected surprises.

Most importantly, we are committed to making SantElm66 happen - we can do this with your help!
