About

"Indian Peaks Wilderness is one of Colorado's and the West's most sublime places. It is a bastion of wildness and biodiversity. Tom Rouse certainly has done justice to its beauty with his photography. I only regret that he beat me to the punch with a book about it!" -- John Fielder, Nature Photographer

I explored and climbed the Indian Peaks area with a digital camera for the past 14 years. My goal was to create a portrait of a mountain range. I selected 130 of the best shots from my archive of 10,000 images to publish a truly unique work of photographic art. If you love the Rocky Mountains as much as I do, you will want to back this project and receive from our Rewards categories a copy of the book for yourself and maybe for someone else.

130 Stunning Rocky Mountain Wilderness Photographs in One Gorgeous Book.

Limited Edition of 1,000 hardbound: numbered and personally signed.

Also available:

Standard Edition softbound.

Library Edition: sturdy library-grade binding.

Custom Hand-Crafted Bindery Editions: several options.

Gift Packs: 5 or 10 soft or hardbound books (while they last).

2015 Calendars: brighten your day!

8.5 x 11 Prints from the book

Printed and bound in Colorado USA, not in China or Korea like so many import photo books. Limited Edition hardbound is made to rigorous standards to give you and your next generation hours of viewing pleasure.

Our target goal of $3,000 will assure production of a 130 photographs book. We have completed 99% of the work already. Your backing will guarantee that we reach the summit. And guarantee you a thrilling visual reward for backing our project.

Keep in mind what a wonderful gift this book will be for friends and family during the approaching holiday season.

Rewards:

As you can see on the column to the right, we offer 16 Rewards levels, one is right for you.

There are rewards at each level, starting at $5 with a print from the book, rolled and mailed in a tube.

How could we do a project like this and not offer a Calendar for 2015? At the $25 level, you'll have a reward that will be the envy of your office and brighten your day.

All books are 8.5 x 11" format.

Standard Edition: softbound.

Limited Edition of 1,000:  We start with a hardbound, personally signed and numbered version with no slip case. All foil stamped spine and front covers, with dust jacket, library grade black nuba material for cover. Total of all versions limited to no more than 1,000 copies.

Also Slip Cover options available in several very limited collectable hand-crafted bindery versions:

  • Grey Linen book cover, foil stamped spine and front cover with black linen slip case (only 100 available).
  • Cowhide cover with black linen slip case (only 50 available)
  • Moroccan (white) leather cover with burgundy slip case (only 25 available).

Library Donation Rewards: Our rewards program at the $240 level features a copy for you and one for a public or private library of your choice.  The frontispiece will identify you as the donor to your favorite library. We believe our library rewards program to be unique and a beneficial contribution to your community. Your chosen library may decide on a maximum number of donations to be received.

Business plan:

We won't go in much detail here, but we'd like to mention a few significant marketing aspects that have not escaped our attention and we feel are key components to the success of our project.

There are approximately three million people who live within a 75 mile radius of the Indian Peaks. Many of these folks love the outdoors and are active in mountain recreation that we have in the region. 100,000 or more people visit the Indian Peaks Wilderness each year, making it one of the most popular and visited of all the Wilderness Areas in the U.S.

Because this is the first-ever photo book of the Indian Peaks, we anticipate this offering of the Limited Edition Printing of 1,000 to be fully-backed and exceed our expectations.

We are asking only for enough backing to go to press and fulfill a small number of rewards. But we expect to print and deliver books to as many backers as we receive orders.

This book will not be sold in bookstores.  We researched the existing distribution chain for retail books and found it is not designed to support small micropublishing efforts like ours. It is better for us to self-micropublish and micromarket select titles. Success requires dead-on precision and procedures, there is no room for error. You can say the same about mountain climbing.

There will not be any eBook or electronic editions. The splendor of the Indian Peaks can only be appreciated as a traditional print book. A portrait of a mountain range would look silly on a smartphone. Mountains are big. Timeless. They demand a book.

Any future books will be available direct-online from our Web site http://indianpeaksphotobook.com/ and possibly through select Web-based distribution channels.

Budget:

Approximately one-third will go to taxes and commissions. A small commission goes to Kickstarter for hosting the program and to Amazon Payments for running the purchasing platform. We are happy to pay the United States Treasury for taxes, as after all: the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area is operated by the United States Forest Service for all the people of our country and visitors alike. Our taxes help support that.

Approximately 40 - 50% will go to direct production printing, binding and fulfillment costs. Book is 100% made in Colorado USA.

The balance will go to some preproduction work: design, layout, photo editing, image optimization, ISBN number and post-production fulfillment requirements.

Our Vision:

The Indian Peaks Photobook: Wind Rocks Sky is the first of what we plan to be a series of projects that combine traditional crafts such as hand-crafted book binding with the latest in high quality digital print production.

Micropublishing: The ability to reproduce high resolution images with shorter print runs, combined with readily identifiable market segments previously thought too small to be served has created a unique set of opportunities. Wind Rocks Sky is an example of the latest generation digital printing technology reproducing outstanding digital photography to serve a specific micromarket.

Personalized: Only the advent of digital printing could have made possible the unique forms of personalization embodied in our Rewards program.

Craftsmanship: Colt Print Services of Boulder will print all books and soft covers and finish them. We are fortunate to create alliances with a printing services firm of artistic vision and the services of the 85-year old Denver Bookbinding Company. It is exciting to offer traditional hand binding methods by true artisans at Denver Bookbinding Company who continue to serve libraries and book collectors throughout the United States. We are proud to have them on our team. PLEASE NOTE: Limited Edition bindings are handcrafted and require an additional several weeks in plant, therefore delivery of these will be in November, 2014.

With the success of this project we plan to expand, create and explore new horizons to open micropublishing opportunities for more photographers and writers.
