A game of ferocious strategy and charming tactics upon Cornish waters.
Sail the bay, sell your rum, attack your friends, steal their florins and stow your plunder below decks for GLORIOUS VICTORY!
Plot your course, and plan your maoeuvres, but the winner will be one who can change tack with the shifting winds and tides. Set your sail according to Neptune's whims and you'll gain good advantage. Take risks with the whirlpools, pit your loyal crew on your opponents and make tactical sacrifices to the local seamonster to really open up the game play.
The project is almost complete and ready to be pushed off the plank into the big wide world. We now just need your help to raise the funds needed to go to print.
Here are some examples of the 70+ uniquely scurrilous crew you'll be meeting...
... and some of the dangerous rum you'll be handling...
... not to mention some of the ridiculous situations you'll be finding yourself in...
Here's a brief circumnavigation of the game:
A series of more detailed instructional videos will be appearing on our YouTube channel over the next few weeks - the first of which (and a pdf of the current rule book) can be found toward the bottom of the page.
In a nutshell: You start with lots of rum. You want to end with lots of florins. You can get those florins by honest sales at port or you can wait for someone else to sell their rum, then plunder their profits like the vagabond you are. Building a good crew will help you in your pirating exploits, and throwing sacrifices to Morgawr the seamonster will gain you advantage if the wind and tide aren't on your side.
Every backer will get our most huge gratitude for believing in the project, but luckily we also have more than eternal thanks on offer.
Wait, what? You have an album?
Yes, yes, it is really true, we have an album of piratey songs to go with our board game. And the even better news is that you don't have to wait for it to be manufactured, it will be ready to download in December.
Ten original songs telling tales of the crew: Gurty's murderous galley food, the hidden pathos of Bob's mermaid entanglements, and the tragic revelation of why Bogdan's best friend is a shark. And you can even have a taste by checking out Wrap Me in the Skull & Bones on our YouTube channel.
All tracks are written, performed and produced by our very own Matt Tweed, who handily, as well as being a smashing illustrator, happens to be a professional musician, producer and part-time pirate.
We want all our stretch goals to make what's in the box better for everyone. If we exceed our goal we will be able to bring economies of scale into play and transform the components to more premium versions.
SeaGriffin Games is designer/illustrator duo Cait Russell & Matt Tweed, and we have been working on this game for over 18 months during which time it has been thoroughly play-tested by friends, family and gamers' groups. We got great feedback from our demos in the Playtest zone at the UK Games Expo 2017. Look out Essen, we are headed to Spiel. The crew say they'll let us go for that, but only if we wear the pirate outfits... So if you're there, come say Ahoy! We will be showing the game on Friday 27th 12-1pm at the Kickstarter booth - Hall 1: 1D-129, table 3 and generally making a nuisance of ourselves.
But don't let the outfits fool you, real pirates we are not! We've costed this project to within and inch of its life and we are confident that we can deliver great quality, on budget and on schedule. Everything we have made, we have made ourselves as a labour of love and now we just want to see it out there. The £23k we are asking for covers printing costs, KS fees, shipping from China to the UK & US, taxes and rewards. The schedule has also been well researched, taking into account the holiday seasons in the West and in China.
The development process
We have been playing the game at every opportunity - from it's earliest graph paper days through to it's most recent fully worked up form. Many rules have come and gone, only the very best have stuck. A huge thank you to all our play testers for their feedback, comments and late night piracy.
Here's a couple of things some of our testers have been kind enough to say about it on our Facebook page.
"An utterly brilliant and genius game. Gameplay and strategy shifts every time"
"I don't think I'll ever get bored of playing it as there are so many different ways to go about it AND ... there is simply so much to read about the crew and the rum simply for fun"
"I have had an early copy of this game in my hand and I loved it. It's hilarious. The attention to detail is incredible. The engaging art work is almost usurped by the fantastic prose"
The full game is suitable for medium-casual gamers aged 12+ but there are rule variants for a simpler version that would suit ages 9+ and the replayability of content and additional rules for the more experienced player give it wide appeal.
More detail on gameplay:
Please do have a look at the rule book PDF. There are a few tweaks yet to be made but it will give you a good idea of the game. We also intend to make a series of short instructional videos over the next few weeks. Here's our first - explaining the different ways in which Morgawr the sea monster affects game play
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter campaign so we are very aware that we will be learning as we go to some extent - but we are working hard to mitigate as many hiccups as we can by partnering up with the excellent Panda Game Manufacturing for our production phase and the fabulous Games Quest and their North American partner QM Logistics for the fulfillment of rewards. These companies are renowned for their great communication and we shall be passing that on to our backers every step of the way. Working with truly professional third parties comes at a slight premium but the peace of mind is worth it. Barring acts of Neptune, we think we have it covered...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
