Help us take 'Running Into Me' to Edinburgh Fringe, the largest theatre festival in the world!
Hello potential supporters! I have an amazing opportunity to perform my solo play, Running Into Me at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Performing there offers global exposure to producers, artistic directors, managers and other theatre professionals plus the potential of teaching Play Solo workshops, which I created to help kids write and perform solo plays about their own lives. To realize these opportunities, I must raise $22,000 in 30 days. Yes, this is an enormous undertaking. But sharing a true and uplifting story, inspiring others to create their own, and a personal need to help young people succeed absolutely fuels this endeavor and far outweighs the challenges.
Statistically speaking, I was never supposed to even get out of South Central Los Angeles, let alone become a New York City actor! But that's what happened. And I got pretty good work: STOMP, Law and Order, work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Tony winning playwright Donald Margulies, a TV series with Peter Berg... still I needed to make money between gigs. So I thought I'd try working with kids. I like kids. Why not?
I saw children walking through violent neighborhoods, watching their backs every block and attending sub par public schools with little or no parenting or role models. I thought wow, they're growing up worse than I did! They had strong feelings about their surroundings and a deep need to express them. So I listened. Their words and my life experiences inspired Running Into Me. The story of a person's search for deeper meaning and success in life.
I've been hard at work on Running Into Me for 7 years, spending the last 4 performing it all over New York City: Cherry Lane Studio Theatre, 78th Street Theatre, Dixon Place, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Theatre ROW/ 42nd street, numerous school groups and colleges and just recently at La Mama in the East Village, where it was chosen as one of 5 unconventional solo plays for their inaugural "A Series of One" festival. Next, I perform in Los Angeles at Whitefire Theatre. And after that? With your support, I'm off to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest theatre festival on the planet! Last August, there were over 45,000 performances of nearly 3,000 shows in 31/2 weeks. I am planning 24 performances of Running Into Me in 25 days.
Your donations will go to production costs: venue rental, festival entry fee and marketing expenses such as PR, posters and fliers, street crew for flier distribution and Fringe/venue brochure fees. The enormous volume of shows makes the Fringe a highly competitive place to present. So marketing, next to the actual performance, is absolutely essential to bringing in audiences. Your financial support will also cover running expenses like transportation, housing and meals for myself and my team.
In addition to sharing an inspiring story with an internationally diverse audience, performing at the Fringe Festival also gives them an opportunity to see and hear the voice of youth in a positive light. That mission is at the heart of Running Into Me. Please contribute what you can, and equally as important, pass this link on to other potential supporters.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk is no one will attend my show. I am not known at Edinburgh. This is why the the bulk of donations will go to marketing. I am hiring a publicist who will start working NOW to get the word out to media, printing up hundreds of poster and fliers, hiring a street crew to distribute them and stepping up my social media.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
