THINK OF THE CHILDREN is a handmade, satirical horror comic about the events leading to the original Comics Code Authority.
COMICS MAKE KIDS EVIL!
That’s a fact. Or at least it was in 1954, when the United States Senate Subcommittee to Investigate Juvenile Delinquency convened. As a result of these hearings, comic book publishers feared government regulation and formed their own self-regulatory body that created the Comics Code Authority, purging comics of everything from violence to divorce. For 57 years this code affected comics publishing in one form or another. In late January of 2011, DC Comics and Archie Comics (the last surviving members of the original pact) both decided to drop the Comics Code from their products. Comics are free to make kids evil again and the world will never be the same.
THINK OF THE CHILDREN is a satirical horror comic about the events leading to the original Comics Code Authority. The members of the Senate Subcommittee are secret monster hunters, seeking to destroy evil children, who they believe are corrupted by the stories of EC Comics. So that the story can reach as wide an audience as possible, the creators released it as a free webcomic in February of 2011 at http://comicsmakekidsevil.com.
THINK OF THE CHILDREN was created by Christian Sager (writer of the comic series BORDER CROSSINGS) and EC Steiner (sculptor/designer extraordinaire). THINK OF THE CHILDREN is designed for print publication, with plans for a handcrafted, hardbound, sculpted artifact book.
With the increasing popularity of digital comics, we want to create a physical book that the reader can treasure on their bookshelf. This book will have a unique tactile feel to it that you won't find anywhere else. We want this project to succeed to show the value of comics as graphic objects. THINK OF THE CHILDREN isn't just a fun, satirical horror comic about the medium's history. It's an artifact with a lot of care put into its construction. This isn't a mass-produced book we're sending to a printer in China. We want you to know that our hands have touched every component. Hours will go into each copy's production.
Funding from Kickstarter will pay for the print production of THINK OF THE CHILDREN, including:
- Hardbound 1/4" davey board covers set on cloth bound hinges.
- A sculpted resin seal embedded in the front cover.
- Interior printing on toothy Dur-O Tone, 70# Newsprint.
- Laser etched line art on the back cover.
- A color overlay in the middle of the book.
- An inside front cover book plate.
- An inside back cover library card and envelope, listing donors and those who assisted in production.

"An alternative history for the formation of the 1954 Comics Code Authority, one which sees horror-hooked children mutating into hideous, fleshy monsters — but still begs to ask, who's the real bad guy here? Art imitates life, and pokes fun at it." – Rue Morgue magazine
