When was the last time a comic book genuinely scared you?
Comics are a unique medium. They can control the rate of your suspense, the focus of your horror and the level of your dread. Creators of horror have always experimented with how we reveal the forbidden reflections of ourselves. Now nine of independent comics' unique creators have come together to frighten you with something new. CANAAN CULT REVIVAL is an attempt to use comic book storytelling to push those boundaries further still. A 64-page anthology of tales of exorcism and demonology, it's larger and longer than a traditional comic, reminiscent of the horror magazines of the 1970s. While the covers are brightly colored, the interior comics are all black and white.
CANAAN CULT REVIVAL is an explicit and graphic compilation of horror, designed to distress its readers. In fact, some creators who originally participated in the magazine had to withdraw when they were exposed to its subject matter. This isn't yet another retelling of the same witchcrafted demon possession you've come to know.
The creators bringing you this collection are as different as the comics within. Christian Sager is the writer of the historical horror graphic novel The Cabinet, as well as the EC Comics homage Think of the Children. He's joined by his frequent collaborators Kelly Williams (The Cabinet, Ego Tripp, Metaphase) and EC Steiner (Think of the Children) as well as several accomplished cartoonists. For instance, Drew Rausch is no stranger to horror, having illustrated Eldritch!, The Secrets of Sarah Winchester, Cthulhu Tales and Zombie Tales, as well as Edward Scissorhands, Sullen Grey and My Blacks Don't Match. Rafer Roberts is known for his explorations into madness with his Plastic Farm series and comic strip Nightmare the Rat. Other contributors include Rich Barrett (Nathan Sorry), Anthony Hightower (Gutwrencher, Negative Burn), Henry Eudy and Eraklis Petmezas (Last Cigarette, Mr. Lune).
CANAAN CULT REVIVAL is fully written, illustrated and lettered. This campaign will raise money to print and distribute the magazine, as well as paying all the artists for their contributions. If funded, the anthology will be released to its backers at the stroke of midnight on Halloween. Rewards for supporting the project include digital and print editions of the magazine, access to other comics by the creative team, original art by the creators and even papercraft monsters courtesy of EC Steiner's creature workshop.
Help us cross the limits of horror in comics, so we can bring this selection of demonic scares to you.
"The Flagellant:" (Art by Drew Rausch.) Kushiel the Wayfarer has punished Purgatory's residents for eternity. When a coven of wealthy socialites tries to bind him, it becomes Kushiel's turn to punish himself.
"Trial By Cauldron:" (Story & Art by EC Steiner.) Dissension in a coven of witches leads to one young woman to seek the terrible embrace of the demon Andras.
"Beestings:" (Art by Anthony Hightower.) Two young men are seduced and punished after they beat up a witch's son.
"By Proxy:" (Art by Eraklis Petmezas.) Frank Delaney decides to scare his son away from the occult by turning their home into a "hell house."
"The Never Event:" (Art by Henry Eudy.) As part of her initiation as a demon hunter, Luanne's father forces her to exorcise another teenage girl... or kill her trying.
"The Bully Pulpit:" (Art by Rich Barrett.) The deacon of a small religious school warns his students that one of their peers is possessed by a demon. To further his cause, he turns to diabolism and domestic abuse.
"Snow Blind:" (Art by Rafer Roberts.) Young Alia Siskin temporarily loses her vision. But the demon Beleth has plans for her... and her new puppy.
"The Resident:" (Art by Kelly Williams.) Joe checks out the same rare books from the local library everyday. When the head archivist confronts him, she learns a dark, demonic secret.
Risks and challenges
While CANAAN CULT REVIVAL is 100% written, drawn and lettered, some risk remains. We plan to send the book to be printed once the Kickstarter wraps up, but delays and errors can occur during the printing process. Likewise, delays and mistakes can occur while shipping the books (both from the printer to our HQ as well as from us to you).
Some of you may remember that my previous Kickstarter for THE CABINET had delays because of health issues the artist suffered. That is why this project has been completed BEFORE we launched the campaign. Even a coma can't stop us now!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
