We are thrilled to announce we have reached our initial target of 17K! We want to thank every single person who pledged or shared the campaign with their friends and family as we simply would not have been able to continue sharing these human stories without each and every one of you.
So with 7 days to go, what’s next?
Our Stretch Goal!
We have been keeping in touch with the amazing photographer from Humans Of Amsterdam, Debra, ever since we made a docobite about her and her own storytelling journey in September. We've been dreaming of the chance to collaborate, bringing photography, video and storytelling together in a joint project.
This stretch goal is this opportunity for us to team up to share some incredible human stories.
If we can reach this goal, starting in March next year, Humans Of Amsterdam will share 3 portraits a day and we will share 3 docobites, expanding on each human story captured. We will announce the location that we will be sharing these stories from in the coming weeks. This is a chance for the power and importance of storytelling to reach even more curious eyes and ears and we'd love for you to be a part of that.
Anything raised in addition to this 20k will be used to further expand this storytelling initiative.
Our Storytelling Story!
Now more than ever there's a strong need for storytelling. Storytelling provides an opportunity for prejudices, assumptions and judgments to fade because it is through storytelling that connections between people are made.
365 docobites (bite-sized documentaries) is an online documentary series that aims to help this breakdown of prejudices. We, the filmmaking team (Epiphany & Carl, "Hi!"), would like to work together with you to finish creating 365 documentaries in 365 days sharing Strangers' short and shorter stories.
It has been just the two of us on the road for the last 8 months and we've created 232 docobites (2-4 min short documentaries) so far, that's one every day! We have walked up to Strangers on the streets of the cites of the world - all through Australia, the USA, Canada, Iceland, the UK and vast areas of Europe - asking people we've never met, if they'd be willing to share something about themselves with the rest of the world. People of all different nationalities, ages, genders, sexualities, ethnicities, economic backgrounds and with varying perspectives. We, the 365 docobites team, believe everyone has a story worth listening to and for that reason we welcome absolutely anyone to participate.
We edit the short documentaries, grade, sound mix them and then post them online to share each Strangers' story with the 365 docobites online community via our purpose-built website www.365docobites.com and multiple social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo.
It's the next chapter of filming, the next 133 films, that your support is really going to make a difference with, as we simply can't make them without you.
Quitting is not an option for us. So far we've faced travel cancellations, crashed internet, hail storms, broken and stolen equipment, illness and even no bed to sleep in and we've still managed to release a film every day we've been on the road, because we believe in the work we're doing. Each film we share is a film we are proud of and one that says something about the world we live in. But we now need your help to accomplish the goal of reaching a total of 6 continents to share 365 stories.
We believe it is crucial to provide a well rounded and balanced perspective of people from all over the world. So over the next 4 months your support will allow us to share stories from South America, Africa, Asia and The Middle East, an additional 3 continents, in an even greater exploration of humanity today.
Each docobite is as unique as the Stranger it features allowing their identity to drive the story. Whether we’re with a Stranger for a moment or a day, 365 docobites captures the essence of that time in their life; humorous or horrific, dramatic or delightful. What do these people look like, what do they think about, what makes them laugh, cry, scream and shout, what is life like for the Strangers of the world?
The Storytelling Movement
We hope each docobite helps to facilitate a breakdown of fears, prejudices, cultural and religious barriers to overcome the dangerous and often hateful ignorance that seems to pervade each corner of the populated world. A daily dose of humanity to remind people that all humans, at our core, are very much the same.
365 docobites is an ever-expanding archive, a global census, a daily snapshot of life in different countries for one entire year, a storytelling/story-sharing hub where human stories inspire goodness in humanity.
It's all too easy to jump to assumptions about people. We started this project because we looked at how we judged people, that we didn't even know, and saw what that prejudice led to.
We wanted to do something about this negativity, we wanted to be a part of spreading a positive message of compassion and understanding and we believe storytelling is the perfect way to do this. So far it has just been the two of us, meeting and interviewing people everyday on the streets of the cities we visit, but we'd now like to expand the storytelling team, to you!
Why support us?
If you think compassion is important, if you think everyone has a story and it deserves to be heard, if you'd like to be a part of spreading a positive message or if you'd simply like to continue to receive a daily does of inspiration, then we at 365 docobites would like to invite you to be a part of a global movement, for humanity.
In just 7 months of filming 365 docobites has already been FEATURED IN...
Rewards for you!
We've got loads of great rewards up for grabs if you can get behind this project and movement. You can check out all the rewards on the right hand side of this page but here's a few of our favourites we just had to mention:
Based on our team's collective years of experience in film production, plus the knowledge gained from traveling and interviewing a stranger a day for the last 8 months, we have made an informed and comprehensive financial plan. This financial plan details exactly what it will take to produce the next 133 short documentaries of human stories from around the world.
It is important to note that the filmmaking team has never received financial compensation for the full-time, 232 days of work that we've completed so far. This will continue to be the case as the funds raised in this campaign will only go toward the expenses of travel to reach all the different people whose stories still need to be shared.
- Travel to South America, Asia, Africa & The Middle East to conduct 133 more interviews.
- Some accommodation costs (as the team will aim to secure sponsorship for as much accommodation as possible).
- Additional equipment expenses to continue to be able to share stories of cinematic quality.
Any additional funds raised will go towards the growth of the 365 docobites online platform, to enable more people to share stories with each other.
There’s a lot that goes into making each short documentary, and we’re confident that with a considerable amount of hard work, dedication and your support, we can create an entertaining and enlightning documentary series that will inspire a more compassionate world.
What else can I do to help?
Share this campaign on social media with your family and friends to help spread the word about 365 docobites and the importance of storytelling. We truly appreciate any support you have to offer, as every dollar pledged helps to make this dream a reality.
Risks and challenges
We're 232 films in and we've faced every challange so far with perseverance, sheer determination and success because we believe in the power of storytelling. We've let nothing prevent us from sharing a Stranger's story each and every day we've been on the road. You can count on us to continue sharing human stories, from around the world, that are full of heart. We'll keep you updated and involved all along the way with weekly articles and daily 'behind the scenes' photos because your support is not only important to us, but also to the Strangers whose stories we have, and will share.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
