About

FUNDING GOAL:

After five years of active filmmaking, including three years of shooting in remote Colombian villages, my first feature documentary WE WOMEN WARRIORS is nearing completion and will be premiered in 2011.

The WE WOMEN WARRIORS work-in-progress was screened as part of the Rough Cuts series at the Lab in San Francisco last November to an extremely positive audience. The editing is advancing and the evocative music by Colombian artist Jesus Quiñones helps set the film’s pace. We’ve raised 75 percent of the budget, and need $100,000 to complete this film with the best quality it deserves. Our goal right now is to raise at least $25,000 through Kickstarter to cover a substantial chunk of post-production costs to us move closer to the fine cut.

ABOUT THE FILM:

WE WOMEN WARRIORS follows three brave and remarkable native women in Colombia as they nonviolently defend their autonomy amid ongoing warfare. Colombia has 102 indigenous peoples that are caught in the crossfire between Latin America’s oldest guerrilla group and the army.

WE WOMEN WARRIORS gives a voice to these women whose lives hang in the balance of this Andean nation’s complicated drug war. Doris is a young mother who defends the vulnerable Awá population who grow coca leaves (the base for cocaine). Ludis, a spunky Kankuamo widow, tells us from inside prison how she was framed and captured on false charges of rebellion. Tiny in height but tremendous in spirit, Flor is the first female leader for the Nasa tribal government, where police barracks endanger civilians by placing them in the line of fire.

Like feminism, WE WOMEN WARRIORS is both personal and political. Despite her life being threatened after denouncing a massacre in her village, Doris does not abandon her tribal post. Once Ludis is freed she is able to move onward with her family even though systematic violence has swept through her region. Flor and her people put Colombia's constitutional indigenous autonomy into practice and strive towards creating a territory free of armed fighters.

WE WOMEN WARRIORS bears witness to human rights abuses, but the film's stories emphasize female empowerment, courage to move onward and faith in the survival of indigenous culture.

WHY THIS FILM NOW:

Recently the Colombian Constitutional Court declared that 32 of the country's indigenous groups are in danger of extinction. The armed conflict in Colombia remains a grossly under-reported issue that is sponsored by U.S. tax dollars. WE WOMEN WARRIORS transports us to the world of these three heroines who reveal their strength and wisdom when faced with constant warfare. Help celebrate the recent U.S. endorsement of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and ensure that the unknown voices of native women in Colombia be heard by a worldwide audience in WE WOMEN WARRIORS.

YOUR SUPPORT:

The $25,000 raised through Kickstarter will cover the costs of final editing, consulting editing, consulting producing, directing, music rights and the acquisition of archival footage.

OUR L.A.TEAM:

Currently some extremely talented editors and filmmakers are collaborating to make this documentary spectacular. They include Cristina Malavenda as Editor, Johanna Demetrakas, Carla Gutierrez & Kate Amend as Consulting Editors and Molly O'Brien and Sara Hutchison as Consulting Producers.
