This project was designed to develop and produce a photo-documentary book about immigrant communities in Philadelphia; The Cultural Fabric of Philadelphia.....An Intimate Look at Philadelphia's Immigrant Communities.
This photo book is intended to provide information, using creative photography, that allows for a better understanding of immigrants and their communities in Philadelphia......as well as any City with these immigrant communities.
However, this photo book is not intended to be "just a book". The ultimate purpose of this photo book is for it to play a role in broader community betterment programs for these immigrant communities.
For example, this photo book will help with meaningful meetings and presentations of the traditions and culture of an immigrant community, to both other immigrant communities as well as to the broader audience of American Philadelphians.
At this time, there is no similar publication about immigrant communities in Philadelphia. While there are statistical publications regarding immigration in Philadelphia, there is no current publication that presents and illustrates who and what these immigrant communities are.
The growing immigrant communities in the City are contributing greatly to not only Philadelphia's economy, but also its culture. This photo book will tell the story of these contributions to the cultural fabric of Philadelphia.
I use #PhillyCultural to post ongoing photo's for this project on Instagram.
We all are aware of the current immigration issue and debate in this country. However, one critical item is missing from this debate....facts. It is easy to criticize what you don't understand. Understanding immigrant communities will help people make more informed decisions about this topic.
This photo book project does just this.....it provides information. Our project team hopes that this photo book will help support the national and local conversation about immigration.
It should be noted that, while this photo book was made for Philadelphia immigrant communities, it can be useful for other cities that have these same immigrant communities. So wherever you are, the facts presented in this photo book will also hold for these immigrant communities in your city.
This project is much more than Lakatos Photography. Each immigrant community in the book had one or two community "coordinators". These people directed the project for their community (e.g. which situations or events best illustrated the community for photographs). So this project is entirely community-based.
The entire project team, including the community coordinators and their affiliations, consists of:
Chinese - Stephanie Sun, Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, Project Coordinator
Chinese - Michael Chow, Community Advocate and Entrepreneur (Sang Kee Restuarants)
Dominican - Dante Sanchez, Casa Dominicana, Director
Dominican - Pedro Rodriguez, City of Philadelphia, Director of Human Resources

The Photo Book Itself
The final photo book will be 10 x 8 inches, horizontal format with approximately 90 pages. It will include approximately 4-5 pages of "front end" text for a Prologue (by the Mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney) and an overview of the immigration issue today in the City of Philadelphia. This will then be followed by sections for each of the six communities, which will consist of large photos and captions.
A sample book has been prepared that illustrates how this final product will eventually look. Please take a look at this sample book here:

The goal for this Kickstarter Campaign is $5,000. The project budget shown above is larger than our stated goal. This goal was determined more by Kickstarter rules than our total project need, in that Kickstarter proceeds are only provided to projects that meet their stated goal.
It is hoped that your donation total will allow us to produce this photo book based on our budget listed above. Any funding that exceeds our project cost will be used to print book copies so as many people as possible can have the benefit and value of this very timely publication.
Risks and challenges
We believe that, after 2 1/2 years of work on this project that could involve "risk" (e.g. a community deciding that they no longer want to participate in the project), the completion of this project is now not risk prone.
The schedules reflect a solid understanding by all of the project participants for necessary due dates and all have committed to meeting them.
All project production costs have been rechecked, as have the printing and shipping schedules. We have also developed the schedule knowing fully of the delays that occur in China (book printing will be done in China) during February because of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
