Unearth Women: The 1st Travel Magazine For Women, By Women

Women around the world, across industries, are making their voices heard. Yet, in the travel space, the industry is still male-dominated. Women make up more than 70% of the travel consumer base, yet most travel publications are founded and edited by men. At the same time, many female-led stories are eclipsed within the travel space at a time when ladies are pushing back on the patriarchy. The inspiration for Unearth Women Magazine is to create a female-driven print magazine that not only champions female writers but shares the stories of women globally.

Some of the incredible stories in the first issue include...

The money raised by this Kickstarter campaign and your generous donations will go towards:

  • Paying the writers and photographers a fair price for their work.
  • The layout and design of the first issue.
  • The printing and distribution of the first Unearth Women Magazine issue.

Meet Nikki Vargas

Nikki Vargas is a journalist and editor with a background in digital marketing and advertising. Starting out her career at HAVAS Media, Nikki worked on digital media campaigns for clients that include Volvo, Mexico Tourism, LVMH, and Dannon, before moving over to FOOD & WINE magazine as Digital Marketing Manager.

Throughout her career, Nikki worked as a freelance journalist in tandem with launching her own travel and lifestyle blog, The Pin the Map Project. Her past bylines have appeared on Vice, Roads & Kingdoms, HuffPost and more. Eventually deciding to switch career paths from advertising to editorial, Nikki began working as a contributing Staff Writer at The Daily Meal before joining Culture Trip as Travel Editor in their newly opened NYC office.

Today, Nikki is launching her latest endeavor, Unearth Women, which she is Co-Founder and Editorial Director of. Unearth Women is an answer to the sexism that exists in the travel industry.

Meet Kelly Lewis

Kelly Lewis owns the women's travel space. As an independent entrepreneur, Kelly is the Founder of Go! Girl Guides, a guidebook company for women. Kelly is also the Founder of Damesly, a tour company for professional and creative women, and the annual Women’s Travel Fest, a sold-out consumer travel event for women who love to travel.

Kelly is a writer, a dreamer and an avid traveler. Originally from Hawaii, Kelly lived in New Zealand for a year before traversing through South America and the South Pacific. She launched Go! Girl Guides in late 2010 after the idea came to her in a dream.

Meet Elise Fitzsimmons

Elise Fitzsimmons is a development professional with a passion for human connection and new experiences. Membership Director for a public radio station in Aspen, Colorado, Elise wears many hats. She is responsible for the acquisition over one million dollars in individual contributions, donor relations and membership maintenance, marketing, and event planning. She intends to bring her prior experience and dedication to Unearth Women so that women everywhere have a dedicated platform to share their stories and be seen.

An avid traveler, Elise's lust for adventure has taken her scuba diving in Egypt, biking in Cambodia, karaoke singing in North Korea, and many places in-between. When stateside you can find her hiking around the rockies, taking advantage of the national park system, and devouring audiobooks.

Meet Kae Lani Kennedy

While some travelers follow their hearts, Kae Lani follows her gut. In addition to working as a travel writer, photographer, and videographer for USA Today 10Best, Kae Lani is also the co-creator of their newest venture, Eat Sip Trip. Obsessed with the history and origin of food, she explores the intricate and sometimes peculiar backstories of dishes around the world. Her quest for cuisine has taken her from exploring the Spice Route in Israel to searching for the Geisha coffee bean in Panama. She has shared her love of food and travel on live broadcasts and has appeared as a guest on Cheddar TV and NASDAQ. Kae Lani's motto: Life is too short to live anything but deliciously.

Risks and challenges

With any new publication, there is a challenge to build a following. With years of travel writing, editing, and blogging experience, I am excited to pour everything I have learned into creating Unearth Magazine!

Over the years I have cultivated connections in the travel industry, a network of excellent female travel writers and photographers and a following of over 100,000 monthly readers on my blog. I will leverage all of this to build Unearth Magazine from the ground up.
