About

Women around the world, across industries are making their voices heard. Yet, in the travel space, the industry is still male-dominated. From the male-centric hosts on television to the oft-male dominated travel publications, many talented female journalists and photographers fight for a byline. At the same time, many female-led stories are eclipsed within the travel space at a time when ladies are pushing back on the patriarchy.

The inspiration for Unearth Magazine is to create a female-driven print magazine that not only champions female writers but shares the stories of women.

The money raised by this Kickstarter campaign and your generous donations will go towards:

  • Paying the writers and photographers a fair price for their work.
  • The layout and design of the first issue.
  •  The printing of the first Unearth Magazine issue.

Tier 1 - $25

Tier 2 - $50

Tier 3 - $100

Tier 4 - $200

Meet Nikki Vargas

Nikki Vargas is the Founding Editor of the digital travel site, The Pin the Map Project, and the former Travel Editor of Culture Trip. As a Freelance Journalist, her bylines have appeared on VICE, FOOD & WINE, Roads & Kingdoms, INSIDER Travel and The Huffington Post, covering an array of topics including travel, politics, food, and lifestyle.

Nikki is also a public speaker within the travel space, having spoken at The New York Times Travel Show, the Women's Travel Fest, the New York Travel Fest, the Women in Travel Summit, and as a guest on Cheddar TV and NPR Weekend Edition.

Meet Kelly Lewis

Kelly Lewis is the Founder of Go! Girl Guides, a writer, a dreamer and an avid traveler. Originally from Hawaii, Kelly lived in New Zealand for a year before traversing through South America and the South Pacific. She launched Go! Girl Guides in late 2010 after the idea came to her in a dream.

Kelly is also the founder of the annual Women’s Travel Fest, a sold-out consumer travel event for women who love to travel. She also founded Damesly, a tour company for professional and creative women.

Meet Elise Fitzsimmons

Based out in Aspen, Colorado, Elise is the current Membership Director of Aspen Public Radio. As Membership Director, Elise is tasked with fundraising for APR. Elise is also an avid traveler with an entrepreneurial spirit, having traversed the globe from Puerto Rico to Cambodia, making connections and finding stories along the way.

Meet Kae Lani Kennedy

While some travelers follow their hearts -- Kae Lani follows her gut. In addition to working as a travel writer, photographer, and videographer for USA Today 10Best, Kae Lani is also the co-creator of their newest venture, Eat Sip Trip. Obsessed with the history and origin of food, she explores the intricate and sometimes peculiar backstories of dishes around the world. Her quest for cuisine has taken her from exploring the Spice Route in Israel to searching for the Geisha coffee bean in Panama. She has shared her love of food and travel on live broadcasts and has appeared as a guest on Cheddar TV and NASDAQ. Kae Lani's motto: Life is too short to live anything but deliciously.

Risks and challenges

With any new publication, there is a challenge to build a following. With years of travel writing, editing, and blogging experience, I am excited to pour everything I have learned into creating Unearth Magazine!

Over the years I have cultivated connections in the travel industry, a network of excellent female travel writers and photographers and a following of over 100,000 monthly readers on my blog. I will leverage all of this to build Unearth Magazine from the ground up.
