For those who don’t know, schizophrenia is, overall, a truly horrific disease. There is no known cure and each case is different from the rest. People with the disorder often experience harassment from visual and auditory hallucinations that make everyday tasks impossible. It can only be described as one thing; torture. What’s even worse? Most people have no idea what it is.
We live in a society where entertainment is everywhere. Because of this, the movie industry is arguably the most influential power on Earth. So what better way is there to bring attention and awareness to a mental disease like schizophrenia than merging it with a medium like film?
“REAL” is the idea that resulted from months and months of research about the disorder: a visually stunning feature-length psychological thriller that is entirely a metaphor for schizophrenia. I’m not gonna sugar coat it: this film will be dark, but the disease is much darker. I truly believe and hope that this film will raise awareness as to what schizophrenia is, especially in the younger generation, and in turn, help people to recognize the symptoms.
When the wealthy Fisher family’s private jet crashes on the shore of a small island, they struggle to survive with limited resources and the threat of a mysterious animal on the island. On top of this, Andrew, the youngest Fisher child, finds himself torn between his family and a hallucination that causes him to question what’s real and what’s not. Will the family survive? Will Andrew let his hallucination get the better of him? Find out in “REAL”, an independent feature film by Jackson Oehmler.
Andrew - Andrew is the film’s main protagonist. He is 15 years old, and is the third child of the wealthy Fischer family.
Claire - Claire is Andrew’s mother and the wife of Calum Fischer, an heir of the Fischer family fortune and the CEO of Fischer Enterprises.
Calum - As mentioned before, Calum is an heir to the Fischer family fortune and the CEO of Fischer Enterprises, an investment banking company. He rarely spends time with his family and is always off on business trips. He has brought his family along with him on a trip to Nova Scotia in an attempt to connect with them. They are flying back to New York when their plane crashes.
Leo - Leo is Andrew’s 21 year old brother. He is alternative and artsy, a typical hipster. Andrew looks up to him, for the most part, and respects that he wants to be different and shies away from the family.
Anna - Anna is Andrew’s 16 year old sister. She comes across as mean and rude at first but hides a soft, sensitive side.
Henry - Henry is the Fischer family dog, a golden retriever mostly taken care of by Andrew. He is definitely Andrew’s best friend, as they spend a large amount of time together.
Seven - Seven is Andrew’s alter ego. He is the hallucination that Andrew begins to see on the island. He is faceless, wears a business suit and can blend into his surroundings representing Andrew’s need to fit in. He is cruel, rude and a negative influence on Andrew, convincing him that his family is out to get him.
The funds from this Kickstarter will be broken up into four categories:
- 1) Equipment - To make the film look professional and have vivid colors, the right equipment is needed. $1000 dollars of our budget will go towards renting cinema cameras, lenses, self-stabilizing rigs, and SSD cards for the best quality picture.
- 2) Props - To give the film an authentic feel and look, $1500 dollars of our budget will go towards makeup, costumes, and props to enhance our actor's performances.
- 3) Rewards - $500 dollars will go towards the rewards given out for donating to the campaign.
- 3) Fees and other - To shoot on location and reserve areas for our personal use as well as pay other shipping taxes, $1000 dollars will be set aside to use when needed.
Throughout the months of March, April, May, and June, we will be revising the script and casting our characters accordingly as well as meeting to discuss scheduling and rehearse before we shoot. Come July, we will spend 10-15 days shooting at local beaches and parks. From August to November, the film will be edited and scored to be sent into different film festivals around the country.

Risks and challenges
There are few risks and challenges that come with this project. With a relatively low goal of $3500 in comparison to other Kickstarter projects, this movie is more of a glorified student film. To shoot a feature-length film in under 20 days is ambitious, but with the right amount of passion and drive it can easily be done as well as make a large impact on the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
