It's been nearly 5 years since the release of my last solo record. In that time I've toured 41 States (near as I can tell) as well as 13 countries throughout Europe, tirelessly. I released a duo record with John Statz (12 August) which we recorded in Denver while on tour there in 2014. That year also saw the release of The Attic Session which is a duo record that I recorded with my good friend/co-conspirator Blake Thomas in 2013. Blake's name will come up again...just you wait. Heck, I even recorded an EP (SEE REWARDS!) in the Czech Republic with George Lucas. A different George Lucas.
Miles and miles, and miles. I've been wildly fortunate to be able to travel and play music around the world since I was 5 years old. I've met more amazing people than I can count. I've shared stages with heroes and I've met the salt of the Earth and for every bit, I'm grateful. Grateful for the experience and even more so for the friendships music has given me. That's the real reason to keep on, holding on. I once heard that music is the universal language and from what I know, that is truth.
This record was a long time in the making. A friend told me that it's hard to write when you're riding on the wind and I'll be damned if that's not true. But, time was found and the songs were written. Atlanta, Bushwick, Florida, Kansas City, Washington, England, Wisconsin and a train somewhere in Germany - varied locations but they all kept a familiar personality. They're honest and real.
ROUND AND ROUND
We recorded Holding On over the course of a week at DNA Music Labs in beautiful Madison, WI in early October 2015. I'd been talking with Blake Thomas for a while about this record and after three or four minutes of "serious" business talk we decided we could make it happen. I mean hell, after that many Tuesday nights playing Honky Tonk Tuesday together at Mickey's, that many miles in a beaten Subaru through Wyoming blizzards and July tours without AC in an old Nissan, we were sure we could do this.
And we made the BEST record I've made yet!
We recorded the drums, bass, acoustic guitar, and vocals live! All together. The playing order on the record is the order in which we recorded them. The final song on the record ("English Rain") wasn't a song until the day we recorded it. It wasn't finished until 5 minutes before we recorded and what you hear is the first take! We were looking for energy and more importantly tone and feel... and that's what we found.
I'm so excited for you to hear this record, but I need your help!
I want your friends to hear this record. I want your family to hear this record. I want your third cousin twice removed (and maybe slightly estranged) to hear this record! I want to put the word in the streets!
Making and releasing a record like this is an expensive endeavor, and I'd love your help in seeing it through. The amount that I'm asking for is only a portion of what the actual final costs amount to. Here is where your help puts Holding On across the finish line!
Budget and Costs:
$7,000: This amount will help cover STUDIO, MUSICIANS, MASTERING
$2,500: This amount will help cover a PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN
$500: This amount goes to Kickstarter and to Amazon
As for the costs associated with fulfilling the rewards (around 20% of the money raised) and the IRS, I'll play a few extra shows.
I have all the wheels set to be in motion and I look forward to sending you all the updates!
In advance. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
