“Sometimes the truth is not what we think it is. Sometimes the lies are true. One never knows. Sometimes it is the least believable tale that holds the most truths.
Sometimes the people we trust, cannot be trusted. Listen to your own instincts. For within can be found the greatest answer to any question. Seek your path. Listen to your heart!”
Priest Byakko Notes
Welcome to Tochi-Kowareta, the broken lands. A world of great beauty and mystery, this was a great continent once, before it was sundered and broken by a mad man. His thirst for power upset the natural balance. The world in which you live is still beautiful, but is now fraught with danger.
The Ancients, spirits that rule over the land, sea, animals, and more, have existed since the beginning. They have always maintained a balance. Since the beginning, the priests of the Ancients have served them and cared for their needs. Maintaining the balance was the priests only purpose.
Then there are people that seek to upend that balance for the power they seek. Amagan was one of those who nearly succeeded. His thirst for power corrupted him. Striving to separate the very powers of the Ancients themselves from them. He had learned that the Ancients themselves are not the source of the power. Inside each of them lives a heart that contains the power, and that if that heart is taken from the Ancient it will destroy the Ancient. Then if that heart is then placed inside of someone it imbues its new host with all of that Ancient's power. Amagan also learned that the spirits who are the children of the Ancients are given small pieces of these hearts as well. Upon discovering this he had destroyed two of the Ancient's servants and taken their hearts before his plan was uncovered.
The Ancients had gathered a small group of warriors who sought out Amagan, tried to kill him, and return the hearts to the Ancients to stop his sinister plot. They fought bravely, but in the end had all perished, save one, a priest of Yama, Byakko. Amagan was believed to have been destroyed, but in truth, no one knew for sure. For centuries rumors have spread, but nothing conclusive has surfaced
You and your friends are faithful servants to the Ancients. You have been summoned this evening by Priest Byakko. For what purpose? Only the priest and the Ancients know.
Throughout this adventure you will be using your skills to save your lands from those who seek to destroy the Ancients and take control of the elements themselves. They seek the knowledge that Amagan the Destroyer discovered. Perhaps they already have it.
Others cannot be allowed to do what Amagan did. His actions during his quest for power caused horrific consequences. Some spirits, children of the Ancients, no longer have a connection to the Ancients and thus have no connection to the world. As such these spirits have turned from preserving the world to its destruction.
You know that if you have been summoned, it is for a task of great import. Your mission will not be an easy one. But if you succeed, you will receive great rewards from the Ancients as well as the priests themselves.
Discover the lands and occupants of Tochi Kowareta. Discover the truth. Bring the spirits back to their parents. Therein lies your greatest challenge. Well, that and surviving to do it!
With your help, this roleplaying game module, the first for the Universal Storytelling System and the first in an overarching storyline series, can be made real.
The first item that is needed is a custom cover. While the front page is good, we want a cover that really depicts what this module is about. We have an artist that can bring that out.
The second item is the printing. The ancient parchment background and beautiful art really pop off the page, but this means it needs to be printed in full color.
Both of these are expensive, but with all of your help, the Flower of Heaven module can be published.
The Universal Storytelling System
Now in its second edition that was released at Origins in June 2018, this roleplaying game system, developed by me, emphasizes character and story over combat. The core rules do not have a set world. The system is flexible enough to handle any genre or genre mash that you and your friends want to run. You can take intergalactic ponies to a fantasy realm with no trouble.
Characters primarily use skills in order to accomplish tasks, including combat. The system uses a standard playing card deck to determine if a character is able to accomplish what they set out to do. You count up each 8-K in your draw as successes. Any Aces take away successes and Jokers are wild. They can just be 1 success, add 3 more successes, or take away 4 successes depending on what the top card of your deck is. More information can be found on the Palegain Press website.
Flower of Heaven: Shrine of the Fallen Heroes is written, edited, and laid out. All NPCs and pregenerated characters are complete and included in the appendices. It is 79 pages at 8.5 x 11.
All tiers come with either a digital or physical version of the second edition rules for the Universal Storytelling System.
Risks and challenges
Since the project is basically complete, aside from the cover art and printing, there is a very low probability of complete failure. As I have worked with a couple of printers over the several editions of Universal Storytelling System, I have a backup in case my first choice does not work out. However, since I have successfully used that printer for two projects, I do not foresee any issues.
I am working with an artist I have not worked with before, but that artist has done work with major publishers before. So I am confident that she will complete this project. But, like any good tech guy, I have backups who I have worked with before, in case the unforeseen happens.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
