June 22 and 23, 2018 - Brentwood Drury - Brentwood, MO
Fear the Con is a gaming convention that takes place at the Drury Hotel in Brentwood, MO. We take over the two large ballrooms, a small meeting room, and a "board room" for two days of gaming fun. While all types of tabletop games are played, roleplaying games make up the bulk of what is run.
For 8 years, Fear the Boot, an RPG podcast ran the convention as a means for their fans to get together and game. By the 8th convention, the hosts needed a break and with their blessing, we took over. After running "DruCon" in place of Fear the Con 9 and after Fear the Con 10, we are confident in our convention format.
Fear the Con is the "Family reunion that you want to go to". While we love seeing old friends, we make extra effort to welcome new gamers into the fold. We play everything from D&D and Pathfinder to Fate and Dread. As well as new Kickstarted systems like Pugmire.
So after 10 years, why the Kickstarter?
When we took over the convention, we decided to reformat the convention and focus on growth. DruCon was our first trial of the concept. Fear the Con 10 built on that into a full blown convention. We learned a lot from Fear the Con 10. Especially about the finances of a full convention. And we are still learning. While there are changes from last year, there are not as many as there were from DruCon to Fear the Con 10. Figuring out a stable long term sustainability plan will be in the near future.
But the convention must:
- Be free for the attendees
- Focus on tabletop gaming
- Be Indie game (meaning new developer and small design shop) friendly
- Keep the friendly and accepting vibe the convention has now
To fully understand, it must be experienced. So even if you cannot pledge, please join us for all the fun.
Mikey Mason - Geek Comedy Rock Star
A Fear the Con staple, Mikey Mason will be back again this year. But, this time, as part of the base package. We fund. We get Mikey. For those who are unaware, he is a fan boy, funny, and awesome. If you need more detail (from his website):
Mikey Mason is a comedy monster. A naughty cartoon character. An experiment gone wonderfully wrong. He explodes onstage with unfathomable energy, relentlessly pounding away at his audience with a wit as fast as his mouth, infectiously hilarious original songs, and his completely twisted world view. He's the psycho stalker ex-boyfriend of comedy, except that you want to see him again. And again. And again.
Please check out the pledge levels and rewards to the right. Any options or additions will go under this heading.
Adding VIP to Live-Streamed games and Bob's Consultation:
If you want to add the VIP tier to the Live-Stream game or Bob's Consultation, pledge at the the Live-Stream or Bob's Consultation level. Then add $50 to that pledge for a total of $150. (NOTE: VIP cannot be added to the Official Attendee level)
Adding Badges to the Vendor Tier:
The Vendor tier comes with 2 vendor badges. Each vendor badge beyond the first two is $20 each.
The base goal to run the convention is $6,000. This figure is based off of last year's financial numbers. Last year the organizers had to pay out of pocket to make up the deficit in order to put the convention on. We are looking to run the convention at a zero loss. Any excess will go to next year.
So we are doing something a little different this year. We have a list of stretch goals ready to go, but we are revealing them as previous goals are met.
$6800: Pizza for Friday and Saturday lunch (for an extra fee) and a printed program that includes food options
$7400: Better art for the badges and artists will be paid
$12,100: Okay, fine, we'll do the big reveal.... If we get this far (and we'll have to go bananas go get there, but that has happened before!), we'll bring out the One Shot RPG podcast guys! They'll record their podcast live at the convention, not to mention run and play games with we mere mortals! Let's do this!
--More stretch goals to be revealed when previous ones are met--
Risks and challenges
One of the amazing things about Fear the Boot and Fear the Con is the sense of community that has sprung up in the last ten years and the amount of diligence and support the community has shown over the years. Without the support of the community, there is no Fear the Boot and, in a very real way, there is no Fear the Con. That is right friends -- without at least a bare-bones commitment, there can be no Fear the Con this year -- something we'd like to avoid if at all possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
