About this project
Our project is all about you telling your story. But before that can happen, we have to tell ours, so here goes...
Between my husband and I, we've been playing Dungeons and Dragons for nigh on forty years. We love getting our friends together for a day of saving towns and thwarting evil villains. There's nothing better than a knock-down, drag-out fight with some big bad meanies taking us to the brink of death. Tom is our god-like GM and my job is to chronicle our adventures in the voice of my character - whoever that happens to be at the time.
Over the years we've amassed quite a pile of sad, dog-eared notebooks full of spectacular, epic adventures. It occurred to me not long ago, that I'd like something more befitting the grandeur of our stories to hold these adventures. Something that gave me space for sketching characters, mapping encounters. Something I could put the name of our adventure on and keep track of who joined us and what sort of treasure we discovered. In short, I wanted a journal specifically for gaming.
"I can do that," I thought to myself. And so I did. Twice.
Well, it helped that I already had in mind something to use for the cover. I'm an artist and last September we did a kickstarter to fund my D&D inspired artwork. A map of Silicon Valley done in Lord of the Rings style - Silidor Valley. Check out that kickstarter project here.
So I went through CreateSpace and created the book I would have bought, had it been available. And I like the original so well, I did another, twice as long.
Our Adventure Journal is a 50 page, 8 by 10 inch paperback. The cover is matte so that it is easy to write the name of your latest epic journey. The first page is dedicated to basic info, who was GMing your quest, who chronicled the events, who were the players and party members, what was the set up for the story... On the next page is plenty of space to keep track of items and treasure you find along the way. You can enter the date at the top of each page. There are spaces every few page where you can draw, write notes, or paste pictures and in the back you'll have five grids for mapping the high point.
The Gamer's Journal is the same, except longer, coming in at 100 pages.
Like I said, I did it. The books are done and actually on Amazon for sale. We are also selling them on our website www.urbanrealms.com. But currently they are only Print On Demand. Tom and I would like your help to print out 250 copies of each. A few of those will go toward preserving our own adventures for posterity. The rest we plan to sell to gaming stores, bookstores and at gaming conventions. (We're already signed up for a vendor table at Pacificon.)
By backing our kickstarter you'll get the books for less than retail price. You can also choose to receive one of our Silidor Valley maps which are 18 by 24 inches and printed on high quality vellum paper. Or you can opt for a set of 4 bookmarks - close-ups of the map laminated, and decorated with a ribbon. The backs of the bookmarks contain a handy dandy cheat sheet with important page numbers from the players' handbooks for different game systems - D& D 3.5, Pathfinder, or 4th edition - your choice.
We also have a set of greeting cards done with closeups of the map. The cards come in a set of 8 with envelopes. Three cards showing the San Francilieth area, two of the Peninsula, two of the East Bay and three of the South Bay.
At the 50 dollar level we will send you a 100 page journal with the name of your upcoming adventure on the cover and the first page. We'll include the names of the GM, players and their characters, and the chronicler inside. The rest is for you to fill out as you adventure.
No matter what level you back us at, we'll send you info on how to download images of the map for a screensaver.
Printing the journals will cost $1,100.00 and CreateSpace will charge us an additional shipping cost of $275.00. The rest will go toward the table at Pacificon and toward creating, packing, and shipping your rewards.
So if you're ready to tell your story with style and panache, let us know. Back our journal and receive some great rewards!
We're now offering a CONgames Journal as an add on! Just add $10.00 to your pledge to receive this along with your other items.
No gaming convention is complete without a Convention Games Journal - CONgames. This 75 page journal helps you keep track of 11 RPGs and 10 board games. You can write the name and year of the convention or conventions on the cover and Keep track of:
- The name of the game you played
- Game system
- Who makes it, where to get it
- Pros and Cons of the game
- A five star rating system
- Who GMed and their contact info
- Your character
- Other characters, players and their contact info
- Four pages for game notes with spots for item, sketches, and grids for maps
- Two pages at the end for extra notes.
Don't leave home without it!
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk is that you won't click!
Most of the challenges for this project have already been met. The designs took many iterations and four proofs to get right. The personalized Special Edition journals will be time consuming, but they should not be difficult. CreateSpace is a recognized and professional publisher so I don't anticipate any problems with getting our journals shipped.
