We want to bring a cat cafe to St. Louis!
Coffee. Cats. Snuggling. A place where YOU GET TO HANG OUT WITH CATS AND DRINK COFFEE! The absolute BEST part about this is that the cats in the cafe will be adoptable!
The cats in the cafe will be exposed to a lot of potential adopters that they wouldn’t otherwise get to meet. This increases adoption rates dramatically, which in turn opens up more spots for cats that need help.
Why would you come to a cat cafe?
- love cats, but partner is allergic
- not allowed to have pets in home/apartment
- don't have time to take care of pets, but need snuggles
- visiting St. Louis and homesick for your kitties
- you require the magic only a room full of cats provides!
Even if you have a cat, getting to experience a large number of cats in one space is something special that we want every animal lover to experience.
DID WE MENTION YOU GET TO HANG OUT WITH CATS?!
We want MAUHAUS to be the best possible experience for everyone and in order for that to happen we need help. We have a lot of big ideas and we can’t do this alone.
We are self funding a large portion of the cafe startup cost. Your pledges will help get us the rest of the way there.
Here is a detailed breakdown of how the money will be able to help us! Plus STRETCH GOALS!
Rewards for everyone. We've carefully selected great rewards for all budgets. Whether you're looking for physical goods and exclusive merch, or more experiential rewards, we have great options for everyone.

- Press the ‘Manage Your Pledge’ Button at the top of the page. If you have not pledged yet the button will say ‘Back this Project’.
- Increase your pledge in the ‘Pledge Amount’ box by the total of the items you want to add.
- When the Kickstarter campaign ends you will receive a survey that will ask you questions so that you can explain how you would like the add-on money assigned.
In order to give the cats time to adjust, we'll approach our opening in phases. We're excited to give YOU our Kickstarter backers several opportunities to be among the first people in the cafe!
Check out our TIMELINE:
We already have a space. Our floorplans are done. We have been working with the city of Maplewood closely to make sure we are meeting all necessary codes and ordinances. They have been incredibly welcoming to us and we are so grateful to them.
We've done a handful of events with Tenth Life Cat Rescue and with the City of Maplewood. We've also partnered with LaCosecha Coffee and Traveling Tea. We've been experimenting with lots of recipes and have a great menu lined up!
We've been devoted to this project for the past year and we've been working hard behind the scenes to make it a reality. Your support invigorates us and we're happy to have YOU, our fans, as part of this process.
We envision MAUHAUS as a place for people to go where they can be themselves. Cats don’t care how much money you make or what kind of music you listen to. There is no one to impress, so be completely you!
MAUHAUS will be unlike any cafe you've ever been to - and not just because of the cats! We're dedicated to offering unique food and beverages from around the globe. You'll find offerings in MAUHAUS that you just won't see in most cafes. We've spent the last year perfecting recipes and experimenting with new ideas.
Not only will we have an adventurous menu, we'll also make sure we accommodate our vegan and gluten-free friends too!
We began talking with the health department really early on so that we knew this was going to be possible. The way that the space will be kept safe and clean is by separating the cafe and the lounge. The two spaces will be separated by a double door system. No cats will ever enter the cafe. We will also have an air filtration system in place to make sure the air is properly circulated and clean.
Our top priority is making sure that the cats have a safe and comfortable environment to live in. Not only does this mean that there will be a lot of different vertical spaces and cat walks for the cats, this also means having enough spaces for the cats to go when they don’t feel up for socialization.
Risks and challenges
Starting a cafe is already a risk. Starting one with cats is an even bigger risk. This business model is so new and unexplored that we will be learning a lot as we go. We know that with the community support we can make MAUHAUS a success.
When beginning a business from scratch, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. Here are the things we’ve thought of, and how we would deal with them.
Construction could take more time or money than planned. This is common, and we’re prepared to get a bank loan if needed to finish construction. This is also why we haven’t announced a specific opening date yet!
Health department issues. We’re doing everything we can to be proactive here, but some things just don’t come up until they can see the space. We’ll be working to get them in as soon as possible, and we’ll be building out the kitchen before the rest of the space.
Staffing. Staffing a restaurant is often a challenge. We also don’t know how busy we’ll be in the first few months. We’ve secured a few core team members that have already been helping us with some of the important decisions and we’re excited to meet many of you who have expressed interest in working with us.
The Kickstarter could fail :( This is always a possibility when running a Kickstarter. We are dedicated to this project and we would continue on without the funding. The Kickstarter failing would severely decrease our available funds. It would also tell us that there may not be a very big audience in St. Louis. As a result, we would pilot the cafe as a very scaled down version of what we have planned.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
