Star Fruit is Gretta Johnson's debut comic book. A RISD graduate with a background in animation, Gretta is a promising new talent who has used watercolor, ink, and a dip pen to tell a surreal story in 32 technicolor pages. Star Fruit stars a nude woman and her cat, both on a strange journey in which they encounter a witch and a magical fruit.
Gretta originally printed a limited edition of just 50 copies of Star Fruit. Robyn Chapman at Paper Rocket Minicomics has stepped up to bring the book back into print, and introduce it to a larger audience.
Paper Rocket will re-publish Star Fruit as an oversized (8.5"x11") full-color comic. We are raising $400 to cover the initial printing cost. A portion of the proceeds will also go towards the author's fee (Paper Rocket pays a modest fee to its authors for their solo books).
This Kickstarter campaign will end right before the Small Press Expo opens in Bethesda, Maryland. If you back this project and attend SPX, you don't have to wait for your copy in the mail—you can pick it up at the Paper Rocket Minicomics table. Gretta will be attending the show, so you can even get your copy signed!
Risks and challenges
Paper Rocket has already published two comics this year, both funded by Kickstarter campaigns. Robyn has years of experience publishing handcrafted comics, and she is completely confident she'll be successful in delivering Star Fruit.
For her part, Gretta has already finished the book. All that remains is the publishing. And with a little financial kick, you can help that happen.
