About this project

This fall will be Paper Rocket's most ambitious season yet! In fact, it's the first time that I've thought about "seasons" in regards to my publishing. I'm releasing three handmade items which are available individually or in a discounted bundle.

Limp Wrist

by Scout Wolfcave and Penina Gal

16 pages, full color, 5.5" x 8.5"

Limp Wrist is the story of a woman looking back at her childhood, and her memories of growing up misgendered and being bullied for acting feminine. It was written by Scout Wolfcave and adapted and drawn by Penina Gal. It's being published for the first time in full-color.

Untitled print

by Preston Spurlock

3-color screen print on 110 lb. archival paper, 9" x 12"

Preston Spurlock is an animator, illustrator, and a musician. For the past six months, Preston and Robyn have shared the studio space that Paper Rocket calls home. The studio will close in September but we're collaborating on one last project before they kick us out.

Prints will be signed and numbered, and limited to just 150.

The Tiny Report: Micro-Press Yearbook 2013

by Robyn Chapman (cover by Chuck Forsman)

16 pages, black & white with a Risograph cover and centerfold, 5.5" x 8.5"

The Tiny Report endeavors to chronicle the comics micro-press movement, and the Micro-Press Yearbook is its annual report. This publication includes a list of over 60 micro-publishers, and data from 40 of those is compiled into charts and graphs. Robyn Chapman has summarized her findings in a detailed yet concise essay.

My goal is to raise $700, which will allow me to do the following:

  • Cover my artist payments to Scout and Penina
  • Cover the printing costs of the first run of Limp Wrist and the Micro-Press Yearbook
  • Cover the material costs of screen printing

Rewards will start shipping in September!

You never have to wait long with a Paper Rocket Kickstarter! We're aiming to have all three items available at this year's Small Press Expo! If we do, attendees can pick up their rewards at our table.

SPLIT THE TIPS! My new policy to share more funds with the artists

The cost of each of my rewards is equal the retail price of the item, plus shipping and handling. That's why I call this a "pre-order campaign," not a "fundraising campaign." I'm not asking for more than the fair cost of the goods I'm delivering. For me, Kickstarter is a distribution method, and it's the most successful one available to me.

BUT, one of the differences between Kickstarter and any other pre-order mechanism is Kickstarter allows you to pay above and beyond the reward price. Basically, it allows you to "tip." And people do it! All the time! I'm blown away when a total stranger picks a reward that's worth $5, and gives $50!

Going forward, these tips will be split 50/50 between me and the artists. This is how it works.

1. Someone selects a reward (say, Limp Wrist)

2. They decide to be generous, and instead of giving $6, they give $60!

3. That extra $54 is split 50/50:

$27 goes to Paper Rocket (me, Robyn Chapman)

$27 goes to the artist(s) (in the case of Limp Wrist, because there are two, Scout would get $13.50 and Penina would get $13.50)

This policy only applies to new items being Kickstarted, and not our backlist rewards.

Risks and challenges

This is my fifth Kickstarter campaign, so I think I've got it down!

Limp Wrist is complete and ready to print.

Preston and I have made about 50 screen prints, and we'll finish the run in a second batch.

The Micro-Press Yearbook 2013 is still in the works. While I'm aiming to get it done by September 13, it's possible I'll miss that date by a few weeks.

But, rest assured, this campaign will be fulfilled and rewards will start going out in September.
