Weather protection is a necessity not a luxury. The industry has seen literally no innovation in centuries!
We are still relying on two antiquated products for our entire weather protection needs: the traditional 'umbrella' and the 'raincoat' with a hood.
Yet most would agree, that these products are known to have some significant flaws and limitations. For example, the umbrella is widely known for inverting and you have to hold it!

And for our only hands-free weather protection solution, the raincoat? It's a far cry from an acceptable one.
A few examples:
Weather protection doesn't stop with precipitation. We are taking the umbrella back to its origins. The word umbrella comes from the Latin word 'umbra' meaning shade or shadow. And with the sun's damaging UV rays, people need protection from the sun and extreme heat.
The late amazing Steven Jobs said it best:
“How does somebody know what they want if they've never even seen it before?"
We couldn't agree more. Up to now, no one has ever even thought of or imagined a 'hands-free' umbrella.
But it is a natural fit in today's society. It's long overdue, but has finally arrived! In fact, I am surprised it hasn't already been developed. Lucky for me...and now, lucky for you!
I am very excited to share my story with you. I hope you will take a few minutes to view our entire video.
Back in late 2002, while living in NYC on a miserable, rainy and very windy day, I noticed how everyone was struggling with their umbrella. I also noticed the faces of those working in the rain that couldn’t hold an umbrella and had to rely merely on a raincoat and hood. I can tell you they didn't look too happy.
Suddenly, an image appeared in my mind and I popped into a coffee shop to sketch it.
Every great idea begins with a small thought. On that rainy, windy, miserable day in NYC, that small thought changed my life. And now, I am about to change yours!
A hands-free umbrella will enhance your life in many ways.
Imagine riding a bike, walking the dog, pushing your baby, watching your son or daughter play sports, sitting at a football game in rain or snow, standing at the Macy's day parade, delivering the mail, fishing or directing traffic without having to hold an umbrella! You can take pictures, drink coffee, text, talk....
Nubrella's "patent pending" new designs are not intended to be a replacement for your traditional umbrella but rather a new weapon in your current arsenal of weather protection gear and apparel.
Simply put, Nubrella solves existing problems but more importantly serves the huge unmet need of viable hands-free weather protection.
The Nubrella® brand will be known around the world as the 'innovator' of the world's first hands-free weather protector.
BEHIND THE DESIGN
In 2005, Nubrella engaged one of the leading product design and engineering firms in the country. After a year and 11 prototypes, the result was an innovative new smart aerodynamic canopy design allowing wind to simply flow over and around the canopy completely denying any ability to invert. I took the design one step further and added patented shoulder supports and straps to allow for complete hands-free capability, tested in 50-mph winds.
Ready for manufacturing, I traveled to China six times. Having successfully sourced a manufacturing partner we began tooling and initial production.
Finally in 2009, Nubrella was launched.
NUBRELLA'S INTRODUCTORY DESIGN
With just a simple press release Nubrella has sold thousands of units around the world through e-commerce alone. Today we are proud to say we have customers in over 75 countries and all 50 states (even at a cost of $110.00 internationally including shipping). Nubrella has been featured in over 100 media outlets around the world.
These early results imply strong world-wide demand for a hands-free umbrella.
The first Nubrella model was used as a test market receiving tremendous feedback. With that feedback, we returned to the design table to deliver what is now being hailed as the ultimate user-friendly hands-free umbrella solution.
We realized being enclosed in a 'bubble' limited communication and vision. Never mind it was a bit weird looking. Although very functional the front needed to be open!
To accomplish our design goals we cleverly redesigned Nubrella to be worn like a backpack and simply function like a hood; two widely accepted products in society today.
In 2011, I engaged another leading product design firm; ROBRADY design headquartered in Sarasota, Florida to help me design this new innovative solution. To date, they have invested significant time, expertise and passion for this project and I am grateful.
NEW BACKPACK STYLE DESIGN

- Redesigned open front canopy to provide non-interfered communication and perfect vision.

- Addressing the bubble and (dorky-factor)
- Simply functions like a hood going back and forth when needed.

Our initial design has been repositioned for more severe weather conditions and renamed Nubrella® Storm.
Designing Nubrella to be worn like a backpack will allow the user to deploy the canopy over their head and stop it at eye level. This is the breakthrough! Now the front will be completely open for perfect vision and non-interfered communication while remaining protected and completely hands-free.
WE'VE DONE IT! After numerous prototypes and considerable time and effort our design partner, ROBRADY delivered a production level sample of exactly what we were looking for.
This model is perfect for photographers, TV cameramen and hundreds of others who have been requesting an open front.
The applications and usages for a hands-free umbrella are extensive.
We have identified hundreds. We have highlighted just a few applications in the commercial and recreational fields:
Nubrella will have a variety of models specifically designed for different usages. All models will be designed for male and female and will come in a variety of colors.

This is our standard new backpack style design offering similar coverage to a mini-umbrella. Ideally for the millions whom work outdoors and cannot hold an umbrella and millions more doing everyday basic activities like; walking the dog, watching a sporting event or just out fishing.
Our streamlined version with a narrower profile specifically designed for use at sport stadiums around the world where umbrellas are currently barred. Nubrella Sport is also ideal for bike riding and for use out in the workplace. Enjoy hands-free protection while maintaining the use of both hands!
Nubrella® Pak includes a full standard backpack along with our smart canopy design. For those who desire a hands-free umbrella solution yet still need the use of a full backpack. This design is ideal for bike riders, commuters, students, children, hikers and many other applications.
A smaller version designed specifically for children ages 5-14. For parents who are concerned about safety this is a far safer and more reliable solution with no sharp points or poles. Nubrella® plans to partner with major licensing companies offering many fun designs.
This model is specifically designed to block the sun's ray as well as precipitation. Made of a high grade UV and waterproof material it is ideally suited for people who work in extreme heat and people concerned about risks of skin cancer.

- Cooler to wear, as nothing touches your head. Air simply flows through the front and through he open rear.
WHERE ARE WE NOW
Nubrella has completed 2 of 3 required design and engineering phases. Nubrella now requires a final design: engineering and testing phase on our new backpack-style designs; and some additional design work on the other styles for male and female including specific usages. Estimated cost: $95,000.
Once this phase is completed, ROBRADY will provide a full set of CAD drawings and our designs will be ready for production.
Your funds will help us complete the final design and testing phase of our new highly anticipated backpack designs. From there, we can move into the manufacturing phase with the final phase in your hands...or more accurately, not in your hands but cleverly worn for hands-free capability!
Currently Nubrella employs a CEO (Alan Kaufman - bio provided in other section), a Chief Marketing Officer and a financial planner. Our design partner ROBRADY will serve as Nubrella's operational partner acting as the liaison with our manufacturing partner insuring proper design and quality expectations.
The Nubrella management team along with our highly experienced product design partner is highly qualified to bring the new designs to market.
In addition Nubrella has a strong board of advisors to assist us in our efforts.
WE HAVE DONE IT BEFORE!
We know the design & engineering process; have sourced manufacturing; have a full understanding of the tooling and production process and timelines; filed the necessary patents domestically and internationally; will institute a broad distribution strategy.
Nubrella also has a highly experienced freight & fulfillment partner. For over four years, they have managed all of Nubrella's freight needs from China and serve as our complete order fulfillment center shipping product all around the world. They provide Nubrella with high volume low customer shipping rates as a major supplier.

Once funding is obtained, Nubrella will move forward with the following schedule:

My family and friends have been a tremendous support, both financially and emotionally. But unfortunately, those pockets aren't deep enough to support our final phase of engineering, testing, tooling and manufacturing.

Risks and challenges
My experience with the current design of Nubrella over the last 10 years has certainly enhanced my knowledge of the weather protection industry. We have designed, patented, manufactured and sold our introductory design in over 74 countries. For the new design, we will be sourcing a new manufacturing partner who will provide the top-notch quality we are seeking for the next generation of Nubrella.
And with that, there could be delays. There could be delays in the design & testing phase, if unknown considerations arise, but with our strong design firm, and my experience with the current Nubrella, I am confident any delays will be minimal.
