WHAT'S THE FILM ABOUT? Daughter is based on the Parable of the Lost Son and follows Lilah, a 16 year old British-Pakistani Muslim girl who is searching for her place in the world. Since the death of her mother, Lilah has begrudgingly taken on her mum's role in the family home. Frustrated by her inherently obstinate father and her brother's legalistic faith, Lilah makes a plan to run away with Jimmy, the 22 year old guy she has been seeing in secret. Torn between the call of a life without imposed values and the importance of her culture, Lilah makes the choice to flee, putting her family's forgiveness to the ultimate test.
WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM? Christian, the writer and director of Daughter, originally made a film pitch (watch here) based on the Parable for the film competition Enter the Pitch, where it reached the final. Since then he's been working hard to give it a new spin and he's really excited about this new interpretation. The origins of the new idea were influenced by one of Christian's personal connections, a friend with Pakistani heritage, and their story holding many similarities to that of the Parable. After extensive research he discovered similar stories to that of his friend. He realised that this is an aspect of modern multi-cultural British society that needs to be explored and talked about!
Firstly we believe this to be an amazing opportunity to make a film that works as a bridge between religious boundaries, different cultures and races, showing that regardless of religion there is common ground!
How are we using a well-known Bible story & relating it to modern day Islam?
After researching into the Prodigal Son story, Christian began to ask himself the questions: Where is that parable today? How best can you make this first century story relevant?
- Traditions in modern Muslim culture hold a huge amount of weight- marriage, inheritance and community. At the time the story was speaking to Jews- whose own cultural values hold similar weight.
- When running away from a traditional upbringing, the consequences for a British Muslim girl could either be disownment or a beating.
- Drinking, smoking, relationships outside marriage today for Muslims is still hugely frowned upon- much the same in 1st Century Israel.
Why do we need all this money?
- The budget reflects a four day shoot. This will be necessary to ensure the quality and turnover is high.
- We’d like some aerial shots to really push the premium aesthetic of the film. The bird’s eye view can also be interpreted as the view of God linking it to this traditional Biblical story.
- We need to hire a small but excellent crew to support the department leaders already attached. We have managed to get them on board for accommodating rates, but we still have to cover their time.
- We would love to get a recognised actor to play either Nasir, Jimmy or Asif to compliment the young actress we cast for Lilah.
- A budget to get the appropriate costumes/ props for the shoot.
- A budget for all the other pre-production, production and post production costs.
- As a director, Christian has been very creative with smaller budgets, and knows how to make a little go a long way to create an extremely high quality finished film.
- Check out the piegraph below that shows how the £11k will be allocated across the whole budget.
