We respect and appreciate the craftsmen of old who often spent months or even years working on a single project in order to make it all that it could be. Therefore, we’ve created Opus: a workshop that revisits many historical styles and focuses on quality and the art of craft itself. (But fear not: we don't require years or even months to complete most of our products.)
We're hoping that this Kickstarter project will enable us to make old things new on a larger scale. The more tools and supplies we have, the more we'll have to offer!
Opus: Book Arts
Our ambition is to provide a range of book forms—everything from pocket journals to medieval-inspired manuscripts—that possess aesthetic quality as well as durability. Strong materials, original techniques, and a variety of decorative styles all make this possible.
Opus: Book Arts also includes letterpress,* illumination,** and calligraphy. Just like our book forms, these three processes are flexible and hold the potential to compliment many styles.
*Letterpress: the printing process invented by Gutenberg in the mid-1400s.
**Illumination: a decorative art that uses gold leaf, silver leaf, and paint.
Opus: Decorative Craft
We create decorative items that incorporate leather, wood, paper, illumination, calligraphy, letterpress, paint, pyrography,* and more. We have intentionally designed each of these to be multipurpose artworks, which allows you to make them suitable to your own style and needs. Complete a collage. Beautify your dinner table. Fill that gap on your wall. Find unique artworks for your office. Keep the coffee table free of watermarks without sacrificing its charm.
*Pyrography: the technique of burning a design on wood or leather.
(If you would like to learn more about these mediums and processes, please visit opusblog.com.)
Christmas Tags: 20 handmade and embossed Christmas tags, perfect for gift packages.
A set of 12 handmade and embossed Christmas cards, including six silver cards with red envelopes and six red cards with white envelopes.
Opus Poster: We designed a typeface for Opus and used it on this letter-pressed poster. The corners are embellished with paint and silver leaf.
Illuminated Page: An 8"x12" handwritten page; the first letter is decorated with paint and 23k gold leaf. The two quotations available for text are the first verses from "Hark! the Herald Angels Sing," and "Of the Father's Love Begotten"—your choice!
Add this page to your decor or use it for a gift. (You should receive this reward in time for Christmas!)
Leather Journal: A hand-bound 5.5"x8.25" black leather journal with 64 pages of multipurpose paper. Use this book for notes, drawing, watercolors, or acrylic paint. (If at all possible, we will get this reward to you in time for Christmas!)
If you request letter-pressed text on the first page (up to five words), here are examples of the placement, black ink, and Garamond typeface that will be used.
Our unique binding allows the journal to lay open without book weights.
Decorated Wood Canvas: A 1.75"x9"x12" pine and linden wood canvas decorated with pyrography and 23k gold leaf.
Display this canvas on a table, in a hutch and buffet, or hang it on your wall—all you need is a hammer and a nail.
Coasters: These decorated pine wood coasters come in sets of six (two of each design).
Once the pyrography and 23k gold leafing are complete, we add several coats of protective wood finish.
Wood Platters: Two 8.5"x12.25" food-safe maple wood platters, perfect for decoration and for serving hors d'oeuvres. (You'll receive one of these for the $40 pledge.)
Just like our coasters, these platters are decorated with 23k gold leaf and pyrography. They are also completed with a protective wood finish.
Wood-Cover Journal: A 7"x12" maple wood-cover journal. The pages are 80lb coldpress watercolor paper, ideal for sketches, calligraphy, and watercolor paint. There are two pyrography designs available for the front cover; this is the Antha.
Below is the Emerald, the second available design for the front cover.
On the first page, we will write up to 10 words of your choice using a Gothic script and black ink.
This book maintains the same strength and flexibility as our leather journal.
We've wrapped high-quality black leather around the spine to add support and provide a finished look.
Shakespeare Scroll: A hand-crafted scroll of the Saint Crispin's Day speech from "Henry V" (approximately 8.5"x45"). We used a Gothic script and decorated the borders with 23k gold leaf, silver leaf, and paint. The crest of Henry V sits at the top.
We will make up to 10 originals of this scroll. Once our Kickstarter project ends, only copies will be available for purchase.
The names of all our Kickstarter supporters will be included on a "special thanks to" page of the Opus website.
Risks and challenges
Art is labor-intensive and the cost of materials adds up quickly. For this reason, we are starting small. We aim to provide high-quality art suitable for virtually any budget, starting with a few decorative items and book forms. As Opus grows, our products will include many other mediums, styles, and commissioned works (check opusworkshop.co for a larger preview).
Spreading the joy and benefits of handcraft is our primary goal, and so we hope to eventually offer workshops where you can learn these techniques yourself. We also plan to open a shop and studio space where customers can come to view and purchase our work in person. Training and hiring individuals with particular enthusiasm and dedication are also a long-term goals. But for now, our main outlets are the Opus website and local art fairs.
