About this project
Plunk Desk is a portable, adjustable standing desk handcrafted from wood and aluminum and consisting of just three parts. Plunk fits into a custom bag and no tools are needed for assembly. Made in LA.
I made Plunk Desk because I felt frustrated by the desks that were available. I knew the health implications of sitting for hours on end, and that was a factor, but I didn't just want a standing desk. I felt our computers were rapidly becoming lighter, faster and more portable, while our desks remained the same. The only solutions I found were massive, expensive hydraulic systems or featured designs that to me, lacked appeal.
Plunk is perfect to use either as your primary desk or in combination with your home and work desks. It's small footprint is convenient for those in smaller urban apartments.
Outside the office, there are a ton of other uses. Kick back and free up your hands on the sofa by adjusting it to a lower height. Check in guests at a restaurant. Use it in place of a folding table while admitting a studio audience. It's also ideal for keeping your laptop nearby while giving a presentation.
Plunk Desk was meticulously designed over the last couple years. The prototype was created entirely in the city of Los Angeles with the help of a number of talented craftsman and skilled laborers. If funding is achieved, production will continue with those woodworkers, machinists, foundry workers, bag makers and finishers who all work within independent local businesses, most of which are multigenerational family owned and operated.
Plunk weighs just over 7 pounds. It's very light, but has a solid stable feel. To increase the strength, the underside of the desk has a solid wood plug and a flange milled from solid aluminum.
The desktop is 20" x 15" and will comfortably accommodate any laptop or tablet up to 17". The base has a footprint of 16". The current prototype is adjustable to 40" in height, but the production version will be adjustable to 50" and will work for anyone up to 6' 3" tall.

Risks and challenges
Wood and metal are organic materials that can present manufacturing challenges and surprises from time to time. That said, I have all my manufacturers lined up and we've had to revise multiple versions of Plunk Desk, so I've been through this prototype from start to finish more than once.
To give you further piece of mind, I've also created another project and brought it from initial inception all the way through to market, so I'm not a total newbie. You're in good hands with even better intentions.
I will do everything within my capability to ensure every backer receives their order exactly to their requests in the time that I've estimated for delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The bag is constructed with thick, heavy duty waxed canvas that will keep moisture out. The inside of the bag has a 1/2" layer of foam covered in outdoor grade lining. A drizzle of rain or snow isn't gonna get through that and damage the desk.
That said, I would not leave it directly exposed for a prolonged period of time. If you're walking in an urban setting and can't avoid carrying it in rain or snow, I'd make some effort to minimize its exposure and/or use an umbrella to keep it protected if possible.
I have my manufacturers lined up and will start shipping in late January. People in the US should have their desks in early February. International backers may have to wait a little longer due to customs and shipping.
Upon request, I will supply a very nice gift card featuring Plunk Desk and explaining its features.
Yes. All backers who chose a desk as their reward have the option of veneer and finish.
No. If assembled properly, the desk is very stable and has a secure feel.
