Inspiration: EARTHBOUND, 1981
I saw this movie at the Derby Cinema in my hometown when I was 8. The Derby Cinema was a small theatre located in a strip mall and it was run by this ancient couple. The wife had a huge beehive hairdo straight out of a John Waters film and she HATED kids. Which is weird because kids were pretty much their only patrons.
See, there wasn't much to do on a weekend for kids in Derby so the cinema became a popular place for parents to dump their kids for a few hours. The rebel kids would sit in the back of the theatre and dump Bitty Bomb jaw-breakers on the floor and let them roll down the floor of the theatre at the most quiet moments. I always thought that was funny. Come to think of it, this is probably exactly why the owners hated kids. They would often stop the screening and threaten to kick us out if we didn't behave. It was always fun to see how far we could push them to the brink of insanity.
I distinctly remember being the only person in the theatre for EARTHBOUND. I'm sure the movie was a bomb, but it made an impression on me. I loved the idea of a family from outer space living among us. The two little boys become friends and I'm pretty sure there were moments when they both helped each other out using the alien kid's super power.
I've checked YouTube regularly over the years for any mention of it and, finally, someone uploaded this clip reel from an old VHS. I love YouTube for this reason.
