We are working on a film project to bring the story of the Apostle Thomas, the “Doubting Thomas” from the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, to life. According to ancient sources, Thomas journeyed to India and founded the Christian church there. One of the ancient sources of this story is “The Acts of the Apostle Thomas” which written in Aramaic (in the Syriac form of Aramaic). Aramaic is the language that was spoken by Jesus Christ.
There are over 28 million Christians in India and Christianity is the third largest religion in India. There are states in India with a high Christian concentration, such as Kerala, which is where Thomas ministered and where he founded seven churches according to local tradition.
Although Christianity in India dates to the time of the Apostles, at times Christians are exposed to persecutions. Hindi nationalist feel that to be authentically India, one has to be a Hindu. Hindu nationalist currently hold political power in India.
The message of the “Acts of Thomas in India” is tolerance and hopefully can contribute to the cause of interfaith dialogue and peace.
The first stage of the movie will be a short film on Thaddeus. According to the ancient sources, Thomas sent Thaddeus to the Assyrian city of Edessa, and later visited the city himself. The story of Thaddeus and Thomas are connected. Through the Thaddeus film, we will assemble the team to make the movie on Saint Thomas in India, and assemble the props and costumes that we will need to make the Thomas movie. The promo film seen here-is for the Thaddeus movie, the first stage of the Thomas movie. The story of Thomas and his departure to India is featured in the Thaddeus film.
The script for the film is completed. After the Thaddeus is completed we will go into production for the “Acts of Thomas.”
It is my hope to film portions of the movie in India and work with the “Saint Thomas” Christians in India in the production of the movie.
Risks and challenges
If we are able to secure the financing we need for this movie, the movie will be made. The greatest challenge is filming in India. This is the story of Indian Christianity. Ideally, we will team with Indian Christian film-makers to make this movie and film scenes in India, so that they can be involved in telling their own story. If there are bureaucratic challenges in India, we may have to film the movie elsewhere. These challenges could cause short delays in achieving our production goals.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
