About this project
We want to bring a traditional cucumber stand into life from the stop of the Silk Road, Istanbul. The cucumber stand like other street vendors offered cucumbers to the pilgrims, traders, and travelers for years. On our cucumber stand in the middle of the hot desert, we want to serve the famous cold salted cucumbers to the fellow burners.
Why is it important? At the 3,900 ft (1,200 mt) elevation, the human body loses electrolytes’. Electrolytes are mainly in sodium (salt) Loss of electrolytes’ can cause muscle cramping, headaches and more seriously seizures and disorientation. In the desert circumstances, going low on electrolytes’ can occur very sudden. Therefore supplementing the body with salt is crucial. With the cucumber stand, our goal is to create an oasis to replenish our fellow burners’ wellbeing in a fun way within this year’s theme, Caravansary. Our cucumber stand comes from the land where the continents meet.
How does it work? There are two sides of the cucumber stand and minimum of two people operate it. Both cucumber servers wear a traditional fruit seller apron. The cucumbers are in the middle of the stand; and additional cucumbers are stored in the cooler in the middle compartment. The servers peel, salt and serve the cucumbers to eat. If the cucumber is too dusty, then the server rinses the cucumber with the blue bottle of water. Cucumbers are served cold. The top of the cart is minimalist.
What is the construction and destruction schedule? We will build the cucumber stand in a day before the event starts. From Monday to Friday, we will serve the cucumbers and (maybe Raki shots) from 2 to 6 pm on the open playa. On the Saturday night, we will burn the stand together with the other artifacts on the playa. Our project is partially sponsored by the Burning Man organization. Since we prefer to offer 4 hours instead of 2 hours on the playa, we need to purchase more cucumbers. Your help will let us buy more cucumbers.
What is the interaction? Every server plays his or her own music at the cassette player. The cucumber stand servers may ask the guests to perform something from their culture.
With your donation, you can choose to receive goodies.

What is it? Why do we make it? When does it perform? Our Burning Man radio slot recording gives you the answers. Music is by Mercan Dede, recording and mixing by Alper Nakri, voiceover by Ceylan Sonmez
Risks and challenges
One of the challenges we face is the protection of the cucumbers. We had to arrange refrigeration not too cold so that cucumbers don't freeze OR not too warm so that cucumbers don't get too mushy. So we arranged two deliveries to the Playa. 700 X2 cucumbers will arrive on Sunday and Thursday. We rely on our fellow burner friends. Once we spend lots of time and resources to put it together, we want to spend at least 4 hours everyday instead of 2 hours as we initially planned. That's why we decided to raise funds for more cucumbers and more hours on the Playa.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
