About this project
Time Fold is a ceramic set of contemporary Judaica, inspired by the art of paper folding. Our life is full of rituals, many are secular, everyday rituals, Though, traditional rituals remain untreated on the aspects of contemporary design and modern life style. We designed Time Fold set, to bring ritual and festivity to our modern day to day life, people worldwide are invited to experience Time Fold as beautiful art pieces as well as functional ritual objects.
So far we designed Candlesticks, vase, Hanukah Menorah and a Mezuzah. we intend to expand the series and create a whole range of ritual objects, that will illuminate people's everyday life as well as holydays.
Our motivations are two-
First, we believe Kickstarter is a fabulous arena to experiment how people worldwide react to Time fold set of ritual objects. We believe Time Fold pieces could bring joy and raise superior feelings to everyone, to refresh the Jewish repertoire of traditional tools of worship, and to bring a multi cultural experience to people of different cultures.
Second, and not less important, we need you, backers, to help push Time fold set to the market, to develop more prototypes, produce more molds, in order to expand the range of products and to create new design culture to ancient tradition. (to have a general idea of develop and production costs- scroll this page down)
Our previous art works and design pieces, exhibited in museums and galleries such as the Jewish museums of new York, and san Francisco, ('Re-inventing rituals', 2009-2010) And 'Beit Ha'tefuzot' museum, in Tel Aviv, ('Judaica Twist' ,2010).
Although running secular modern life, both of us share interest and attraction to Jewish tradition, specially in the aspects of culture, aesthetics and street life, it is probably because of our personal backgrounds- Anat raised in a religious family, and Hadas spent her childhood in the ultra orthodox city of Bney-Brak. Now we wish to share the joy and inspiration we experience with ritual object design with people worldwide, and offer our contemporary design interpretation for objects of ancient tradition.
We love the art of paper folding, we are fascinated by the transformation of 2 dimensional sheets into 3 dimensional objects. The hand work with paper connects us to ancient craft; the direct touch with the paper allows us to investigate the material's characters and behavior.
Inspired by the simple geometric lines of paper folding and its clean shapes, we want to create a modern contemporary look for Jewish iconic objects, yet we keep their original function and connection to rules of tradition.
Looking for the right material to translate the paper prototypes to long lasting objects, we discovered the flexibility of ceramics and its poetic qualities. As we insist on handcrafted products, made in Israel, we toured our country and met some craftsmen and craftswomen, with whom we evolve a routine of work.
Working with ceramic allows us to produce small and medium amounts of products, and keep Time Fold set exclusive and unique.
We are Hadas Kruk, and Anat Stein, both industrial designers. We established Studio Armadillo in 1997. Visiting our studio, located in Tel Aviv, Israel, you may find consumer products we design for industrial clients, alongside independent art and design works we create in the field of contemporary Judaica. Design is our natural language to express our deep interest and attraction to ancient Jewish tradition.
We started with four selected products to be the first of a growing set. Their design follows the Jewish Hallachah, These are functional ritual objects, used on holydays and adorn any living space everyday.

How much did you invest so far?
To give you a general idea of the costs: Development of each product involves rapid prototyping + test molds + mother molds, sometimes we need to repeat stages in order to improve the design, this may reach a budget of 3000-4000$.To start distribution we need to produce a few working molds and to run a first production order, we also need to design and produce packages, this stage add another 2000-3000$ to the budget.
The more you invest, the more we can expand and develop TIME FOLD series.
What if you fund more?
In case we double our initial goal of 7000$, we will start immediately a design process of a new product: a Center Piece that functions as a 'Seder-plate'. (a tableware that contains symbolic food for Passover night).
Many friends, family and collegues helped us to develop Time Fold set, and to build this campaign. Many thanks to Or Uzrad, for the multi disciplinary advises and practical help, Osnat Raichman, for the dedicated support and professional work, Gil Zablodovski for the video, BarretteYeretsian for the music, Meni Klein, for the informatics skills and ideas, Hagit Peleg-Rotem, for the wisdom of words, support and ideas, Dan Benton, Ori Bartal, Yael Shertzer, Yafit Becher and Gil Kuafman.
Risks and challenges
For the last year we've been touring the country, meeting suppliers and professional manufacturers.
We evolved a routine of work with some of them, during a long sessions of trial and error we started to love the results of this process. Yet, as we know the world of ceramic better, we are also aware of its Vulnerabilities. Matters like weather can influence the production rate, as we insist the products will be handcrafted in Israel, we depend on a small ceramic industry, based on small and medium workshops, the potential of production is not huge to say the least, but, that promises Time Fold set will stay exclusive and unique. To satisfy our backers, we built this campaign based of products we already produced, and on orders we have in production. We are prepared to increase production rate by ordering more working molds, if the campaign creates higher demand.
