THINK DECK is a toolkit for reflection and self-discovery. With thought-provoking questions, it helps you reframe problems, revisit old ideas, and think more deeply about your career, environment, and relationships.
We are successfully funded and our first production run is in November 2016! Visit our website for future updates and orders.
THINK DECK can be played solo or with a group of friends, family or co-workers. Average time to play is 30-45 minutes. You will go through 4 distinct phases of the game to help you reflect on your current situation and the direction you want to go. The questions you encounter during the game are designed to help you reflect on three distinct areas of your life:
SELF: How we work & who we are
PEOPLE: How we connect to those around us
FEELINGS: How we relate to our environment
By taking a cross-cut through different parts of your life, you will be able to see where you are going in the right direction and where you could make adjustments.
01 MINDSET - The MINDSET phase uses a short exercise to get you... well... into the right mindset. From here, you will be ready for reflection and introspection.
02 DISCOVERY - The DISCOVERY phase has you answer questions from the three life categories: SELF, PEOPLE, FEELINGS.
03 REFLECTION - During the REFLECTION phase, you examine your answers to the questions from DISCOVERY. In the group setting, you have the chance to share findings with others.
04 WORK IN PROGRESS - Here you develop ideas on how to make meaningful and lasting change based on your reflections. It is up to you to implement the things you learn.
Here a preview of what THINK DECK looks like.
- 60 original question cards specifically designed for reflection and supporting introspection split in three categories
- 1 Guiding Principles card to keep you focused on answering with an open mind
- 2 sets of instructions for solo and group settings
If you pledge for one of the rewards with T-Shirt you will also get a THINK DECK T-Shirt, specifically designed for our Kickstarter backers! Here a sneak peek of the final T-Shirt design.
THINK DECK came to life when Philip and Alanna were talking about their transitions from "one life to another" in spring of 2016. Alanna left a ten-year stint as a designer at Wells Fargo and was on the search for her next career move, craving for something new. Philip came out of a company he co-founded seven years prior and was thinking about what would come next for his entrepreneurial endeavors. Both thought a lot about the changes in their lives, read books and blogs, talked to friends and journaled to assist on their quests.
There was no tool out there to help with the transition and changes in their lives so they took their combined knowledge from years of graphic design, product design, building companies and running teams and created THINK DECK - a deck of cards that they would actually want to use themselves while going through transition in the future.
The game underwent many test sessions in solo and group settings. Over the course of a few months the game questions, instructions and game mechanics were refined to make for a smooth gameplay and the best results from the reflection exercises.
Here is what others say about THINK DECK:
"This is like WikiLeaks for my mind! I uncovered all kinds of crazy things!" - Robert after playing a solo round.
"We found out that we were aligned in our wants and fears - and after playing decided to finally buy the one-way tickets to Spain to live there" Janelle & Miguelle after playing together (They actually then moved to Spain in August 2016... no kidding!).
"I feel so much closer to you now after we went through this exercise. I feel like I know you much better and can work much better with you going forward" - Matt to his business partner after a group session.
May 2016 - Philip and Alanna start talking about creating a game to help with transition and introspection. The initial list of questions was shared.
June 2016 - It was decided to make a card game. The planning begins and we have the first rounds of test-playing the game with the initial questions and game-mechanics.
July 2016 - The game mechanics are overhauled after feedback from test-playing a couple of times. We decided that this will be a project to launch on Kickstarter later in the year. A local printer was selected to do the production in the SF Bay Area (in Oakland).
August 2016 - The game-mechanics are almost dialed in and the graphic design, layout and the overhaul of the instructions starts.
September 2016 - The design is in the final rounds. The Kickstarter video is recorded and we launch the campaign.
October 2016 - Last touches on the game design and closure of Kickstarter campaign.
October 20th - The campaign is over. We are FUNDED!!! Thank you for your support!
November 2016 - Printing of THINK DECK and shipping them to you - our backers! After a lot of interest, we added shipping to countries in the EU!! Backers in the EU will receive their cards in early December.
November 2016 onwards - THINK DECK is available for purchase online. Visit our website to find our where to get your copy.
You can find updates on the campaign and game here on Kickstarter or on our website at http://thinkdeck.cards.
Risks and challenges
THINK DECK is already thought through and has been played many times in solo and group settings. The game mechanics are set and the final design is being done. We are doing all the design ourselves and with our backgrounds have the bases covered to produce a high-quality set of cards.
While there can always be problems coming up during print, the local printer specializes in custom print jobs and we worked closely with them during selection of paper, layout and overall card design. That way we can make sure to create a product that lasts and can be used many times over.
As soon as the Kickstarter campaign ends we know how large to make the initial order with the printer and will be able to ship well before the holiday season.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
