About this project
A new look at locks? Now is the time!
Securing your home or office with regular locks can be a costly endeavour and the locks often need a specialist for the install. A regular, high quality, lock costs €29,-. The Burglar Blocker only costs €7,50 (€15 for two) and has comparable strength. This makes Burglar Blocker the most affordable window lock for securing your home and office that is easy to install as well!
A quick demo:
Burglar Blocker is secure
The SKG has thoroughly tested the Burglar Blocker on durability, strength and security. They have awarded the Burglar Blocker a one star SKG certification. A proof that the Burglar Blocker can keep up to its promises. http://www.skg.nl/en.html
Burglar Blocker is affordable
Budget locks are often forced in seconds. Certified locks are way stronger but also more expensive. Burglar Blocker is affordable and strong at the same time.
In comparison with other one star SKG locks the burglar blocker has a 75% lower price than the other locks.
A quick calculation:
On average a one star SKG lock costs about €29 this makes €58 for a set of two locks. The Burglar Blocker costs €15 for a set of two. Now let's say you have a normal home. And around 5 windows to secure. To secure a window properly you need two locks per window.
Regular one star locks:
5 x €58 = €290,-
The Burglar Blocker:
5 x €15 = €75,-
In this case the Burglar Blocker saves you €215,- in comparison with regular locks of similar strength.
Burglar Blocker is easy to install
Everyone can install the Burglar Blocker it just takes 3 easy steps:
- Step 1: Create marks for the holes of the screws;
- Step 2: Pre-drill the holes and place the screws;
- Step 3: Assemble and place the burglar blocker.
Patrick's first customer
Ivo Opstelten, The Dutch minister of safety and justice, personally thanked Patrick for his invention. After that he ordered the first 5000 sets of the first version of the Burglar Blocker (without the cover).
One day Patrick decided he and his family should go on a vacation, and so it happened. Bags were packed and the locks were checked the house was secure and they could go. At least they thought the house was secure...
When they were gone burglars broke into their home and stole jewellery and money. The place was a wreck. When Patrick and his wife informed security experts what it would cost to install some locks they were shocked. When asking if the price could come down one of the experts laughed and said: "You can always secure your windows by installing an angle bracket with some screws."
An idea was born:
That's when deep inside Patricks brain a brilliant idea came to life. Why don't we combine the low cost and sturdiness of an angle bracket with the way an ordinary lock opens and closes? This way we create a window lock that is easy to install, secure and affordable at the same time.
After creating the first prototype Patrick competed in a safety and security contest held one of the leading Dutch insurance companies, and he won first prize. The prize money helped Patrick to create his first product called "Kozijn op Slot" (Translation Window Locked).
The birth of the Burglar Blocker:
But the lock didn't quite look right. The lock was easy, affordable and secure. But it still looked like an angle bracket. So Patrick called in the help of Hennie, a steel production company owner. Together they designed a cover that included a key, and made the lock look a lot better! The Burglar Blocker as we know it was born.
What do we need your funding for?
Creating a product that is affordable comes at a price. We need to be able to create a high volume of products to keep the price per product as low as possible. To make this possible we need the following:
- A mold to create the cover for the Burglar Blocker
- A mold to create the strong metal bracket of the Burglar Blocker
Really? That's it? Two molds? Yes, the molds cost around €15.000. Together with Patrick's prize money we can make it happen.

Risks and challenges
The first version of Burglar Blocker (in Dutch: Kozijn op Slot) was already introduced (November 2013) in the Netherlands with good result, this reduces the potential Risks for the second version of Burglar Blocker significantly.
Current Risks include for the second version are:
1) Incorrect, or late delivery of Plastic and Metal mold
2) Product certification (SKG) delays
3) illnes of Patrick or other primary team members
Mitigation of those potential risks is:
Risk number 1: Build mold in the Netherlands with proven partners, focus and responsibility is on: a working end product
Risk number 2: Open communication lines with SKG and work hard to meet their demands
Risk number 3: Always have a team member as backup to stand in for the other ones. (If Patrick becomes ill, Rieko will take over)
General mitigation: Inform your backers frequently
General mitigation: keep team small and committed
General mitigation: All team members are professionals in what they do, and have a minimum of 5 years experience in inventing, marketing and/or producing.
