“Does it mean something to you?” This resonates deeply with Josh as he wistfully recalls a story of a beach and its washed up remnants.
A successful man and his therapist unravel the troubles of the present by awakening the memories of his past.

White Awake - a 16mm short film

£5,770

We've reached our target goal!
However, any further money we receive would be spent on improving the production values of the film in the form of:

  • recording real instruments for the original music score rather than relying solely on digital ones
  • utilising higher quality lenses

*VIDEO UPDATE on our progress since we launched this campaign*

STORY

White Awake is a short film about innocence, loss, and the social masks we wear.  It is a touching visceral story about connection and the depths and obstacles of confronting emotion.

Joshua is a successful accountant who seemingly has everything.  Intelligent, refined.  But he isn't whole.  During a therapy session, he recounts several stories about his hoarder friend Robert who lives with his wife and adopted son.  The boy, like his father, has grown up with a love of collecting things; for the father it is a love of collecting pennies and for the boy it is a love of collecting shells.

While shell-hunting on the beach, the boy unexpectedly discovers the fossilised remains of a seahorse, something Joshua doesn’t reveal to his therapist.  And he is finally confronted with a question regarding his story: “does it mean something to you?”

APPROACH

White Awake will be shot in London and the Kent coastline using a combination of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and 16mm film.  This is to service the narrative which will cover two distinct time periods: one set in present day (digital) and the other in the past (film).  Likewise, a handheld shooting style will differentiate Joshua’s stories in the past with the stillness of the present day therapy session.

An original music score will also be key to creating a reflective and wistful mood to the film.  Some scenes will employ minimalistic ambient sound design, so music will be essential to help communicate the mood in the short running time.

WHY US?

Simply put, we want to create films that matter.  As the old maxim goes, story is king and we recognise that people open up to great stories, well told.  In today’s world of media overload, it’s difficult to capture people’s attention, but we hope that our passion and focus on story and character might allow us to stand out from the crowd.

Our prior experience in producing narrative music videos (www.sixtyclicks.com) has given us the technical and narrative know-how in understanding what works, especially on a budget.  Ultimately, we want to create a film that we’d want to watch, so we are our toughest audience!

Please give our reel a watch to discover what we’re all about:

Here is a selection of narrative music videos we have produced:

WHO ARE WE?

THE CAST

Hainsley Lloyd Bennett will be playing the lead role of Joshua.  He is a talented and electric actor with the depth and range to portray the layers of this complex character.  He has lent his skills to productions such as London Boulevard with Colin Farrell and Ray Winstone, television staple Casualty, music videos including one for the Noisettes, as well as high profile commercials for Rubicon, McDonald's and the Times.  He recently took part In the 48 hour sci-fi-London film festival as a lead in Smokestack as well as the lead in Seven Dancing Princesses which was also funded through Kickstarter.

Meryl Griffiths will be playing the role of Natasha.  She is a graceful actress who will be key in uncovering Joshua's past.  Meryl has performed with the Tower Theatre Company in productions such as The Graduate, The Maids and Faith Healer.  Her most recent projects include the feature films Shadow Industry and Welcome to the Majority.

Nick Ewans will be playing the role of Robert.  He is an actor and comedian who possesses the strong improvisational skills necessary for the character.  Nick is best known for the feature films 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, London to Brighton and Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel.

Sallyann Fellowes will be playing the role of Penny.  She is a sensitive actress who is currently appearing as Elizabeth in the film Reflecting the Wandle, and has previously been involved in touring theatre productions such as Twelfth Night and The Bisley Boy.  Sallyann is an ex-police detective who enjoys writing and devising her own work, and has recently branched out into stand-up comedy.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE USED?

White Awake is a passion project.  The majority of the cast, crew and collaborators involved will be working for free.  However, we still need money for:
- film and processing
- camera and lighting equipment
- locations, wardrobe and props
- transportation and food
- insurance and licenses

So anything you can donate will help us reach our target goal and realise this film.  Unless we reach our target goal, we won’t receive a single donation through Kickstarter.

Here is an approximate breakdown of how the money will be used:

Risks and challenges

Filmmaking is an inherently risky process for everyone involved. It is this very risk, however, that has to be embraced if an emotionally layered film such as White Awake is to resonate truthfully and powerfully with its audience.

White Awake has many challenges: we are working with a child actor, the subject matter is complex, we are working with 16mm film, and there are numerous locations. We know the professionalism and dedication of our team will ensure that these challenges are dealt with smoothly and the film turns out as intended.
