Feel A Little is a colourful, character-filled book about big feelings for little ones. It features poems by Jenny Palmer, illustrated by Evie Kemp, in their first ever collaboration and they've partnered with Little Love to publish this heartfelt project into a bright, beautiful hardback book.
We are so excited to launch on Kickstarter and involve even more people in our journey of making this special book! It's our dream to make a real difference in children's emotional literacy, and to do this in a way that is fresh, fun, beautifully designed and engaging. Feel A Little isn't JUST a super cute book, it's a whole toolbox for starting conversations about emotions from a young age. We're here because we'd love your support, and we'd also like to give you the chance to get our first editions and some sweet rewards - before anyone else!
So, what is Feel A Little?
Feel A Little began as an online project; researching, discussing and interacting about a different emotion each week to inspire an original poem and illustrated character for little ones, shared via social media. All these feelings, and our amazing community support, grew and grew and now we're so proud to share with you...Feel A Little - the book!
About the book!
Feel A Little is a rainbow of 14 important emotions, all explored through gorgeous ‘read along’ rhymes accompanied by cute characters and beautifully designed, professionally printed and bound into a vibrant hardcover book. Feel A Little is perfect for reading to children from a young age, and for children aged 7 - 11 to read to you. We’ll be distributing Feel A Little throughout NZ, Australia and hopefully, worldwide!
And, just a little more...
From the very beginning, the design of Feel A Little had to go hand in hand with most effectively reaching a young audience and using both poetry and illustration to inspire their imaginations and open dialogues. This book is really about encouraging all the different ways we can communicate and understand feelings, and enabling every child to find their own way to do that!
Why is this so important?
Youth emotional and mental health are huge issues in our communities, with children maturing earlier and facing an isolating modern world with modern challenges. As a community we need to start focussing on understanding and encouraging communication around feelings from an early age - equipping children with the tools they need to best face the ups and downs (and in-betweens) of life. Parents, caregivers and educators need a variety of ways to encourage these conversations and the safe space of engaged reading together is a proven, effective beginning. Feel A Little creates poetic and imaginative word prompts and a visual language for emotions, providing a starting point for discussions that you can come back to again and again.
Who are we?
The creators behind Feel A Little are...us! Author Jenny Palmer (of A Little Ink) and illustrator Evie Kemp. We share backgrounds in art, creative businesses, (ahem, award-winning) children's books and child care and are two friends with ALL the feelings who have finally found a shared project to put heart and soul into! We love this book and we would absolutely love to share it with you all.
Little Love is a brand new imprint of Mary Egan Publishing, whose latest notable work is Tu Meke Tūī written by Malcolm Clarke and illustrated by Flox (aka Hayley King), 2016.
Why should you support us?
Feel A Little is, at heart, thoughtfully-designed poetry, pictures and production and we've put the same thought into this Kickstarter too. We want to do this as a community and along with the very first editions of the book, we want to share really special rewards with our supporters. We have limited edition prints, custom dedications, poems and illustrations and even Feel A Little Workshops for local schools or organisations! As an extra ‘thank you’ all book rewards are at a special Kickstarter only price - and you can choose to have them signed as well!
We also believe every little book can and should make a difference, so we are giving $1 for every book sold here to the wonderful charity Foster Hope (you can read all about them below!) and if you buy one of our first 100 books we will donate a book in your name to a child in foster care. Your support can fund our first print run and distribution, giving back and getting the conversation started, and we would feel a little proud (and grateful) to have you on board.
Who do we support?
We have chosen to support the NZ charity Foster Hope as part of Feel A Little. Foster Hope are a small, hands-on charity doing thoughtful and important work in providing care, love and essential items like care packs to children in foster care. We understand that regardless of circumstance all children experience hard times and every experience is valid, however reaching children at a time of extreme emotional experience is so important to us and our philosophy. Please check them out at www.fosterhope.co.nz, they really are a special service.
What’s the timeline?
Our Kickstarter campaign is running for just 30 days. With a successful Kickstarter, we anticipate having all rewards (including books and prints) sent out to you by the first week of April, meaning you’ll have the book before anyone else! Custom illustration and poetry rewards will be arranged via email as they’ll take a little longer - but we promise they’ll be worth waiting for!
Risks and challenges
Together we have put our hearts into Feel A Little and have worked tirelessly (and will continue to of course) to make it this far. We knew tackling emotions for children came with huge responsibility and we've put a lot of time, research and love into our resources, social media outreach and the subsequent poems and images. We are SO proud of what we have achieved with the help of everyone that has been part of this journey to date.
We've already overcome some big challenges to ensure the book is exactly what we dreamed it would be - sampling papers, sizes and printing techniques. Through working with Mary Egan Publishing we've been able to ensure we have trusted printers, and a tried and tested freight process to make sure the books arrive on time. We have received our advance copies and they are perfect, so now we're on to the biggest and most rewarding challenge - getting the books to you!
We need to hustle harder than ever to make this book a reality and spread the word. We want to get these books as far and wide as we can. We want to get schools, kindergartens and community organisations involved. We know this comes with a lot more work but it's worth every bit to share this with the world.
With your support - be it buying a book, telling your friends, sharing on social media or even just giving us some feedback, we know we can do this!
Thank you so much for taking the time to check us out and we can’t wait for you to read Feel A Little!
Jenny & Evie xx
