PissPad™ is a patent-pending Human Interface Device that controls a computer connected via BlueTooth. It is capable of detecting 1000 measuring points, so that relieving oneself on the device sends coordinates to a smartphone or a wall mounted tablet. This turns the call of nature into fun and interactive competition on connected devices as long as the "ammunition" holds out!
The PissPad App is a software (Android, IOS, Windows Mobile - Cordova/Crosswalk) containing a growing collection of games for the device. It is also capable of running on wall-mounted tablets as well. The Kickstarter version will be programmed to allow for instant multiplay against local or remote opponents. If used via smartphone, the app will communicate with wall mounted tablets as well, so that there is no need to enter your player name separately.
Global high-score name reservation
During testing it became clear that we would need at least three high-score lists for each game: one for the current game session, one for the current location and a global one leaderboard.
Furthermore, we wanted to track exciting and curious stats such as maximum and average stream duration, user frequency, stream width, agility, break outs, and so on.
All this data needs to be associated with a unique name. And you can register this very important global name now - here on Kickstarter :). Make sure that you reserve the desired name that will ring out in glory across the globe and go down in history!
A few names are - of course - on that list already.
Paul, Achim, Gero, Peter and a bunch of others that helped us along the way.
With your pledge you will get a user number to show off that you were there at the beginning using PissPad before it was cool. We will ask you to select your top three ranked name choices and get back to you with the reserved one. If your names have been selected and your choices are gone, we will refund the pledge—no questions asked!
PissPad with Smartphone Holder
Perfect for all your pals who have a smart phone on hand.
The game selection is automatically activated through NFC. (Phones with usable NFC)
PissPad with wall mounted Display
No additional gadget needed.
The display is in fact a tablet with a frame. It contains a Battery designed to run for up to 5 hours. You will get a power supply and a 10m cable to connect it with a wall plug if you want to run it without charging.
"No WiFi" - add Multiplayer Box
In case you do not have WiFi Access in the lavatory and want to allow in-house multiplayer gaming. (For the Techies: basically a RasPI acting as a WiFi AP running the game server)
Add +45 Euro to get a multiplayer Box with power supply.
Only Kickstarter pledgers of the PissPad hardware will be able to personalize the PissPad with custom text messages before each game! The message itself will be stored within the device. You will be able to change your shout-outs or trash talk via the PissPad app at any time, adding to the exciting gameplay! Furthermore all pledgers will receive multiplayer-ready devices at no additional costs. In the future we will introduce retail PissPads that will require a fee-based multiplayer upgrade on the app side.
The Hardware is working and we are able to produce PissPad devices using a 3D Printer. The production of the protecting metal mesh and the PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) needs to be outsourced. A thermal sensor needs to be integrated to help prevent cheating. The redesign will result in a smaller housing for the electronics. OTA needs to be implemented within the firmware.
Single Player Mode is working, as are local highscore tallies. Video-capturing on demand is working. The Multiplayer Mode needs to be implemented completely and so does the web-based Game Creation Platform. We will add optional live-streaming of current games to a remote screen. (e.g. a television in the bar)
A word about Battery Lifetime
One of our first goals was that changing the batteries for the PissPad should not be necessary during the average lifetime of the product. The power of our batteries are designed to last for at least 2 years. If you have more than average “foot traffic,” PissPad’s batteries can be changed as well.
The wall mounted Tablet
To lower the costs we decided to use one designated tablet, order this in larger quantities and create a very customized housing that is solid but not too big.
When I was a wild student celebrating at parties, I thought that an interactive electronic game would break up the monotony of trips to the bathroom and create some fun competition and bragging rights during the celebrations. Since those fun days were eons ago, my dreams were dashed by the lack of technology and dangers of high voltage. The 21st century has given us social media and undreamed of technology. It is now time to put technology to good use: turning pee streams into bit streams and fun competition! No matter the “hardware” in your hands, Pisspad will now turn any bathroom into a gridiron!
Pisspad might not conform to Western bathroom norms and etiquette, but that doesn’t prohibit the device from working properly. All it takes is a different strategy. By the way, did you know that our extensive research found that in various places on earth, women do their business standing up? While we acknowledge that men have it a bit easier on the fields of this competition, PissPad makes a great gift for the “whiz-kid” in your life who wants to be the party’s joker!
We love open source! We want to create open source!
If we reach our funding goal we will be able to fulfill your pledges, but not much more - 35 k is not much money to operate with.
With such limited contributions we need to seek investors to expand this enterprise. However, having released everything to the public is not a thing an investor is looking for. Not to mention time and effort to clean up all the code and make it "world readable".
Announcing the release of all the code in case of reaching significant milestones in hardware preorders is the only way to let you makers, hackers, coders out there know, that you will not only support a crazy piece of hardware - by backing the PissPad you might enable us to create a real open source software and hardware product! So if you want to try your hands at game creation and modding your experience, donate and spread the word to your friends!
Stretch Goal "open games"
In case we will reach 100 k we will provide an API access to simplify writing your own PissPad game. If the game gets a 5 star rating, we will add it to the list of games on pisspad.net.
Stretch Goal "open source"
Reaching 200 k we will release the complete code "open source". You will get access to the firmware code, the app code and the game server code.
Stretch Goal "open PissPad"
Reaching 300k we will release it all!
You will get access to schematics, PCB design, housing design, materials and tools used. This will enable you to build PissPad from scratch.
And furthermore - by reaching the open PissPad goal you will be allowed to sell those self made PissPads if you sign a contract that will ensure that
- no other game server and leaderboard list infrastructure other than our own will be used
- you will release all your modifications as open source too.
We plan to produce PissPads and the screens in-house using 3D printing and external suppliers. If demands exceed our capabilities, we will outsource production to a certain extent. We will, for example, produce more of the shaped parts by injectionmolding. PCB's of course will be outsourced in any case.
After successful funding the steps to be taken are:
July 2016 - August 2016
- Design changes for serial production
- Ordering tools and pinters
- PCB Production
- Ordering parts from external suppliers
September 2016 - November 2016
- Setup production line for "Zero Series"
- Produce "Zero Series*
- Establish quality assurance (tools and process).
- Test Zero Series
- Refactoring until QS ok.
Jan 2017 - Feb 2017
- First production run.
- Test first production run.
- Shipment preparation
April 2017 - ...
- Test with pledgers every tuesday evening :)
Instead of painting a real tough production plan we do prefer to underpromise and overdeliver regarding the timeline.
One thing I learned from supporting around 30 Projects on Kickstarter - I love updates! You will get them - I promise you !

Risks and challenges
I quit my job at the beginning of the year to work full time for the PissPad.
The last 16 months i have worked at it for about 3 to 4 days a week.
Now we are 4 guys supporting this enterprise and working to make it a reality.
This is our first mass-market hardware product, so we acknowledge that there is a risk in having no experience with production on a large scale. However, we know our product and the issues extremely well from our production using 3D printers and extensive testing, and we are now able to confidently produce small to medium quantities of functional devices in-house. For the mass production setup we will use external consultation.
Regarding the software - we know Murphy’s Law and, with respect to this, we will ensure that besides the basic functionality the PissPads will be able to regularly receive OTA Updates (Update the Software with your Smartphone)
The product is outrageous and perhaps some would say childish—but there’s no denying that it is innovative, crazy, and fun. It is also simple: its hardware setup is not rocket science. We are not putting a man on the moon here! The basic idea is simple from a technical point of view. Therefore, we have extremely low risks of "overpromise - underdeliver" from the hardware point of view.
I will work as hard as possible to get the PissPads spread throughout the world in order to fulfill not only your pledge, but to fulfill my vision too: testing my mettle on the field of battle against people from all over the world in their favorite pub!!
