The Pico de Gallo Commission: A Cross-Border Collaboration
Through this Kickstarter campaign, you can acquire an original piece of art, executed collaboratively by Pico de Gallo and Jonathan Frioux. This project connects issues about pictorial space and mark-making, in the spirit of Cy Twombly, with current political and economic issues, exploring the economy of the nostalgic, Endless Summer tourism of the Baja.
The Inspiration: A Friendship with Pico de Gallo
While on a surfing trip in Mexico, Jonathan stumbled across a languid, sun-drenched fish market called Popotla. The place was packed like a big living room with locals conversing together casually next to the ocean. Everything seemed to be worn down and faded by a thick layer of salt.
As he wandered through the market, a few colorful signs caught Jonathan's eye: “Spicy Pineapple with Coconut and Mango. Papaya, Lime, Coconut and Jícama.” The Spanish words were written in sprawling, bended lines.
Inquiries about the signs led Jonathan to Ignacio, aka, Pico de Gallo, a charismatic vendor who serves fresh fruit bowls. In Pico’s signs Jonathan saw the visual language he learned at RISD, one of the top painting schools in the U.S., and a language he incorporates in his own work. Jonathan recognized the richness of Pico's letters and the symbolic gesture of a potential cross-border, cross-cultural, cross-occupational collaboration. A partnership was born.
Jonathan incorporates abstract elements and representational imagery, using a variety of techniques to carefully highlight the beauty of Pico’s signs.

Challenges could potentially arise with customization; however, Jonathan will contact backers before January 22, 2018 to collect color and fruit choices. He will be available to answer questions as needed.
In the unlikely case that a work is damaged during shipping, Jonathan will repair the damages or replace the artwork.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
