This Kickstarter Gold campaign is intended to raise funds to support the production and recording of an album of music for cats and their humans. In 2015, I created a Kickstarter campaign for the first-ever album of music that was composed just for cats. After the album was released there was a flood of heartwarming feedback from cat owners - and a number of requests for a second album. Although all of the songs on that first album contained music that was designed to make the song palatable for humans, one of the songs, Lolo’s Air, was designed to be music that could be shared by both the cats and their human companions.
This second album will contain eight songs that will all be intended for feline-human sharing. It is a bit tricky to create, but I enjoy the extra effort because I love the idea that music can enhance the connections between cat and companion. This second album will consist entirely of the next generation of this shared music. Although I have been working on music for dogs and horses, the letters and reviews from the first album were so encouraging that I decided to make the creation of a second album my first priority.
All of our digital downloads will be available in three formats, mp3 (compressed), 44kHz (CD quality), and 96kHz (highest quality). In the studio, we use special microphones and audio equipment that record very high frequencies. We do this because, when it comes to high hearing, dogs get the PR but cats can actually hear higher than dogs. All of the instruments that I use are acoustic-based to appeal to the high-resolution hearing of cats since natural sounds are much more complex and varied than electronic music.
The video above outlines how I came up with the idea and a thumbnail sketch of how it works. The scientific foundation of this music is strong and getting stronger. Please check out the attached journal articles and news reports (below) on music for cats for more information. The music for monkeys and music for cats that I created were both tested and shown to be effective in studies conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I am eager to spread the word about animal sentience and their capacities for appreciating beauty - as long as it is designed for them - so please have a listen to a talk that I gave recently at the National Academy of Sciences "Beauty is in the Eye of the Species" by visiting the MIT Press site: http://arteca.mit.edu/video/david-e.-teie-beauty-eye-species

This Kickstarter Gold campaign is to fund the production of a full album of music to share. We all know that love is the ultimate connecting force, and I have often thought that the best music is like love in sonic form. With this music I hope to bring a new enhancement to the connection between our two species. Cats and their humans sharing one music.
As it was for the first Kickstarter campaign and album, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to animal shelters and the music will be provided for free to shelters and hospitals that do not practice declawing.
Risks and challenges
As I mentioned, if everything is balanced just right, it is possible to blend music for humans and music for cats, to create a shared experience through music that I hope will be enjoyable to both you and your cat.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
