A photography project that looks at surf culture in Britain and its protagonists endeavor to find the perfect wave.

Project Description

White Waters is a photography project by Tomas Hein that looks into surfing in Great Britain.  It aims to explore and document an ever growing peripheral sub-culture and its protagonists as never before.

In White Waters a reality which is not present in the idealistic depiction of surf manifests itself through the rough conditions which are endured by surfers in search of the perfect British wave.

As well as exploring the periphery, White Waters will bring into perspective the notion of the city surfers: individuals who have moved from the periphery to the city of London and given up an essential part of their lifestyle.

Where can I see the progress of the project?

As the project moves on, I will be writting and posting the work in progress on my blog.  I have already started posting and there has been quite a bit of interest. I hope that you will not only get involved through funding, but also follow and participate through your comments on the blog.

What is the money for?

The minimum goal of £4000 is to work on shooting at different locations around Britain throughout this year.

Shooting a photography project for a book can be very expensive.  From film rolls to scanning and travelling expenses, to the final touches and book design.  I'll be shooting only film, using a Wista Field large format camera and a Mamiya RZ medium format camera.

In October 2012 I started White Waters using my own funding.  After 1334 miles and a long week of shooting in Thurso, Scotland, the project only started to take direction and doors began to open for further exploration.

Unfortunately winter came and I was unable to secure funding, this is why today I'm pitching the idea to you.

How will the money be used?

The next stage of the project, for which I'm now raising funding, is to do as much shooting as possible. In London and around the country.

All the money will be used to produce the project. From shooting, to editing and scanning, and finally editing a book.  The funds that I am hoping to get here are not for the printing of the book, but for the completion of the actual project and the book design.  The printing stage will only happen once I have finished shooting the project.

It is hard to say when a book is finished, but I estimate that by the summer of 2014 it will be at it's final stage.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

After the project is successfully funded it's time to plan each shoot very carefully. Fifty percent of the time spend on the project is generally research. It is very important to get the time of the year right, the weather conditions I'm looking for, the people I will be photographing and most importantly the locations. For all this to happen there is a lot of back office work: emails, phone calls, books, google, etc.

Large part of this has already been done in my previous trip to Scotland, where I met many people from around the country willing to collaborate.

Things can go wrong. What happens if I arrive to a place and the weather is too rough? The weather is never too rough, and I also look to shoot indoors as this is part of surfing in Britain. Weather is not always great.
But in case of hurricane you say? Well in that case you can be sure that only my travel expenses to the location will be lost as I'll have either returned home or flown away.
