Good news, bad news and good news and bad news and some photos
Rumors are abounding that the book is done and done. These rumors are not without some merit. Yes - 100 books were hastily assembled for a book release party at PS1 MOMA on March 24th. Toody was there, as was myself, Szim (the books designer) , Erin Yanke (the books editor) and Jay Martin (the books mad man archivist)
The 100 books made for this event were not the same as the ones you will be receiving though - in point of fact, this first "limited edition of 100" are vastly inferior to the final product you will be getting! These 100 copies were a test batch - and a test that fell a little short of our vision. The spines had strange shiny silver lettering instead of the white we intended, the inner sleeves were absolutely bizarrely misprinted in grids that make no sense, the paper was not matte and there were other small flaws.
As we paged through the book for the first time, we repressed our disappointment at flaws that, admittedly, only we would notice and instead just enjoyed the beauty of holding it in our hands. We could hear Fred's voice echoing through our heads saying, "Ay Yi Yi" and Toody was there to tell us, "Of course it fucked up - it's a Dead Moon and Mississippi Records release! When have we ever made anything that came out perfect?"
Yes, due to years of doing everything DIY, on the cheap and hard wiring things as we go - both Mississippi and Dead Moon have produced an extraordinary amount of flawed raw product. Lets call it "charming". And yes, in the interest of time being longer than rope, in the past we have just threw up our hands and excepted things as they roll. BUT - this book is a different beast. The first printing of 100 fell just short enough of our vision to demand a start from scratch redo.
Now the good news and the bad news portion of this.....
The good news is, Toody got to see the book for the first time (she purposely did not want to see or hear anything about it until it was released because she loves suprises) and she loved it! The people at the opening seemed to respond very positive to the book too. Other piece of good news is we all had a great time in New York.
One more piece of good news - we will be fixing the problems with the book for the next pressing, which is the version you will receive.
And now - the bad news. Since we are starting the pressing process over again, the books will be delayed by around two extra months! Yes, we will not have books in your hand until around the end of June. Ouch.
We appreciate that this is heartbreaking, as we are all chomping a the bit to get these. Money is tied up in it (I know that $70 - $140 is a hell of a lot of money for people like us to throw down and get nothing for a long period of time.) Mississippi can definitely refund anyone who does not want to wait the extra couple months - no harm, no foul.
We hope that in the scheme of things this will not be too horrible an inconvenience. We do apologize - but I firmly believe the extra two months is worth waiting for a book that is done as the authors envisioned, instead of a compromised version.
When we conceptualized the book, we did a thought experiment in which we imagined what it would be like if Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones or the Beatles existed only as underground bands. We imagined if there was no books on them and only one book were being made, what would that tomb look like? It would have to be grand and done right. To us, Dead Moon are BETTER than the Beatles, Dylan and the Stones - so the first book about them better be spot on. Go big or go home.
So - still some wait ahead. But it's like the song says -
How vaguely time remembers
How slowly we forget
We all pass through this wilderness
Never know where we'll be sent
Yep - chaos will always reign supreme and we will always soldier through it towards our Quixotic goals. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The book is coming in two months, instead of two weeks from now as we thought it would work out. Rest assured this book will come your way as it was intended.....30 miles of bad road be damned.
Kicked out and kicked in, Eric at Mississippi
....and now, some yin for your yang - photos from the book opening and exhibit of Dead Moon stuff at the MOMA.
