THE FILM

KONOYO is a Japanese style supernatural short film set in Scotland and Japan. The story follows Cobb, a university lecturer, who tries to return the bag of one his students after she leaves it behind in the classroom. While pursuing the girl through the university he finds himself drawn into to a mystery, the film is resolutely interior to Cobb’s experience. Is there a connection with this elusive Japanese girl? And will his journey reveal these secrets?

ORIGINS

The Japanese word KONOYO means “this life.” My film has evolved to become a personal story drawing on my experiences living in Japan. I was teaching English at a university Osaka for the last nine years. Even though I was safe in Osaka during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami disaster, the event affected the whole country. At the time a lot of people were traveling up to the affected areas to lend a hand. I choose not to go out fear of putting myself in harms way. At the time there were so many rumors about the news coming out of the area on safety, etc. Nonetheless, to this day that choice has made me feel guilty on some level. So, I have chosen to focus on guilt as one of the main themes of my story. We also hope this piece serves to keep the awareness on the fact that nearly 270,000 people are still homeless in the aftermath of the disaster that killed 19,000 and destroyed a million buildings.

PRODUCTION

The film will be shooting mid May in Edinburgh, Scotland. We will be shooting on a Red Scarlet Camera with an Arri Prime Lens Kit. This camera set up will allow us to capture our cinematic vision for the film. We have an enthusiastic team of students from Edinburgh College of Art/Screen Academy Scotland dedicated and able to bring the production of this film to a reality.

DAVID SIMPSON

David is originally from Labrador City, Canada and is currently studying his Masters Degree in Film Directing at the Edinburgh College of Art/University of Edinburgh. During the past several years David has been lecturing English in Japan at a foreign language university, experimenting with label design, and organizing events. 'Konoyo', currently in its pre-production phase, is his graduation film.

EREN FUKUSHIMA

EREN is an enthusiastic 8 year-old originally from Japan who has moved with her family to Edinburgh, Scotland. She says, that she is looking forward very much to playing the part of Aya.

YOUR MONEY

In order to make this film successfully, we need to have the sufficient funds. At the moment we already have a small sum of funds from Screen Academy Scotland. However, we still have to cover such cost as transportation, equipment, props, production design, and VFX/post production costs, and distribution. We still need your help to bring KONOYO to the screen. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Risks and challenges

There are many challenges and risks that could occur during the shooting of the film, mainly involving the location and set design, but thanks to our truly fantastic team of experienced Edinburgh College of Art/Screen Academy Scotland students we are ready to realize this project. In combination with my experience on previous projects, and having access to tutors and staff at the Edinburgh College of Art means we are equipped to handle the risks and challenges that may arise.
