About this project
Kefir is a traditional fermented beverage with numerous health benefits: but to get the best of it, it has to be fresh – and for this do-it-yourself preparation is the best. Those of you who already know kefir will probably agree that this is a very refreshing, tasty and also healthy beverage.
HOW WE GOT FROM KEFIR TO KEFIRKO
When a few people who have to keep their minds busy all the time - whether it is making music, design, branding, writing or preparing food - meet, you can be sure something new is bound to emerge. One day we came across kefir, liked its taste and noticed its beneficial effects. As we advocate the DIY principle, we started making kefir at home. Soon we realized that the procedure tends to be quite messy and complicated: jars, sieves, measuring cups, spoons, cloths, lids...milk, kefir grains...no metal, food-safe plastic...just enough of everything for another DIY intervention. This is why we started thinking about a solution that would minimize the number of utensils needed, keep our kitchens tidy, be handy and nice to look at. It took us some time, and since we do not like cheap, half-way solutions, but functional and sustainable products, we finally ended up with the KEFIRKO prototype.
We tested it and we believe that it can make the lives of kefir-makers a lot easier.
We firmly believe that you, too, will enjoy preparing and consuming your own kefir thanks to KEFIRKO.
KEFIRKO is designed so that every element has a functional purpose, and thus the preparation of kefir is made as simple as possible. Also, the materials used do not react with the contents so the kefir can preserve its unique taste and freshness.
MILK AND WATER KEFIR
Both milk and water kefir require kefir grains. For water kefir crystal grains are used, but the basic production principle remains the same.
DELICIOUS KEFIR DISHES
Either fresh or as an ingredient in smoothies, shakes, icecreams, breadspreads, salads, cakes, cookies, pies, puddings, pancakes… Your favourite meal can easily be even more delicious with kefir.
WHY MAKE KEFIR AT HOME
Making kefir by yourself gives you the opportunity to enjoy all the richness and health benefits of the beverage. Since no preservatives are added, you have better control over the quality of your kefir. Compared to the kefir you can buy in stores, the homemade beverage contains a much higher degree of kefir-specific active substances which are important for your health.
WHERE TO OBTAIN THE GRAINS
Kefir grains are constantly growing and multiplying, and it is common practice to share your extras with others. To help you with sharing we set up the KEFIRHOOD portal, based on the sharing is caring principle, where you can share your extras or obtain fresh grains. You can also share or obtain kefir grains through various social networks where people connect for this purpose.
HOW SENSITIVE ARE KEFIR GRAINS
Kefir grains are living organisms which – just like you – need food to live. But don’t worry. Even the more mobile among you can preserve the grains. During shorter or longer periods of absence, the grains can be stored in a cold place, which will slow down their activity.
While your kefir grains are having a rest, your KEFIRKO is waiting for new adventures. You may try growing your own sprouts or experiment and find other yet unknown ways to use it.
STRETCH GOAL #1
If we reach the stretch goal of $40,000, we will add a squeezer for free to each KEFIRKO pack. Now you will be able to squeeze fresh juice directly into your water kefir.
STRETCH GOAL #2
If we reach the stretch goal of $55,000, we will offer you a new reward: the KEFIRKO kit. You can use the large glasses to store your kefir in the refrigerator for secondary fermentation, and in the small one you can store your kefir grains. The glasses can be nested one into another, and finally in the KEFIRKO jar, like Russian dolls. You will also be getting a kitchen cloth.
Unscrew the lid just a tiny bit and the fruit flies will not be able to get inside the jar. V-shaped slots designed to keep the grains of all sizes in.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE KEFIRKO PRODUCTThe product is designed to allow further upgrades with low-priced accessories that will make the production of other healthy, homemade foods (fresh cheese and whey, butter, buttermilk, etc.) possible.
Let kefir-making become easy and fun with your own KEFIRKO. And remember, you can choose KEFIRKO in your preferred colour!

Risks and challenges
Designers' lives have become a lot more comfortable in the last few years with 3D CAD & 3D printing. We created several 3D printed versions that helped us to find right design solution for simple pouring and perfect handling.
We need to raise the funds to establish local production, buy some tools and equipment and place bulk orders for the materials.
Delay in receipt of these tools and equipment for local production might be a risk. The earliest rewards can be met with standard delivery of all the above.
Shipping options have already been checked out and most of the arrangements have been confirmed. We’re already building a strong customer support network for the Kickstarter campaign as well as later communication so we’re not leaving anything to chance.
