Who am I? My name is Kristi Meyer and I am the author of a new empowering book called The Adventures of Team Super Tubie. I am the mother of four incredible sons, including one who uses a feeding tube for his nutritional needs due to an autoimmune disease that affects his GI system.
What am I making? I have created a children’s book in which kids with a feeding tube are superheroes known as Super Tubies and use their feeding tubes to help save the day.
Were did the inspiration for the book come from?
The inspiration to write The Adventures of Team Super Tubie, came from my son, Camden. Diagnosed as a baby with Eosinophilic Esophagitis, which led to poor weight gain, Camden had a G-tube placed when he was two-and-a-half years old. The decision to place the tube was difficult, but necessary, and ultimately the best decision for his health and wellbeing.
Being thrust into the world of chronic disease and feeding tubes left our family anxious to find resources and support wherever possible. The feeding tube community was instrumental in this learning process.
I wanted to write this book to help other kids with feeding tubes, and other special needs, see themselves as the brave super heroes that they are, and to feel proud that the thing that makes them different, is also where they can find their greatest strength!
What is the schedule for this book/ kickstarter campaign? The book, including the beautiful illustrations by Kevin Cannon, is complete in its design. I am launching this campaign to help bring the book to print and share the adventure with the other amazing Super Tubie families around the world.
Text, illustrations, editing, and design are all complete. I will use the funds to assist with the proofing, printing, and distribution of the first 1000 print run of the book.
Why is this book important? I want all kids, and especially those with special medical needs, to identify with the characters in the book and feel empowered and special in their own lives.
The book depicts kids of different genders, different races, and with different types of feeding tubes.
They are all super heroes, all special, and all very brave!
Risks and challenges
The greatest challenge with this project is the distribution of the book once printed. My dream is that this book will find its way into the homes of all families who have a child who currently uses or previously has used a feeding tube for their nutritional needs. I hope this book helps these Super Tubies, feel empowered and proud. I will have to work hard to connect to the proper distribution channels that aren't easily accessible to self-published authors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
