Mobile Darkroom and Studio giving lectures, demonstrations and workshops on Art of Photography and documenting Americana.

!!!!!!!LAST 24 HOURS!!!!!!!

THE PHOTO PALACE

A mobile studio and darkroom - a showcase for the art of Film Photography.

Mission Statement:

To travel across the United States and beyond, documenting the people and landscape and educating public about Analog Photography in order to support Film as a form of Artistic Expression.

Main Goals:

1.     To provide hands on educational opportunities for children and adults alike all across the United States. An engaging Analog Photography curriculum will supplement these activities to create an enriching series of activities to help propagate analog photography.

2.     To chart the “New Americana” by creating a 10,000 negative photo narrative covering all aspects from “Fringe” to “Pop.”

3.     To display works created with various analog photography means along the route in both impromptu and scheduled events.

4.     To unite and spread awareness about analog photographers through a portable showroom and classroom.

Plan of Action:

·      $8000 have already been invested into the purchase and early parts of conversion of a 1978 35ft Gillig School bus.

·      Required is additional funding for plumbing, electric work and structural renovations. We already have all darkroom equipment that is needed.

·      All 48 Continental States will be visited at least once thereby reaching the widest possible audience of film-lovers.

·      Photos taken will be scanned and sent for free to those who provide an email address.

·      After initial funding the Photo Palace will be funded by art sales and through grant writing

1978 Gillig 35ft school bus is currently being converted into a traveling photographic educational and portrait facility. Your pledges will help with purchase and installation of: sink, tanks, batteries, counters, seating, walls, heating, cooling, etc. There is a plethora of smaller and larger items not listed there too so we are matching every dollar of this campaign 1:1 after it is successfully funded.

KICKSTARTER IS ALL OR NOTHING - P.L.E.A.S.E. PITCH IN ALL YOU CAN AND HELP OUT BY SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT THIS PROJECT.

This is what the money will be spent on (listing only the major thigs and undervaluing them probably):

• Bus itself (already paid for with credit) - $7.500

• Water Tanks (already paid for on credit) - $860.00

• Electrical to run the darkroom (generator, batteries, converter, etc...) - $2.500+

• VW buses for sleeping quarters for guests and the operators - $3.000+

• Wood for construction is interior - $3.000 +

• Darkroom sink (has to be custom manufactured to fit in) - $700+

• Plumbing, hardware, some specific finishing tools, etc. etc. etc.

We will match every dollar donated through here 1:1 with our own hard-earned cash and in the end will most likely end up spending very close to $30K. Please! Pitch in all you can. <3

THANK YOU!

About the Photographers:

Anton Orlov immigrated to the United States from Russia when he was just 17. Having always been passionate about photography he went to school at San Jose State where he received a Bachelors of Fine Arts with his colleague Ryan Kalem. When digital photography exploded, many old tenets of analog photography were forgotten, darkrooms soon seemed all but obsolete; however, both Anton and Ryan believe that the traditional photographic printing methods, allows the photographer a greater degree of interaction with their work.

Anton's photography is documentary in nature with majority of it being street or candid studio  portraiture. The use of Rolleiflex twin lens cameras allows him to take unobtrusive and more discreet photographs while still maintaining the highest degree of image quality. Creating his photographs via traditional manual means a deeper more intimate connection with each of his prints. Anton has is the co-founder of Photographers’ Guild at SJSU and has taught several courses on photography to various age groups. He has worked as a commercial photographer for the past decade and, from early 2011, has been teaching darkroom photography and offering darkroom space for rent in San Diego, CA.

Ryan Kalem is a specialist in large format photography. The use of the photo palace will allow his time sensitive art to thrive in a fashion only possible during full emersion. Because of the peculiarities of his work process Ryan needs to be exceptionally familiar with the content of the scene, a process that takes an immense amount of time and concentration. The use of the Photo Palace will catalyze this process in a wider range of environments enabling the creation of more diverse and engaging range of work.

Personal Appeal:

As an artist dedicated to traditional photographic print-making means I find the changes which swept over the industry since the late 1990s regrettable and devastating. Products which were staples of many great artists, and that were in continuous production for up to a century were lost to time. Appreciation for hand-made photography has dropped because there are fewer opportunities for people to get familiarized with the aesthetics of the that medium.

I hope to halt that trend by building The Photo Palace Bus and traveling the country in it. The interest in film photography among the younger generation has grown in recent years and the Bus could provide many artists their first chance at making a darkroom print. By presenting a customized combination of art shows, lectures and workshops to a wide range of audiences I hope to strengthen that renewed interest and help Analog Photography survive well into the 21st century.

The funding from Kickstarter will be tremendously helpful in ensuring that The Photo Palace Bus is built ergonomically and fully functional and in the fraction of the time that it would take without the funding. I already have over $8,000 invested in this project and am 100% committed to seeing this project through.

Your pledge of support would mean more than just the dollar amount - every pledge puts a little more wind under our wings as it shows that people believe in this project and are willing to stand up in support of FIlm Photography. However, as sad as it is to admit, one can not buy watertanks or batteries on inspiration, or I'd already have the Bus built bynow. So, please, pledge generously.

On behalf of Daguerre, Talbot, Jackson, Weegee, Adams and the rest of the darkroom gang  - Thank You!

Nepal Bus, Rolleiflex Tele Agfa APX100, Gelatin Silver print. A Orlov

Worker and Female - Japan, A Orlov

Curtis LeMay, 8x10 Gelatin Silver print from 4x5 negative - Ryan Kalem

Insence at Chichicastenango Market, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, A Orlov Edition 1 (Pledged For - Thank You!)

Self Portrait, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, Edition 1

Tortilla Makers, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, Edition 1

Two Women in Traditional Clothing, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, Edition 1

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, Edition 2

Rain, Guatemala Portfolio, Gelatin Silver mural print 32x32in, Edition 2

Please see the Entire Guatemala Portfolio and if you see a specific print you would like I can add that to the reward options for the same price of $475. Most prints are single edition Fair warning though - it is difficult to present a photo mural via a 72dpi screen shot. The richness of silver, the grain, paper texture and tone, the amazing amount of detail that is possible with a photochemical process - all those things get 'lost in translation' when viewed on a screen.

HELP US PLAN OUR ROUTE - these pledges assure You that we will be rolling by Your town or wherever you want us to go! How fun would that be to have us pull up to your town and teach a workshop or present a magic lantern slide show?!

And remember - if we don't hit the goal by Feb 1st - we get 0 of your pledges! So please help us spread the word about this wonderful project.

Thank you once again for your help.

Sincerely Yours,
Anton Orlov.

FAQ

  • I have been getting a few questions about the name 'The Photo Palace'.

The use of the the word Palace is not meant to evoke the feeling of extravagance or in any way an exclusive nature of the venture. It is rather meant as a 'Grand Residence' for the Art of Photography, a space where respect and creativity guide are the experience. I feel it is time that such a space be created and be made accessible to all photographic artists.

That said, as any beloved grand venture, this project has already picked up many nicknames and I am sure there are many more of them to come. We are more than happy to hear any suggestion that our generous donors and excited followers might come up with. Send them along and we'll consider all :)

In the end it's not about the name - it's about Art.

  • Some photo enthusiasts were commenting that while drawing the route in the closing sequence of the video I misses their city by a little bit and were wondering if we can make changes to stop by their communities.

The route drawn on the map is not the exact path that we will take - it was meant to demonstrate the fact that the bus will ideally visit as many places in the country as possible, guided by inspiration, discovery and community. As the First Major Journey we will make it to NYC and back to the West Coast. On the way we will be visiting the places requested in the Plan Our Route categories (can't wait to meet all of You!). We have already received a few requests from various photographic communities and educational establishments and it will be similar type of interest that will guide us in the future.

So, write to us, tell your local art community, follow us and soon we'll be in your town!

Hand made gelatin silver post card printed on vintage Kodak 1960's fiber paper. Captured and printed by Anton. These post cards are really cool - they are smaller than the cards today and really do look like something that was really mailed in the 60's. Today there are NO manufacturers of gelatin silver fiber paper that had standard mailing marking on the back. I found a small box of the paper in the darkroom that I once visited and therefore the availability of this reward is limiter to 50 pieces.

"Lake Atitlan" - Guatemala Portfolio, 32x32in. This is the only print in the series to be made in edition of two. After I developed the first final another identical one was somehow asking to be made. In the center of the image there are two men in hats rowing small canoes - when examined closely the amount of detail present there is a delight. Captured on Rolleiflex 2.8F Planar with Agfa APX100, printed on Foma Chamois Cream Tone fiber.

We may take some time getting there, but this will be our goal and shining beacon. PLUS this lucky and generous donor will receive 9 gelatin silver prints after a portrait session in The Photo Palace at the location chosen. LET US KNOW WHERE TO ROW! August 2012 is when we will be on the road if this project gets all it's funding and 1 year from then is the maximum time that will be allowed to get to the destination You chose - so we'll see you there by 8/2012

A portrait session of you alone or with your best buddies plus 5 16x20in gelatin silver prints made on location and even under your supervision, if you so desire. You will also be asked to select the film format - 35mm, 120 or large format. The session will be held either in the north-light studio or at some beautiful location (you can chose indoors or out and we'll select a location that will be close to the rout that we are taking and at the point where you want to intercept up). The delivery date listed is the earliest time we are certain the bus will be on the road (provided the success of this funding campaign) and so is the earliest you can schedule a portrait session. Please note that we can not drive to you specifically for this size of a pledge so you might have to come out to where The Photo Palace is, or wait for it to come near you - believe me, we will come close to wherever you are sooner or later.

An EXPERIENCE of a lifetime! Once completed The Photo Palace will offer the donors at this level the opportunity to join the adventure and be on board for one full week! (you may chose a shorter period if you wish, but I don't think you'll want to come off once you're in) During that time the Donor will be participating in all the events associated with The Photo Palace including workshops, lectures, demonstrations and portrait sessions. Special arrangements will be offered by which the donor will have a selection of natural or urban settings. For example if You are more into Nature we can arrange for an alternative photography workshop just for You to be taught in a beautiful natural setting. Another example would be if You are more into the urban setting during the time that You are on board The Photo Palace would switch to 100% portrait-taking, art-showing and general go-go-mode. You would be free to make any art while You are on board including documentaries about the journey. This would be an unforgettable and fun time plus we would be very grateful for any donations on this level as this is an all-or-nothing game. The delivery date listed here is the first month that I am certain that we will be in full operation and hence the first month that we can offer this reward (if we get on the road before that time You would be welcome on board as soon as You wish). You will be free to make the specific arrangements and schedule Your 1 week period via e-mail or by phone right after the end of a successful funding campaign.

TWICE THE EXPERIENCE of a lifetime! Everything in the $1750-one-week reward x2!!!!!! 2 weeks will really give you time to relax and absorb The Experience. I find that when going into a vastly different environment from my daily existence it takes me 3-4 days to 'get on the place's pace' and then I feel right at home so 2 weeks is usually the minimum I plan my trips for. Thank You x2. Or you can chose to have a companion to come with for a 1 week period.

For the TRUE COLLECTOR: "The City" - a photographic series of 365 gelatin silver prints ready for installation PLUS a personalized portrait session on board The Photo Palace as described in $1000 reward, PLUS the $775 monthly print program! Print size in 'The City" series ranges from 30x40in to 4x4in. A selection of approximately 120 images is available for preview at http://orlovphoto.com/galleries/the-city/ 351 of the images prints comprise an installation in checker-board format of 16x16in prints as one type of squares and 8x8+4x4 prints as others. The entire show of 365 prints and it's installation can be viewed at http://orlovphoto.com/videos/. Prints are all hand-made and captured on Agfa APX100 film and printed on Forte cold-tone fiber base paper - both extraordinarily high quality products have since been discontinued. Printing stage took me 33 all-night sessions (I print best at night when the owls are out and the city is quiet), matting and installation took another 6 days total. I see this portfolio is the preparation for the documentary series that will be created using The Photo Palace and is therefore a great collectible for when the book will eventually be published with that work. The photo session will be held after The Photo Palace is complete, which will be August 2012, but only if we get the full funding on this project - otherwise we get nothing at all.
