Space: The Infinite Opportunity
The National Space Society (NSS) wants to give you a truly inspiring and informative look at the future of space development. NSS is the leading grassroots space advocacy group in the U.S., and fights for both space exploration and commercial development of space. We believe in a bright future with humanity charging out into the solar system.
The resources in space are critical to humanity's future. Space offers us unlimited clean energy through space based solar power and effectively unlimited raw materials from the Moon & the asteroids. New metals, crystals, drugs and other materials can be made in the microgravity environment of space that can't be made on Earth. The knowledge and wealth generated from our expansion into space will trigger an economic and scientific renaissance. This will be the next great technological and industrial revolution.
Our Kickstarter Project will create a high quality video presentation that shows why space exploration and development are needed, how they will greatly benefit us all, and why the time to get involved is right now. This is not a history lesson. This is an inspiring view of the future.
We've gathered a truly stellar team of creative experts who have agreed to bring our video to life, but first we need your support to make it happen.
We invite you to look over the all-star team of professionals who have agreed to work with NSS on this project. They have the experience to create a great production; one that will entertain and inspire.
Jeffrey Marvin is an Oscar-nominated Producer who has created top quality IMAX films, including Cosmic Voyage. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and he has worked with major Hollywood figures including Harrison Ford and Morgan Freeman.
Nigel Ashcroft Ashcroft has a 30 year history in both film and television. His 2011 film "The Tree of Life" featuring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn won best picture last year at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2006 and 2007 Ashcroft directed the PBS high-definition astronomy special "Seeing in the Dark".
Riley hails from the United Kingdom and has worked on over 50 film projects and over 100 television programs in his career. His film "In the Shadow of the Moon" won an award at the Sundance Film Festival.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in recognition of his numerous works in communicating space-related topics to the public. Among his recent production work is a film about the final flight of NASA's Space Shuttle.
Timothy Ferris has kindly agreed to act as a story consultant. He's a Pulitzer Prize nominee that has won numerous awards for his scientific writing, and has also worked on several film projects.
There has been plenty of great science fiction written about space over the years, but we’ve seen relatively little about what our efforts in space will actually look like in the next five, ten, or even twenty years.
Does space matter? We think so. But we've found that even people who use space assets every day are often unaware of the vital those assets they play in their daily life. With this video, we will shed some light on why space matters, and give you something you’ll be proud to sponsor. We’ll give you a look at how space can offer solutions to some of our biggest challenges right here on Earth.
We’ll look at recent advances in space technology and where these efforts are likely to lead. We’ll show you some of the amazing scientific and economic opportunities that space will offer, and how your chance to participate may be closer than you think. With the help of space industry insiders, we’ll look to a future when we will have the infrastructure and experience to venture ever farther from Earth. And we’ll give you a video that is actually fun to watch!
When we reach our first hurdle of $35,000 we will produce a top quality video of at least 15 minutes in length. Additional funding will allow us to create additional videos on specific topics. If we reach our $500,000 stretch goal, we will have the resources to produce a full feature-length presentation which we can then use to reach an even broader audience.
We’re counting on you to help us make it happen, and in return, we’re offering you some really great and unique space-related rewards. However, the greatest reward that we want to give you, and everyone else who watches our videos, is an inspiring vision of our future. What is the National Space Society (NSS)
While NASA and the space community know about NSS, our organization may be new to you. We’re a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization devoted to educating the public about space and advocating for its exploration and development. We were formed back in 1987 by the merger of two organizations that date back to the 1970’s, the National Space Institute and the L-5 Society. Since the 1980’s we’ve been publishing our award winning Ad Astra Magazine and hosting the annual International Space Development Conference.
NSS has a leading role in the Space Exploration Alliance that sends a delegation to Congress each year to explain to our elected officials why space is so important. Many current and former leaders of NSS hold key positions in the space community. Some examples include Lori Garver, the current Deputy Administrator of NASA, and George Whitesides, formerly NASA Chief of Staff and now President of Virgin Galactic and The Spaceship Company. Its chapter network across the country and around the world is unparalleled in its reach. Today NSS is again taking the initiative by developing a professional-grade video designed to spread the passion we feel about space activities to a broader community.

Stretch Goals: What Happens if we Exceed Our Goal?
The more people who become Backers, the more content and resources we can provide for everyone. As we achieve higher Stretch Goals we can reach more people!
While we’ve intentionally kept our goal for this Kickstarter project at a modest $35,000, we hope to raise more than that. Additional funding will allow us to have a much greater impact on both the amount of material we can produce, and in our ability to get it in front of a larger audience.
Specifically, here is what we’ll do with additional funding:
- $45,000 – Teaser Versions for Viral Marketing
When we hit $45,000 we’ll be able to prepare additional shorter versions of our video from the original content. These versions will be very useful in many instances where the original video is simply too long for the occasion or a particular media. Having a short teaser version and a ‘movie trailer’ will help get our message across. We would distribute these shorter versions on the internet with links to the longer version.
- $55,000 – Get the Word to the Government
This is one of our favorite stretch goals! With a few exceptions, most Congressmen and their staffers are not very well informed about why space is so important. Being able to give them this video would provide them with a more memorable experience, and would be a tremendous advantage in helping us to make our case. When we hit $55,000 we’ll send DVDs of our video to President Obama, the Vice President, all members of the Cabinet, all members of Congress, and all State Governors. We’ll then follow up with them to see if they’ve actually watched it (yeah, we’re persistent like that).
- $75,000 – Two Supplemental Short Videos
When our campaign hits $75,000 we’ll add the first 2 installments of what will become a series of additional short videos. We expect these videos to be seven to ten minutes long.
The first video will be tentatively called “Moon 101”. This will be everything you always wanted to know about the Moon. How far away is the Moon, what are the conditions there, what resources does it have, should we build a base there - and if so, why? Yes, many of you already know this stuff, but most of the public doesn’t, and there will be enough material to keep even you lunar pros interested.
The second video will be “Space Spinoffs”, showing the amazing technology and products that have been developed as part of the space program. These spinoffs are now part of our daily lives. Our investments in NASA have already generated tremendous benefits. They enhance our lives and our economy on a daily basis, and we want to showcase a few of them.
- $100,000 – Bringing Space to the Next Generation
When we hit $100,000 we will focus targeted efforts on students. We’ll send out over 500 DVDs of all the content we develop to select schools around the U.S., reaching hundreds of thousands of students. While we’re at it, we’ll also sign these schools up for subscriptions to Ad Astra magazine. In addition, we’ll contact many more schools and provide them with information on how to access our videos digitally. We’re firm believers in reaching out to the next generation and giving them a look at the amazing future they can help to create.
- $150,000 – Even More Supplemental Videos!
When our campaign hits $150,000 we’ll be adding two more videos to our production schedule. The first will discuss the growing “Dangers of Space Debris”, and possible solutions. The second will take a deeper look at the concept of “Mining the Moon”. Water, oxygen, silicon, and many important metals are in abundance on the Moon. And we’ll show how these resources will be a necessary part of space development.
- $200,000 – Famous Narrator for Our Video
When we reach $200,000 we will have the pieces in place to have a well-known and talented celebrity narrate our video. Over the past 20 years NSS has made some pretty exciting connections with many people in TV and film, and with NASA itself. If you do your part by getting us to this funding level you will have demonstrated that there is serious support behind this project, and that it is something worthy of a celebrity narrator’s name and time.
Because the video will take several months to prepare, it is anticipated that all video-related content will be distributed by the end of May 2013, corresponding with the National Space Society’s annual International Space Development Conference. The full length movie may necessarily take a bit longer.
It is anticipated that all non-video-related items will be distributed before May 2013, subject to logistical considerations.

Risks and challenges
• Timing – Scheduling the initial (and hopefully stretch-goal follow-up) filming is hard to predict. Our goal of course is to be complete by the International Space Development Conference held every year in May. The KS funds will come through in late February – which means we’ve only got three months to complete the film(s) on time.
• Rewards Fulfillment – Many (most) Kickstarter campaigns stumble on fulfillment. Let’s face it, the kind of person that embarks on a KS effort is – by nature – an optimist. And this optimism extends (often wrongly) into picking the dates for fulfilling Backer Rewards. Because of this, we’ve intentionally added more time to our rewards fulfillment schedule than we actually think it will take.
• Availability of Product – Our campaign depends on a number of vendors – for jewelry, posters, bumper stickers, magazines and other items. We do not have control over the timing and sourcing of these products. As such, we have chosen who we believe to be reliable vendors and have confidence in their ability to deliver.
• Team – The initial film and the follow-on videos are all dependent on professional film people; authors, writers, narrators, videographers and other such professionals. There may be disagreements within these crews, financial incentives might be too low to be competitive and there may be scheduling conflicts. We have tried hard to mitigate these and develop agreements with these professionals prior to launching this campaign. We think we already have this sorted out – but you never know until you begin a project.
• Asteroid - A deep-space asteroid swings near the Earth and contaminates the planet with a virus. The virus creates a global zombie plague. If this happens, no funds will have changed hands because the people running the Amazon and Kickstarter servers will be in a perpetual search for braaaiiinnnsss. We will not be able to complete the films, because all the actors, digital production crew and in fact all audiences everywhere will be running for their lives.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
